London Word Massive drinks, Friday September 10th

Hannah's picture

Helloo!

Right, who's up for another drink?

EVERYONE WELCOME: whether you're a blog regular, a newbie or you just enjoy lurking. Come and say hi, it's a very friendly crowd and it's always a cracking night.

More details in the post below... with things to vote on...

See you then. Mine's a sparkling water.

Things to vote on:

WHERE... we've had the last two near Euston Station, and the one before that on Lamb's Conduit Street. Are you happy with going back to Euston? If not, could you suggest somewhere else? (looking for somewhere with a space to rent and no hire charge / extortionate bar minimum spend).

and, arguably more importantly...

WHAT... cake is your favourite?

so, WHO is coming? sign up below...

Hxx

*hoists flag*

I think I've managed to schedule that work requires me to be in London then, so I'll be there. Dressed as Sgt Bilko.

My favourite cake ? Pineapple Upside-down Cake, probably, but it's a long story for that. Or a Dundee Cake. I'm sure anything you bake will be marvelous.

Excellent!

Tweak that schedule! Fingers crossed we'll see you there...

*adds pennant*

Looking forward to my first Massive Meet-Up!

Although I am obviously TERRIFIED of using train ticket machines after the enormous amount of publicity the BBC has given this today. (See the alarming quotes from the BBC News website *below*)

Passenger Focus chief executive Anthony Smith said ticket machines were particularly daunting for passengers catching a train for the first time, or those "buying a different type of ticket from their normal ones".
"However, many passengers who buy a particular ticket often, or use a familiar ticket machine, may have less trouble."

Hopefully, I will overcome my fear in time to purchase a ticket and join you all.

Favourite cake? Anything with cake in it.
Suggested location? Anywhere with beer in it.

drakeygirl | 21 July 2010 - 8:43pm

MARVELLOUS!

Really looking forward to meeting you in the real world. Splendid.

0
Hannah | 21 July 2010 - 9:35pm

Hooray!

Doesn't clash with Glastonbury.

0
Dr.Pill | 21 July 2010 - 9:11pm

Haha!

Yeahhhh, that was unfortunate timing.... ooops...

0
Hannah | 21 July 2010 - 9:28pm

End of the Road Festival

Sorry, love to meet you all there but I'd rather see Wilco.

0
Neil Dyson | 11 August 2010 - 9:11am

A cautious "in" from me to Hannah.

Perhaps I'll attempt some apple cake. I'm not that great a baker in any way, but I feel the urge to get a bit more creative with my offerings...

0
ganglesprocket | 21 July 2010 - 9:33pm

I'll be there

Will at least arrive sober this time. Fine with Euston - anywhere near Waterloo even better of course.

Carrot cake is my fav. Preferably the one from the Ottolenghi cook book.

0
Leedsboy | 21 July 2010 - 9:53pm

Assuming that I’m still...

...in gainful employment, I’m taking the 10th September off work so that I can wander around London beforehand.

The Prince Arthur has enough space to fit all of us in and the bar staff are friendly and tolerant. I can’t speak for the quality and range of beers on offer, however on previous visits the orange juice has been served with a black drinking straw, lending it an air of sophistication that you don't get from a pint. Plus the short walk from Euston station along that parade of niche interest shops is always uplifting. I’m considering adopting a transvestite lifestyle so that I can visit Transformation. I’m told that I have the eyelashes for it but that everything else is a disaster.

That said, if the majority want to relocate then I’m easy. I’ll go anywhere.

backwards7 | 21 July 2010 - 10:02pm

I shall be there.

We were looking at diaries tonight. Mrs L confirmed and stamped my Pink Ticket and also told me that I'm staying up in The Smoke for the night because she a) doesn't want to suffer a horribly drunk me staggering in at lord only knows what hour and b) she doesn't want me grumping and groaning about the place all the next morning.

I'm all excited.

0
Lenny Law | 21 July 2010 - 10:12pm

Blimey!

Nice one. You've been threatening to come to drinks for ages... glad it looks like you'll be able to make this one!

0
Hannah | 24 July 2010 - 7:07pm

I'm now deciding what to wear.

Which colour lining to the cape, the silver- or gold-topped cane, what brand of moustache-wax and the like. My spats are being reglazed specially. And my new top hat will, of course, be worn.

It's that or the suit of armour.

2
Lenny Law | 24 July 2010 - 10:03pm

Hoping to be there

although we do tend to have our hols around then and it's Mrs Phil's birthday that week so I may need to prioritise Friday evening at home.

Cake: anything involving chocolate

Venue: No problem with Euston but quite fancied the sound of the Lamb laying down in Conduit Street

0
Phil Pirrip | 22 July 2010 - 9:56am

Me too

Quite likely at this point for me. The Euston venue was fine, but anywhere in central London would be ok for me too.
Thanks again for organising Hannah.

0
Martin Simmonds | 22 July 2010 - 10:51am

Yep

Definitely in, Hannah. Thanks again for being the Grand High Organisatrix of the Massive.

I think the Prince Arthur is a goodie and has served us well the last couple of times. Let's not monkey about with a fruitful status quo, especially not a status quo that has previously produced sightings of a man with a mirrored head, and Luke Haines.

And, as backwards7 so rightly points out, if any of the Massive find themselves in need of a little light (OK, probably not light) pornography or an expansion of their BDSM wardrobe, Euston is quite the quartier. SO classy.

0
Bob | 22 July 2010 - 11:12am

I'm in

If you want a change of venue, how about here:

http://www.fancyapint.com/pubs/pub2216.php

Very nice, but may be hard to reserve spaces. But v roomy.

0
Five-Centres | 22 July 2010 - 11:31am

I'll be there

I think I like the Lamb better, but I don't have any problem with the Prince Arthur.

Chocolate cake is my favourite.

A bientot.

0
Carl Parker | 22 July 2010 - 11:37am

Hoping to be there.

All looks fine at the moment. I think I'll leave details of my favourite cake out as it's been the reason why I have to check my posts on a saturday morning to see if I've 'done it again' and posted some complete b******s while under the influence!
Looking forward to seeing you all.

0
Lunaman | 22 July 2010 - 12:16pm

I'm in too

I had to cry off the last one owing to a mysterious 24 hour bug, but fully intend to partake of the breaking of the cake this time.

0
Rosbif | 22 July 2010 - 12:31pm

Splendid

Just try not to get sick this time ;-)

0
Hannah | 25 July 2010 - 10:46pm

I'm there

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting new faces. I'll also echo drakeygirl's comment of cake-flavoured cake and beer-flavoured beer.

Euston is fine for me, but again I can make anywhere in Central London.

Thanks for organising, Hannah!

0
Joe R | 23 July 2010 - 11:16am

Definitely count me in this time

Will book the day off. Anyone know a reasonable hotel in the Euston area?
Favourite cake? Anything with butter icing or marzipan.

Talking of cakes my daughter left junior school yesterday. She was in a class of 14 and one of the other parents baked a celebratory cake that had miniature figures of each child with a name plate and the correct hair colouring plus the teacher and the classroom - unbelievable creation. No wonder us guys are considered surplus to requirements!!

0
Steve Turner | 23 July 2010 - 11:33am

Hotel

Last time I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, Coram St, Bloomsbury. It was fine.

0
el hombre malo | 23 July 2010 - 12:29pm

You can have my slice of cake

I'm at Gorillaz that night!

0
el toro calvo grande | 23 July 2010 - 12:58pm

Gorillaz

now rescheduled.......mmmmmmm.....I wonder?

0
el toro calvo grande | 29 July 2010 - 12:58pm

Oh Bollocks

What was I thinking? FPO's birthday that day....so that will be a no then...

0
el toro calvo grande | 29 July 2010 - 1:12pm

Love to be there this time.

I missed the last two due to circs beyond my c.

Euston? I have no problem.

Favourite cake? The biggest one.

1
Beezer | 24 July 2010 - 7:50pm

Oh f*ck!

I really wanted to do this one!
My long lost auntie is visiting from the USA that very fricking weekend.
Holy sh*tting bollocks!

(Can you sense my disappointment?)

Next time? I hope so.
Enjoy.

(Although, I hasten to add, that I'm very excited about seeing the long lost colonials... God bless 'em.)

0
Adman | 28 July 2010 - 11:50pm

Awwwww, shame!

But there'll probably be another one in December or January, so hopefully see you then...

0
Hannah | 29 July 2010 - 9:37am

That would be

excellent Hannah.
Let me repeat my good wishes to all for 10/9. :)

Mine's large glass of red!

0
Adman | 29 July 2010 - 10:13am

I'd love to come!

What's the form? Do you all wear badges with your pseudonyms on them for ID purposes? Is there a "special dance"? Is it distressingly cliquey? My favourite kind of cake is free cake.

0
piglu | 29 July 2010 - 12:41am

Extremely cliquey

When you arrive (after a thorough identification check and full-body search, obviously), everyone is divided up into groups depending on how many Massive Meet-ups they have previously attended.

When "the segregation" has taken place, Word staff members walk round with clipboards asking themed pop music questions (last time is was bass players with The Fall) at regular intervals. Get one of these wrong, and you are loudly jeered by all in attendance, given a copy of the new Jedward album, and forcibly ejected from the pub.

If you last ten rounds of questioning, you are then allowed to clean the boots of "The Massive Elite" - those hardy souls who have attended every gathering thus far and can name the cowbell player on (Don't) Fear the Reaper.

---------------------------------

Either that or it's extremely friendly, everyone buys each other drinks, we all eat Hannah's yummy cake, have a natter about everything and nothing, and everyone goes home feeling they've made new friends.

Do come, I'm sure I speak for everyone who's been to a pub gathering before when I say we'd be delighted to have you

3
Joe R | 29 July 2010 - 7:52am

It's very easy

The only danger for first-timers in that pub is that you plonk yourself down among a group of scruffy, earnest misfits and say "Hi, I'm Captain Underpants" and they say "...and we're the National Union of Railway Workers' Strike Committee"

3
Captain Underpants | 29 July 2010 - 8:59am

Ha

I did actually come to that gig above that pub opposite that Word office the other month. At one point a boggle-eyed Mark Ellen walked past exclaiming, "I've just met Captain Underpants!!" Or have I misremembered this?

0
piglu | 29 July 2010 - 11:28am

Hopefully

will make this one as I have been absent without leave from the Forum, not least the Word gig and probably the last two booze-ups, shame on me!

I really should lay off the cakes.

0
Retro Man | 29 July 2010 - 8:56am

Hooray!

Only this morning I was wondering where you'd gone. On my to-do list for the day was to send you an email and check on your general wellbeing. It'll be good to see you :)

0
Joe R | 29 July 2010 - 11:21am

I'm honoured Joe...

you and the good Captain remembered me haha...nothing like that warm glow of the Word Massive to cheer one up eh?

0
Retro Man | 29 July 2010 - 11:35am

P.S.

Has there been a smiley amnesty in my absence then?

0
Retro Man | 29 July 2010 - 11:36am

No.

We're living dangerously.
:-)

;)
))))))))

- Welcome back.

Lunaman | 30 July 2010 - 8:40am

retro!

Excellent! Looking forward to it. My new job requires me to work most Saturdays but I managed to get 11th off as I earnestly told my employer that it's when I anually get together with my Saudi friends for' a bit of a giggle.' I've forgotten the name of my favourite cake, but I remember that the recipe's author was one Alice B Toklas

0
Vorgongod | 29 July 2010 - 11:54am

Hey Vorgongod...!

Blimey, I should disappear and then come back more often...! I'm welling up here...

0
Retro Man | 29 July 2010 - 1:20pm

Vorgongod | 30 July 2010 - 6:19am

I'm in

bringing the boys over for a weekend in London. Massive meet on Friday night, Arsenal v Bolton on Saturday (if we can get tickets), and all things in between.

Wasn't there a London breakfast thread on here a while ago? I know, I'm thinking breakfasts, doubt the boys are.

See you there (Vorgongod - the boys are native Norwegian, you might get the definitive Norwegian Wood if you play your cards right)

0
Sid Williams | 6 August 2010 - 10:11pm

just noticed

cant seem to see that a venue has been agreed on. Can I assume it will be in the Euston vicinity before I book a hotel?

0
Sid Williams | 7 August 2010 - 3:14pm

Euston it is

It's the Prince Arthur in Eversholt Street, 2 minutes from the station.

0
Carl Parker | 7 August 2010 - 3:45pm

Fantastic!

Did I miss what time the festivities are likely to begin?

0
minty | 9 August 2010 - 8:53pm

If you get there for 6

the early arrivals should be there.
On the two previous times we've used this venue the management have reserved the left hand side for us, as you walk through the door.

0
Carl Parker | 10 August 2010 - 12:47pm

Apologies for the delay

I've been tied up with some grim business - but yes, up for another one Hannah

0
Mondo | 10 August 2010 - 1:03pm

sorry to hear it, mondo

Hope things are better now. See you in September.

0
Hannah | 11 August 2010 - 8:56am

Fingers crossed

Might be able to make it. Euston would be very handy.
Now, cake?
If pub has any white beers, then lemon drizzle cake.
Otherwise, dark ales will require a rich fruit cake, probably.
If it's sickly iced 'cup' cakes I'll just have to drink gin.
Cheerio for now!

PS do I need change for the Jukebox?

0
Whytey | 10 August 2010 - 1:11pm

I'll be there

Heat, trains and laziness made me miss the last one. I shall be there for the off this time.

0
Twangothan | 10 August 2010 - 1:22pm

quick hello from my hols

Brilliant, glad you're all up for it. Euston it is.

0
Hannah | 10 August 2010 - 11:06pm

Greetings from the N.W.Massive.

On behalf of the great unwashed.Hope you all have a truly wonderful night.

1
Pencilsqueezer | 11 August 2010 - 7:13am

Really want to make one of these..

Will try and find a way to fit this into my schedule of frantic inactivity (unless it's a good tide that night and the mullet are in sore need of a bothering and putting-back).

0
DLM | 11 August 2010 - 7:32am

Just to be clear on the ettiquette..

Are we supposed to bring a cake, or is that Hannah's job and if any of us dare to intrude upon her baking territory we will cause grave offence and be banned from future meet-ups?

0
Lenny Law | 11 August 2010 - 11:24am

Please feel free

to bring any cake you like.
Or a black pudding, which might make you a friend of Fraser's for life.
Or not.

0
Carl Parker | 11 August 2010 - 11:57am

*makes notes, taps clipboard*

I'm keeping a close eye on you, Law. Mark my words.

but seriously, the more cake, the better. Specsbeard brought cheese and crackers to the last one, that was very welcome.
