'London Rock'
Posted by stimpy on 14 September 2011 - 12:37am.
Just been watching a curious film called 'London Rock'. It appears to have been made by an American director in about 1970 to provide an American audience with a overview of what was going on in London.
Lots of 'talking head' footage of Notting Hill scenesters (Jeff Dexter, Tony Eillott, etc) as well as plenty of footage of Marc Bolan, Faces, Linda Lewis and RT-era Fairport playing in the garden at Little Hadham.
I've never heard of the film before but I'd definitely suggest checking it out - it captures the early-70s vibe perfectly. There seem to be bits on Youtube but I couldn't find the entire movie. Here's the Fairport segment.

I'd kill a duck..
..to get that whole film.
It was
on Youtube in it's entirety quite recently.
The Marc Bolan footage is priceless.
Sky Arts
show it regularly (seemingly once a month, usually around 2AM).
9.30am this morning
I think.
Then 5:30 this evening
Looks terrific
Sadly I don't have Sky or any intention of getting it, but hopefully it will show up on Freeview. I don't suppose there's any way of it finding it's way onto a DVD is there? No?
Oh. As you were.
Not sure I know how to get it off my Sky+ box
Sorry :-(
My brother...
...burned it onto disc from Sky about a year ago to give to me. I was surprised - I'd never heard of it - in fact, I doubt if anyone had prior to Sky obviously buying the rights (probably in some job lot from a defunct studio)!
Thing is, while I can play his disc I can't copy it on my DVD hard drive thingy, as I could if I'd recorded it myself. But then I don't believe I can get Sky myself, in order to record it for others...
Perhaps someone else could record it (on one of its many Sky airings) and send a DVD to Twang and Shane?
Wasn't aware they had
a period without a female singer.
"a period without a female singer"
...that's an oxymoron, Fademeister. Think about it (and then don't!)
I'd love to see the whole film...
as the Fairport clip was fabulous. I remember David Hepworth posting the footage of The Faces some time back and that was pretty extraordinary too. It's all very well seeing archive material of bands playing gigs, but what is really special is seeing them in their everyday surroundings with all the cultural signifiers of the times. Someone start the campaign to get this an official release on DVD!
Point of Order
It was me not David.
I've got the whole film
if anyone would like it, let me know I'll burn it to disc. It's 'borrowed' from Sky Arts
