London Mingle - Friday 6th January!

Hannah's picture

Hello chaps!

It's that time again: for drinking alcohol, eating cake* and talking about music & nonsense. We'd love you to join us for the next London Mingle on Friday 6th Jan.

Newbies warmly welcomed, always lovely to meet new people. Drop me a line if you're thinking about coming for the first time!

Venue details and sign-up sheet in the comments.

Mine's usually a sparkling water. Suspect I'll need a double vodka or two at this one.

Badgers!

As usual, we’ll be in the private upstairs room at the King and Queen, 1 Foley Street, W1W 6DL. Go to the back of the bar, through the door, up the stairs and you’ll find us. People generally start arriving from 6pm onwards, tends to get rather busy from 7pm onwards.

The pub is less than a mile from Euston Station (the very nearest tubes - 3 minutes walk away - are Goodge Street on the Northern, Warren Street on the Northern and Victoria. Oxford Circus and Great Portland Street tubes are less than 10 minutes walk)
Should be plenty of on-road parking in the surrounding streets (you might have to pay for meter parking for a while, depending on what time you arrive, but Congestion Charging stops at 6pm.)

Please remember to bring some loose change – the pub don’t charge for room hire; all they ask is that we do a whip-round in support of Macmillan cancer support.

Home-cooked treats*, CD giveaways, book swaps all happening as usual. Can’t remember what the CD theme is, can someone please post it?

Have utterly lost track of who can make this one and who can’t (bit scatty at the moment with the impending house move). But it’s always a lovely crowd regardless. Please sign up below so I know who’s coming...

hope to see you there

* For the first time, I don’t think I’ll be able to bring a cake to this mingle. I feel tremendously sad about this. But, I’m moving house three days later, the movers will be in all day on the 6th itself packing us up, and I’ve already put away all my bakeware and equipment. Hey, I think I’ll have even packed my uke by then. To be honest, I’ll probably be asleep under a table by 8pm. Normal service will be resumed in March... (Friday March 2nd to be specific)

Hannah | 29 December 2011 - 3:35pm

You'll certainly

be fast on under a table if you have a couple of double Vodka's. Let me be the first to buy you one.

0
el toro calvo grande | 29 December 2011 - 4:09pm

Hello!

Does that mean you can definitely come to this one? Brilliant, be so lovely to see you! I'll do my best to stay awake! x

0
Hannah | 29 December 2011 - 4:16pm

See below

Got the pink pass from Mrs toro, subject to her not feeling unwell or getting the call up for her op.

0
el toro calvo grande | 29 December 2011 - 4:19pm

re March 2nd

what was the CD theme again?

0
Sid Williams | 20 February 2012 - 11:39am

Just what I was wondering

I have an entirely themeless one compiled and ready to burn when I get some more discs. Just need a title and a suitable cover image.

0
Mike_H | 22 February 2012 - 12:24am

Wasn't it Time?

That's what I've got lodged in my brain, and probably what I'll do anyway. Best get a moce on in fact, time is marching on...

0
Rosbif | 22 February 2012 - 10:16am

Time was the Liverpool mingle, la

Don't know about this one

0
DogFacedBoy | 22 February 2012 - 10:53am

It's a date

Final opportunity for extravagance before chubby checker begins again in earnest on Monday 9th!

0
Martin Simmonds | 29 December 2011 - 3:44pm

Very possibly

It has just transpired that I will be meeting up with a friend I haven't seen in around 18 years on that very night BUT it is in the Goodge St area so I may be there later on as she will be travelling back up north that evening.
At the very least I will endeavour to leave a bag of goodies for those that do make it.

0
jimmyshoes01 | 29 December 2011 - 3:46pm

Hooray!

Count me in, I've been meaning to ask if the 6th was the date of the next one. Looking forward to seeing everyone

0
Joe R | 29 December 2011 - 3:48pm

Still hoping

to make it.

Seem to be rapidly running out of time to make a themed CD. However, I will bring some music to throw onto the table:

1. The original CD where I've subsequently upgraded to an improved/classic/deluxe edition - definitely a couple of Calexico there at least.

2. One of the unfortunate side effects of Mrs toro's condition is that she is getting a bit forgetful. As a result, she managed to order 2 copies of a lot of the music she gave me for Christmas. Given that she ordered them from a wide variety of sources via Amazon, and cant be buggered to work out where to send them all back, I'll bring them to the mingle. Cant remember what's there off the top of my head - principally latin based world music type stuff I think.

Also got some books to bring as well (including some of Mrs toro's overorders in that department as well.

While I'm at it, is there anyone else staying over in that there London on the Friday night (apart from the locals that is)? If so, some guidance on hotels would be gratefully received. Not looking for the Ritz, but dont want to get bitten to death by bedbugs either.

0
el toro calvo grande | 29 December 2011 - 4:17pm

I'm coming!

Not sure yet if Mr Drakeygirl will be or not (depending on complicated work/babysitting/financial factors).
But I am definitely going to be there.
I'm doing a CD on the theme of 'Firsts'. At least, that's the plan, anyway.
Be good to see some old faces, and hopefully some new, too.

0
drakeygirl | 29 December 2011 - 4:32pm

Is this the CD theme ...

... or just you branching out on your own ;-)

Firsts. OK! I'm aiming to be there, I'll start working on a CD as well.

0
Topjukes | 29 December 2011 - 6:36pm

Nobody came up with a theme

So I made my own up! Please be the second for firsts...

0
drakeygirl | 29 December 2011 - 6:50pm

I'll be there

Trying to track down a Stax "Fingersnap" t-shirt for the occasion

0
YTDS | 29 December 2011 - 4:52pm

Get in any bootleg Cd n DVD requests

have some stuff left over from the Reading Mingle. Don't ask, don't get and all that. Throw summat at me and I'll try and find it

0
DogFacedBoy | 29 December 2011 - 5:14pm

I'm there!

(Sorry about that.)

0
Bob | 29 December 2011 - 5:00pm

No apology necessary

*starts campaign to bring back down arrows*

1
Joe R | 29 December 2011 - 5:25pm

Here's a shiny farthing...

...and a clip round the ear for your cheek, young shaver m'lad.

0
Bob | 29 December 2011 - 5:31pm

We'll be there...

...I speak of:

1. Myself
2. Carol From Luton
3. the hitherto little-known Sheryl From Luton

We're hoping the man.of.soup.meister will also be there...

Regardless of theme, in my very limited airplane baggage allowance I'll be bringing a small quantity of goodies (or not) including copies of the sought-after CD 'Dave Amitri Presents: The Mahavishnu Orchestra Bootleg Essentials'.

4
Colin H | 29 December 2011 - 5:56pm

Aha! No onsite work that week

so, providing the GLW doesn't object, I should see you all there.

0
davebigpicture | 29 December 2011 - 6:05pm

I'm there

Doesn't look like I will have anything to hold me back. Missed the last London one so this feels well overdue. Already working on a compilation, should have a decent stack to bring.

See you there.

0
VincePacket | 29 December 2011 - 6:30pm

Yah mo

B there.

0
Stick | 29 December 2011 - 6:59pm

Me too

Can I suggest, for anyone who hasn't started a CD yet, that we do favourites from 2011?

I'd also suggest that it's not necessarily limited to new music released in 2011, but any new discoveries you may have made of old stuff. But decide for yourself how it should play.

0
Carl Parker | 29 December 2011 - 7:09pm

There is no chance...

...of a CD from me. Sorry. I plan to make up for it with comestibles.

0
Bob | 29 December 2011 - 7:17pm

After

the disappointing response to my cheesecake last time, I'll be loaded with CDs only.

0
Carl Parker | 29 December 2011 - 11:38pm

Not from me old boy

It was utterly delicious!

I shall be there, though whether I get it together to do a comp remains to be seen.

0
Twangothan | 30 December 2011 - 10:29am

Only disappointment

with the cheesecake was the lack of forks, plates etc. to eat it with. The cheesecake itself was a stunner. I got my hands messy with at least two helpings.

1
Mike_H | 3 January 2012 - 2:13pm

I'm a be there too

I shall be there. Will probably get a CD together, which like my last one will contain a couple of token attempts to reference the theme.

0
Rosbif | 29 December 2011 - 8:11pm

Perhaps needless to say, Bob

I'd be *extremely* interested in your homemade pork scratchings / crackling bits. Thanks in advance.

0
Stick | 29 December 2011 - 8:13pm

Right then.

When I get home I'll go and see the butcher man and get a few sheets of skin.

I want to make something that requires the use of my new Kenwood too. Answers on a postcard. (Actually there's a non-negligible chance of home-made sausages, depending on how they work out.)

1
Bob | 29 December 2011 - 9:31pm

Hope to be there

However after two whole weeks away from the accursed work, the bastards will have left a pile of crap to sort out during the first few days back. This may entail some international jet-setting to the likes of Nottingham, Exeter or even Norwich.

I shall await my fate.

I'd love to make it though. I can bring books but probably no cd's.

I may also still be sporting my holiday beard. Grown for no other reason than I haven't shaved since the TVM Mingle. I like it for these reasons:

1. It gives my normally pudgy potato face a bit of shape.
2. You can't see the first 3 chins.

I think it makes me look like 'Faith'-era George Michael. The sister-in-law begs to differ; her choices now range across Demis Roussoss, Brian Blessed and Brian Redhead. Unaccountably she's now gone to bed with a dead leg.

2
Beezer | 30 December 2011 - 12:21am

Christmas beard here too

Last shaved on 23rd so exactly a weeks growth getting nicely ragged now. Scared the pants off myself yesterday when I got in the lift at work to see some dour looking scruffy, bearded bloke, big woollen jacket with the hood pulled up staring back at me dead-eyed. Bloody mirrors.....

Grew one once a few years ago to see what it looked like....the answer was Abe Lincoln - plenty of chin coverage but cheeks needed some more growth. This one is going the same way, only with more grey/ginger bits. In fact, mainly grey/ginger bits.

Will be long gone by 6th so chins will be prominently displayed, including the fine new one that appears to have arrived over Christmas.

0
el toro calvo grande | 30 December 2011 - 9:56am

An early departure

and a no-show for the last two means this one has not only been pencilled onto the new calendar but inked in with parcel quality marker pen.

Might possibly bring food ... maybe.

0
Phil Pirrip | 29 December 2011 - 11:03pm

I shall have

Great Expectations, Pip.

3
drakeygirl | 29 December 2011 - 11:11pm

Never nas a pseudonym

come to haunt quite as at present. One dares to suggest grate expectations instead.

0
Phil Pirrip | 29 December 2011 - 11:17pm

Sadly I will be in Germany...

... to attend my nephew's Christening (selfish little git).

I have missed two in a row. I will not miss a third...

0
ganglesprocket | 29 December 2011 - 11:50pm

Just in case I haven't mentioned it before...

...Carol From Luton loses all sensibility in the presence of a fine lemon drizzle cake.

(Sheryl From Luton is - as Twang will corroborate - a caravanning enthusiast... but we wouldn't for a moment expect anyone to bring along any caravans.)

0
Colin H | 30 December 2011 - 12:02am

Right, that does it.

I will make a lemon drizzle cake. It's one of my favourite cakes to make. I can do this. Making cakes is more fun than moving house. There will be lemon cake.

2
Hannah | 30 December 2011 - 12:05am

*winces with guilt*...

...I don't know what to say, Hannah: I'm torn! Part of me is riven with guilt and yearning to say, 'Nooooooooooooooo, Hannah - you're moving house, you're coping with massive stress and here's me giving you Massive stress...'

But then another part of me is thinking, 'Hmmmm? Hannah's famous cake-makery - this is a once in a lifetime opportunity - don't blow it with magnanimity...'

And still yet a third part of me is thinking, 'If Carol From Luton ever finds out that I wilfully STOPPED That Legendary BakeMeister Hannah From London making her a lemon drizzle cake... well, it could be a nasty scene all round...'

*paces floor, mired in indecision*

0
Colin H | 30 December 2011 - 12:11am

There will be lemon drizzle cake!

And it will be my pleasure.

2
Hannah | 2 January 2012 - 9:45pm

Hurrah!

...never did I think it would be so delightful to hear someone talking drizzle!

(rewards in Heaven etc etc...)

0
Colin H | 2 January 2012 - 9:57pm

I'm in.

I might do a bit of cooking..

0
Lenny Law | 30 December 2011 - 12:04am

Yay!

I'm in - looking forward to it.

Will definitely try to do a CD for this one but the theme for it might be, er, 'Songs on this CD'...

0
Specs_Beard | 30 December 2011 - 12:36am

See you there

I'll have CDs, my favourite songs of 2011.
Looking forward to it! Thanks for organising us Hannah.

0
katyg | 30 December 2011 - 1:40pm

Hopefully

I should be able to make it. Not sure about CDs though, will have to think about what I can come up with.

0
Malc | 30 December 2011 - 8:12pm

Hooray!

Delighted so many of you lovely chaps and chapesses can make it. see you there...

0
Hannah | 2 January 2012 - 12:11am

I can't make it.

Our twins are having their 4th birthday party that afternoon and whilst it finishes at 6pm, disappearing soon after to get to London will take the gloss off the day.

I was really looking forward to the mingle - but this is evidence that I am a classic bloke in that I have to be within 7 days of a diary clash to actually notice it.

Have fun.

0
Leedsboy | 2 January 2012 - 12:18am

Damn

I was driving this time specifically to give you a lift home. Ah well, your turn next time :-)

1
VincePacket | 2 January 2012 - 2:48pm

Hey Lenny

Vince is weighing in with the porkie pies now. No need to bake.

0
Leedsboy | 2 January 2012 - 3:47pm

Quite understood.

Hopefully see you in March. Hope you have a lovely birthday party! xx

0
Hannah | 2 January 2012 - 9:33pm

Mingle - Denied!

Unfortunately (for me, if not for the rest of you) I won't be at the Mingle on the 6th.

I shan't be in London that day I'm afraid.

Curses! Foiled again! *twirls moustache*

Have fun. I can send a photo of me to your mobiles if that helps?

No? Right.

0
Beezer | 3 January 2012 - 11:37am

I no longer love you Beezer

*sad face*

I still love you really, Beezer

1
Hannah | 3 January 2012 - 3:32pm

Hold that thought

If all goes to plan re. Chubby Checking there should be even less of me to love at future Mingles.

Which would be a good thing? Yes. I think.

0
Beezer | 4 January 2012 - 10:25am

I'm coming

I've missed two in a row, so plan to be at this one.

Warning: I've made CDs.

0
Five-Centres | 3 January 2012 - 12:33pm

Have I already mentioned...

... that 6th January is my 50th Birthday? I have? Oh.

One of these days I cetainly hope to get along to a mingle, and maybe have a small dry sherry or two.

In the meantime, have a good one at the King and Queen on Friday.

0
duco01 | 3 January 2012 - 1:15pm

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I will raise a glass of something in your honour. Have a great day and hopefully see you in March.

0
Hannah | 3 January 2012 - 3:33pm

Day off

duly achieved. I will try to make it there (and, more to the point, back) without adult supervision.

indiejules84 may accompany me, but I haven't yet checked - those of you crazy kidz on Twitter could ask her for me(?)

Not sure if I have time to make a CD (I may need adult supervision for that too). One day I promise to bring more than just myself and a raging appetite.

2
man.of.soup | 3 January 2012 - 1:23pm

I asked her

She had some rubbish excuse about a "close friend's birthday party" or something like that. A likely tale.

0
Joe R | 3 January 2012 - 7:02pm

Cheers Joe

I have no idea what she gets up to these days. Young people, eh?

0
man.of.soup | 4 January 2012 - 1:13pm

I have considered

several potential Mingle CD themes but I think I'll just do a "Things I Like That I've Not Put On Previous Mingle CDs" CD. And a Vivian Stanshall "Sir Henry Live At Brainwashing House" collection, if I can remember where the downloaded files are..

0
Mike_H | 3 January 2012 - 2:22pm

Podcast Announcement

With Hannah's blessing we're going to attempt to record a podcast on the night (it'll be our 200th). We aim to start at 7.15pm sharpish, and although we haven't quite figured out what we'll be doing yet, there'll no doubt be some kind of interactivity, so we'd advise an early arrival if you'd like to witness the recording or to take part - it'll also keep the disruption during recording to a minimum.

And if anyone wants to bring a musical instrument along, there may well be some kind of Later with Jools intro-meets-Kumbayah opportunity to be heard.

See you Friday.

3
Fraser Lewry | 3 January 2012 - 4:08pm

AMAZING.

*packs guitar*

*Massive, as one, fail to show*

This is excellent news, though. I'll be there early. Although if I'm there early, I make no guarantees about my already rudimentary "mad" guitar "skills".

0
Bob | 3 January 2012 - 4:40pm

Oooh, I'd be up for a bit of that as well

Shall I pack the tambourine too?

0
Stick | 3 January 2012 - 5:05pm

I've actually just had second thoughts.

I never know any of the music that everyone else likes, so I think the guitar is best left at home!

0
Bob | 3 January 2012 - 5:06pm

Bob - I'll bring mine

Which you can freely use and abuse if you change your mind :)

Hannah / Specs - bring yer keys!

0
Stick | 3 January 2012 - 5:11pm

My baby grand's on wheels...

If I start pushing it now I should be in central London for Friday. I'll need a hand getting it up the stairs at the pub though.

0
Hannah | 3 January 2012 - 5:33pm

Like this?

3
davebigpicture | 3 January 2012 - 6:12pm

I share your pain

I'll send you the chords for a couple of Tull numbers. We can do a duet!

0
Twangothan | 4 January 2012 - 11:29am

Could you sort them out

with a MHO song? Then at least you'll all still be there playing it when Beezer and I turn up in March.

3
Leedsboy | 4 January 2012 - 11:35am

Not too heavy on the banjo's

I'll give you that, Sunshine.

0
Beezer | 4 January 2012 - 11:55am

Hark...

Can I hear the call to arms of Words very own Ukelele orchestra?

0
Martin Simmonds | 3 January 2012 - 5:14pm

I won't be playing

but if anyone wants to borrow uke or keys then lmk

0
DogFacedBoy | 3 January 2012 - 5:16pm

OH MY DAYS

That is fantastic news. I'm even more excited now.

0
Joe R | 3 January 2012 - 7:02pm

So let me get this straight

This is the first London mingle I can't get to so you then decide to record a podcast there. It's like you've heard my singing voice and everything.

1
Leedsboy | 3 January 2012 - 9:34pm

Do you

cut down on beer or the kids new gear? etc.

0
DogFacedBoy | 3 January 2012 - 11:45pm

Watch it

or there'll be a row going on down near Slough.

0
Leedsboy | 4 January 2012 - 12:00am

Or

North Windsor Eton Village - as Retro Man likes to call it

0
DogFacedBoy | 4 January 2012 - 12:23am

ARGH!

I'd have loved to seen you lot catching lightning in a bottle!

*mutters darkly about atheist parents having a child christened in Germany of all places*

0
ganglesprocket | 3 January 2012 - 4:26pm

Well I think

its a step too far, thin end of the wedge, too clique-y and why does it have to be in London all the time? *

* Aside - I don't. I just wanted to get that guff out of the way

Can I produce a video bootleg? Three camera mix with DAT sound? :-)

0
DogFacedBoy | 3 January 2012 - 5:09pm

Hoping to be there

sans CDs as by the time I've packed the drum kit I don't think there will be room. I've got the chords for Ian Paice's "The Mule" so don't worry.....

1
fortuneight | 4 January 2012 - 11:48am

I hate living abroad. S'not fair.

.

1
Sting Ono | 4 January 2012 - 11:53am

Yeppity Yep

Looking forward to it; Son of Allan will be coming along too as before.

No instruments easy for me to bring on't train, as much as I'd like to. I might have a couple of sweet tims hanging around to bang on animal style though if you wish.

0
milkybarnick | 4 January 2012 - 4:03pm

Sounds fun

count me in! 1,2,3,4...

1
Captain Underpants | 4 January 2012 - 7:14pm

Damn

Bugger and blast it...

Going to have to call off (again) - this is becoming a rather tiresome habit.

Mrs toro entered hospital on Monday evening (bank holidays are great for people watching in A & E) and is still there whilst they try and get to the bottom of some, as yet unidentified, abdominal pains. Even if she comes out today it would be a tad insensitive to stroll of down to London tomorrow.

A pity really. Was looking forward to meeting you all again (assuming I could remember who everybody was) as well as meeting new pals. Had got my overnight stay pass stamped as well, so that will have to carry over to the next time. Just don't make it Friday 2nd March - I'v got a stag do to go to that weekend so couldn't mingle.

Particularly disappointed to miss the opportunity of making a late bid for a career in broadcasting as well, although I'm sure the Massivishnu Orchestra won't miss my wonky clapping.

Have a good time y'all*

*but not too good, if you don't mind.

0
el toro calvo grande | 5 January 2012 - 10:24am
Bob | 5 January 2012 - 11:03am

Cheers Bob

I will do.

She's now in until at least tomorrow a.m. as the ultrasound teccy is off sick today so her scan has been postponed until tomorrow.

Oh, and they've now decided she can eat after all, having kept her off food since admission (i.e. the last thing she had to eat was Monday lunch). This despite the abdominal pain still being undiagnosed.

Can you sense some frustration.

What's that you say? Our NHS is the best in the world? Probably so from the outside looking in, until you disappear into a labyrinth of bureaucracy, incompetence and just sheer scale.

0
el toro calvo grande | 5 January 2012 - 11:31am

So sorry to hear this.

Hope Mrs Toro gets better soon. Will miss seeing you tomorrow (and unfortunately the next mingle is Fri 2nd March, so won't see you at that one either). We'll see you in May, all being well. xx

0
Hannah | 5 January 2012 - 12:09pm

Hotel booked, mandolin greased..

Here we go!

1
Lenny Law | 5 January 2012 - 2:48pm

Instrument update

If you're thinking of bringing an instrument along, we want weird. We'll have one of these:

0
Fraser Lewry | 5 January 2012 - 3:00pm

Right. Sod the guitar.

I'll bring my tiny 70s Casio keyboard and a cello. That's the best I can do.

0
Bob | 5 January 2012 - 3:04pm

It's a measure of the world we live in

that Ukuleles are now considered conventional instruments! A few short years ago they were the height of novelty, now every bugger has one!

(Still bringing one though!)

0
Martin Simmonds | 6 January 2012 - 10:39am

I'll bring

my saxamaphone and play it like the master

0
jimmyshoes01 | 5 January 2012 - 3:06pm

Now that I'm out of Christmas hibernation...

...and am sitting up and taking notice, I'll be there.

0
Baskerville Old Face | 5 January 2012 - 4:03pm

If I can't find my euphonium

I'll bring a guitar

0
YTDS | 5 January 2012 - 6:21pm

count me in too

and see ya there.

0
rocker43 | 5 January 2012 - 9:58pm

I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

A lot.

Lots and lots, in fact.

0
Lenny Law | 6 January 2012 - 12:08am

Don't

rub it in.....

Seriously, have a good one.

Incidentally.....is the hotel you're staying in near the venue? When I get down to another mingle (probably May I guess) I'll be looking to stay over, so any recommendations would be gratefully accepted.

0
el toro calvo grande | 6 January 2012 - 12:41am

*Ignores Lenny*

0
Leedsboy | 6 January 2012 - 12:47am

Psst...

...Me & Carol From Luton (& Sheryl From Luton) arriving circa 6.45 with a bit of luck. Make sure a slab of Hannah's lemon cake awaits CFL, or there'll be a riot... I can't be held responsible etc etc...

0
Colin H | 6 January 2012 - 12:12am

Although sadly...

...I should say that I haven't had a chance to go to the butcher's, so won't be supplying grub this time. Apols.

0

What?

I get bouts of tinnitus in my right ear and it sometimes comes with a side order of throwing up and falling over. Today seems to be one such day. So, looks like I'm not going to make it tonight as aside from the anti social elements I'd only spend a lot of time saying "eh?". Bugger and bollocks.

Have a great evening and I look forward to the podcast. Hopefully see you all in March.

Nope

I was seriously thinking about turning up tonight but am off sick from work with a back/neck pain thing, so won't be able to make it.

For anyone thinking of driving via the M4, be aware that the Hammersmith flyover has been closed much of the week... do check and allow extra time (about a week).

Anyway, have fun everyone.
