And there's more...
Right. When are we next going to meet for a Mingle?

I think the time has come to find a new home for the mingle... while The Prince Arthur has been fab for a few years, I think we've finally outgrown it. Plus Tom, the landlord, has sold up, so it seems like a good time to move on. Stick has recommended a (very lovely) pub in St James. That's near Green Park / Piccadilly Circus / Oxford Circus / Bond Street / Hyde Park Corner stations (i.e. the following lines: Victoria, Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Central, Jubilee). We'd have our own private room there - and there's no booking charge or minimum spend, so, yay.
Hope the location sounds convenient for you!
Also intending to bring back the CD swaps and book swaps. And of course, the mini farmer's market ;-)
If we're going to be a private room, I'll see if we can plug ipods into the music system (or play stuff from the CD comps people bring). Also, I'll bring my uke, so if anyone else fancies a little singsong, let's go for it!
And I can't stress enough that we love having new faces along to the Mingles, so if you've not dipped your toe in yet then please consider joining us!
So! Go VOTE VOTE VOTE

If I start now,
I might just be able to cobble together a cd.
That pub does look very lovely - and (selfishly) much better for Victoria.
Hurrah!
Agreed...
...on both (or should that be all three) counts. I can only do the 16th though - fingers crossed as the voting takes it's inexorable corse.
Just 'cos I'm posting; today, whilst lying on an Italian beach, I listened to the Bobcast and happened to have - as next up on the book pile - Andy Gill's Stories Behind The Songs book on the Bobcat. A heady mix and I have been luxuriating in the serendipitous synergy all day - well, that and a rather fine Chanti Classico Riserva!
New venue
Two new chaps were walking away from the Prince Arthur in front of me. I overheard them saying they didn't like the venue. So they might turn up in St James.
It couldn't possibly be rockstar hangout of yore, Scotch of St James could it (or whatever that venue is clled now)? That would be so very Word.
Nice.
The pub is nearer Hampshire. Well done.
oh Lordy
Look, if it's in a crackhouse in Belgium, I'll be there.
good idea
Belgium is closer for me
As long as there's a reasonable hotel within staggering range..
I'm not paying over £90, mind. Ooh. The closest one is called The Ritz. That'll probably do.
I love their
little cheesy biscuits.
YES!
I missed the last one so will be attending this one most definitely. I can't bear the thought of anyone having fun without me.
And, as always, thanks for organising, Hannah :)
Super convenient for me
I know that pub, so I'm in.
Are we having a theme for the CDs this time?
There will be a theme for the cds.

although I'm confused re venue. Just looked up the pub (well one with the same name supposedly round the back of the Ritz) where the reviews describe it as dingy, crap service etc? Am I looking at the right one? There seem to be a couple of Blue Posts knocking around.
I'm in as usual
CD Theme? How about "Back to School" seeing as it is the start of the new school year.
Applying for my Pink Ticket right now..
New Venue
looks interesting.
I'll be there, finances etc. willing.
We need a good CD theme now.
Blue / ThatLondon / Rockist / Popist / FolkPolice / OuterLimits / HippyTrippy / JazzManCool / ...
If you're not done so already...
then vote vote vote. Will close the poll in the next day our so. It's a rather closely run poll this time so do get your votes in...
We have a date!
By popular vote, the next Mingle will be on
Friday 16th September from 6pm
at The Blue Posts, 6 Bennet Street, St James's, London, SW1A 1RP.
Glad most of you can come, see you there!
Big apologies to Phil, Steve Turner, Danny Baker, Lenny Law & his pie of wonder, and my splendid fellow Word Birds JoLean and KatyG that this is a date you can't do. You will be sorry missed (particularly the pie). Carl, I hope you're not too jet-lagged and can make this one after all.
I think mingle after this one will be early November, with another in mid-Januaryish... let's try and go bimonthly!
We'll see how things go with The Blue Posts. We've currently got the room booked for free, but they're extremely keen that we order some food otherwise they might smack me with a room hire charge :-(
I've said no to a buffet option (not everyone will want to eat, and I don't really want to go round collecting money off everyone all night...) but do people think that they might order a bit of food on the night? (I might try and find an alternate venue if not...)
Splendid.
Hopefully see you there

Thinking about CD themes.
I think we should keep it as simple as possible. Any discernable theme, with perhaps "Best Theme" and "Best Presentation" awards for those with a competitive streak.
No JoLean or KatyG?
My heart is now officially broken and may never mend... :o(
Ah!
My heart is broken too! Sad to miss it, but can't be helped*
Next time, I promise.
*if things change, I may make it, but looking unlikely.
Help me out here chaps...
OK, response so far to suggested new venue is not overwhelmingly positive.
I'm looking for an alternate venue. Will try and find somewhere else round Euston, as that seemed to work well for everyone.
Anyone have a venue / area to suggest?
Ideally we're after somewhere with easy on-street parking, access to mainline stations, free function room hire, low or no minimum spend, doesn't mind us bringing in our own food. We basically want the moon on a stick.

Moon on a stick
Great name for a pub that.
Been away for a few weeks so missed the vote but the date is fine for me. I'm easily pleased on venues. The company always makes it anyway!
Try
The King's Head on Westmoreland St, off Marylebone High Street and so close to Oxford St and Baker Street. It's a quiet place, off the main drag and whilst it's small downstairs, they have a function room upstairs (which I've never seen, so can't comment whether it would be any good), however the pub is a favourite of mine, staff and beer are good. Give it a try, believe tel no is 020 7 835 2201. Good luck.
Thanks Francis
I'm going to MHS tomorrow so I'll definitely peruse it.
The Lamb on Conduit Street, scene of a previous gathering
had a room upstairs if I remember. But as there was no big rush to go back for the next get-together I fear that was not a popular choice!
Hannah, what did the Blue Posts want as a minimum spend for food?
Hey Retro
The Lamb charges for its function room (not a huge amount, but I don't want to be wandering around all night trying to collect money off people).
Also, whilst the pub was nice, I didn't think it was brilliantly convenient travel-wise (happy to be contradicted).
Blue Posts haven't given a minimum, but they were pushing the food option and saying that they would want "some" to be ordered. Given that, I don't think our usual practice of turning up laden down with food will be welcomed....
Just tell 'em
Drakeygirl will leave an iPhone or camera behind - that should cover the cost of the room.
How about The Clarence on Dover Street?
Directly opposite The Ritz, so in the same part of town as The Blue Posts.
I used to drink there on summer nights in the early '90's with a crowd of lads after playing baseball after work in Green Park.
Admittedly I haven't been there since but I remember it as a thoroughly good boozer and would suit us lot now.
Cheers for the bonzer boozer Beezer
I'll check it out. Trying to find somewhere closer to Euston tho', seems to suit most people better.
Understood, H
It's potentially a VERY Word friendly place. One evening, dressed in shorts, t-shirt and a sheen of sweat, I walked into The Clarence between 2 very tall blokes in earnest conversation stood either side of the entrance. Nick Lowe and Huey Lewis.
Imagine if that were to happen at a Word Mingle? The spodular/nerdlinger co-efficioent would be off the scale.
New thread here
with new new venue info. We've moved again, back towards Euston by popular request.
