L.O.L W.T.F... THIS SO GA.....

Chris G's picture

The geniuses at The Onion are bang on a usual as they nail the delight which is You Tube and other online comment logs where the general public can leave anon posts. http://www.theonion.com/content/news/local_idiot_to_post_comment_on?utm_...

Apart from here and a few trusted blogs I've stopped reading the comments on news sites, you tube etc they never enlighten or entertain just annoy, am I alone?

You're post

was like TOTELY GAY.

And entirely right.

I often read on appalled at the level of mindless invective to be found in the comments on You Tube in particular - often long after the vid has finished playing - such is my bewilderment at how unpleasantly worked-up some of that site's frequenters get over the least disagreement. And then I get this warm glow at being part of the gently affectionate community we have here - even The Squire was just mildly chided and had a little fun poked at him.
PS As the sharper-eyed among us will have noticed, my previous was a reply rather than a new comment. Over-eagerness got the better of me.

PPS

The better-rested among us will have realised that my PS above was redundant - the first comment
after a post is a reply (Fraser, how would I italicise "is" back there?). I got up too early this morning and am starting to flag. And I promise this is my last entry on this thread until someone else has had a go. I'll shut up now.

Flag as inappopriate

Scandalously, thousands of schools have blocked YouTube altogether just because of the moronic comments underneath the most innocent video clips.

You'll be showing the class a clip describing how an oxbow lake is formed and suddenly notice "omg dis is so gay WTF F-BUSH WAKE UP AMERICA!!! LOL!!!! =)" etc, etc.

First! Errmm - or maybe fifth

Why do many idiots feel compelled to post comments with no other content than that they are the first to do so? It's as if they had conquered a new territory, but then didn't know what to do once they got there.

I just

watch the videos. I have never actually read any comments. Part of me feels I haven't missed anything. However, I know I'm going to start reading them now.

Damn you.

Don't do it!

On reading the posts you will despair of the world and forget to feel comforted by the fact that the mechanism simply brings them together, fly's around a honey pot and hopefully off the streets in their rooms late at night.......er like us then

Try reading the comments on certain US newspaper websites...

....it makes you wonder what goes on in people's minds.
If they can shoehorn in a comment on immigration they will.
I used to read them to amuse myself but now it's just depressing.

The youtube comments are just weird, and bear very little relation to the clip.

I'm glad that the Word Blog doesn't resort to this, only minor squabbling over the merits of The Wire and Richard Thompson

UK websites too

Thankfully there is a site which collects the worst ones in one place to spare you hours of searching:

Thanks, Gatz!

This is fascinating and scary stuff. One small quibble : it might save hours of searching, but I could get lost in there all day. I suppose it's good to have my self-restraint muscles given a good workout once in a while....

Erm..

Isn't that what you tube does already?! ;) Thanks for the link I won't check it out "comment" is scab I've promised myself to stop picking.

If I'm uploading a music video to YouTube

I always make sure all the "do not allow comments" or ratings boxes are firmly ticked.

Not just for the facts highlighted above about the geeks, creeps and weirdos but I just don't get this modern obsession with star-ratings (One reason I love The Word!) I want people to enjoy whatever video is posted simple as that.
Everything seems to be geared towards "look at me!" how many friends I've got on MySpace, how many 5 star ratings, how many nice comments I get telling me how wondeful I am - in that case I guess you have to accept if you want the attention - some of it might be of the slightly weird variety!

I'm mixed on blocking comments

for my own films as I do like people saying nice things and just have to put up with the comments of mad dannish students. I do get encouraged when someone from france sends me an positive note, you do get request from pornsites and spamming guitar freeks though.

As for the stars I never pay much attention to them ,the only downside to turning them off is that I think Youtube uses them for ranking clips so that more people will see them if they are in the "current hot 20" etc it's the eternal problem of promoting things.

That's a good point

about the star ranking system, never thought of it that way.

One thing that I find is quite satisfying though is having administrative access to a web-site and forum - not only do you get the pleasure of pressing the "delete" button on any "the bassist is a w****r" posts but you get to be able to find out which rock these idiots are hiding under! *insert Dr. Evil style villainous laugh here*

I think only a saint wouldn't be interested

in comments on their own work. On the whole i rarely delete comments unless they are racist etc as the people I respect can spot a w**ker amile off, but yes seeing where these toads crawl from is amusing!
I've said before the most useful comments and troll free speech are on sites with "buy in" like this one were people post their own blogs and so if they dish it out will get jumped on if they post something themselves but also on flickr where the only negative comments I've had are from anon posters without any pictures uploaded themselves.
