Lloyd Cole... He's aces!
Posted by Adman on 13 September 2010 - 10:10pm.
Here's a track from Lloyd's new album Broken Record. It's called 'Writer's Retreat' and it's very lovely, as you might expect.
He played live on the Radcliffe and Maconie show this evening, and I urge you to 'listen again' if you didn't listen already.
A top chap, and a true talent.
I love Lloyd!

Strikes me the moral of this song - there never has been one!
He is still so good but, hey, no need to cause a commotion over it!
Lloyd Cole
Marvellous. That's all.
Marvellous but
I had to listen with my eyes closed!
Can we cross-reference to that thread about things that suddenly made you feel really old? As a callow student I so wanted to be / have hair like Lloyd Cole.
P.S. A nod to 'You Wear It Well' I think at 1.09.
He was on 5 Live yesterday reviewing music
Caustic and wonderful as ever. I also heart Lloyd.
I hope Fraser doesn't mind me sticking up this snippet of him on the show.
I'm a big Lloyd fan and have
I'm a big Lloyd fan and have been ever since I heard Perfect Skin on The Rock 'N Roll Years on the BBC in the mid-90s. I've devoured and adored his back catalogue and his shows are always terrific entertainment.
Heard that on Mark and Lard
it's a great song. Will buy the album if I can find a shop that might sell it.
New album
I was sent a promo about six weeks ago. Have to say, Broken Record is one of his best. The track 'Why In The World' is really lovely.
eMusic
It's on eMusic now as well. First thing to download when my new downloads arrive.
By coincidence
I am listening to his new one as I read this. I think that it's excellent but then I am apparently one of his dedicated hard core following, according to his interview, as I was one of the 1000 people that paid $45 upfront to finance the recording. Money well spent just to help get it made but I got a 2CD box set. The second cd comprises rough mixes, early versions of songs etc.
You can buy most of his stuff direct from him and he will sign & dedicate it if you want. I'd recommend the '12 songs in 12 hours for $12' that he did with the Small Ensemble. It's not available anywhere else as far as I know.
Hey BryanD
Could you message me off-board?

Just bought it on play.com...
... sounds like it could be good 'un.
I'm biased
but the new one is brilliant. About as Word massive friendly as an album can be. I know most don't share my opinion but I reckon LC's 21st century has been even better than his 20th century was. Since 2000: the Negatives, Music in a Foreign Language, Antidepressant and now Broken Record are all superb, unfairly ignored, albums.
For anyone wo left him behind 15/20 years ago it's well worth giving him another go - and the new one is a good place to start.
I totally agree.
Music In A Foreign Language is a masterpiece.
One of my favourite records by anyone, ever.
He hasn't made a bad album
Since Bad Vibes. It is criminal that a lyricist so great is marginalised so far and has to answer questions about his 80s output because that's what 'everyone' remembers.
I love 'Plastic Wood' and 'etc' too.
I hope Fraser doesn't mind, but here is an edited version of the Radcliffe and Maconie Show complete with three live songs.
Etc is utterly terrific.
Etc is utterly terrific.
You're right
Possibly my favourite LC album after Antidepressant. If the record label had released it after Love Story as planned it might have got his career back on track. As it is, just the most overlooked of all his overlooked solo albums...
Would be a great guest for the Podcast
Have been a fan for years and agree that some of his stuff since Commotions has been fantastic! Check out Side 1 of "Don't Get Weird On Me Babe", six songs with an orchestra. In particular, listen to "Half of Everything"....
Lloyd Cole
Lloyd also inspired one of the great tabloid headlines of 2010. When there was something of a 'rumpus' about Cheryl Cole favouring Cher Lloyd over other contestants on The X Factor, The Sun's headline was...
Lloyd, Cole and The Commotion!
Well, I liked it...
Notepads
Can a Word reader and Lloyd fan whose mother *didn't* force them down to the recycling centre with all their back issues please help me out?
There was a feature on Lloyd in the magazine at either the time Music In A Foreign Language came out (summer 2003) or the same time the following year when he was touring it. In it, he referred to the kind of notepad used by the journo.
Can someone please tell me what kind it was? As a recent devotee of Moleskines, I'm hoping he unconciously decided for me that I should start with them. Thanks kindly.
