Lloyd Cole and his Small Ensemble
Posted by Andrew2 on 24 June 2011 - 3:14pm.
When:
23 June 2011
Where:
The Ark, Ann Arbor, MI, USA
Comments:
The Ark is a small folk club venue and perfect for watching Lloyd Cole and two others use acoustic guitars, a mandolin and banjo to reinvent his back catalogue. The simple but beautifully played arrangements make the lyrics come to the fore - showing what a wonderful turn of phrase he has and how funny he can be. Many of his more recent songs dealing with middle aged angst were well received - but stripped down versions of 2CV, Perfect Skin and Heartbroken worked equally well
After all these years he still seems almost shy on stage - but the between song asides were fresh and witty - a wonderful relaxed vibe.
The Audience:
Middle aged and proud of it. A large proportion of women in this this college town gig - the "thinking womans crumpet" perhaps?
Food & Drink:
Before the gig a fine pizza and "UK style hand pulled pale ale" in the Grizzly Peak Brewery around the corner. Inside - Zingermans famous brownies and a Jamesons and no line at the bar -- civilization!
It Made Me Think...:
The venue was half full - I guess curmudgeon rock is a niche market.
