Liane Carroll

I saw Liane for the second time at the Highgate Jazz and Soul Festival at the weekend. A few years after first encountering her on TV coverage of the Brecon Jazz fest, I'm still at a loss as to why she is relatively unknown beyond jazz circles and the confines of bar residencies in her hometown of Hastings. Not only a naturally gifted pianist, she inhabits a song like Amy Winehouse, with the vocal range and soul of Joni Mitchell in her mid-'70s prime.
If she's at a small venue round your way, check her out. She may be a contented forty-something grandmother without the requisite back story for super-stardom, but she's special.

My home town
I can see her play every week, should I so desire, at Porters Wine Bar in Hastings Old Town. *smug look*
She's a phenomenal singer/pianist. I'm not really a jazz fan, but I believe she has an international reputation in jazz circles(?)
Definitely transcends the 'jazz' pigeonhole
I felt privileged to be in her midst, just simply as a singer/songwriter/musician - that's how good she is.
Lucky you! :-)
Incredibly unknown/underrated
Very funny too... as well as her on-stage asides, I was sitting on the next table to her at a restautrant once, and she's hysterical... I highly recommend her solo (i.e. just her piano, no band) album, "Billy No Mates".
