Let's celebrate Too-Rye-Ay
Posted by Dave Amitri on 2 September 2011 - 8:39pm.
For no other reason than it is bloody marvelous. Haven't listened to "Come On Eileen" for ages and it is a fantastic song when heard away from wedding dance floors. I'm going for "Old", what a song. I'm sure there's many of us here who heard it in '82 and hear a very different song now. Too-Rye-Ay indeed........

Celtic Soul Brothers
I'd always hide away and listen to this on my jumbo headphones whenever I needed my spirits lifted. I was sixteen and it was the worst year of my life. For that alone, I love Dexys.
And Bad Manners for Can-Can.
Old Great Song
great album too love Celtic Soul Brothers,Plan B in fact all of it love it,thanks for posting
Yes!
Nice one, Dave. There's nothing like listening to Dexys.
While the other two albums are critics' favourites, for me this is their equal. As you say, Come on Eileen now regarded as wedding fodder, but an amazing blast of randy pop.
Kevin Archer saga maybe also diminished it for some, but to be brutal, K Rowland had it and K Archer didn't.
Whole album great - Kevin testifying, raving, crying his way to the top of the hit parade.
Liars A to E probably my favourite.
Right on
I think it's their best album by far. Admittedly I've only heard Don't Stand Me Down once, but once was enough. Too-Rye-Aye had the choons, and the whole raggletaggle thing fitted them far better than the young soul rebel schtick of the first album.
Don't Stand Me Down (Director's Cut)
May be my favourite album ever made. Absolutely love it - why they made some of the editing decisions that they did on the original release is a sheer mystery to me.
Kevin Archer
Speaking of Kevin Archer (which no one except me was), this is just about the saddest item on the whole of youtube.
Aye. Very interesting stuff.
Did he say he wrote Geno there? Feel sorry for him but you can't help thinking, in another world, having co-written Geno and getting royalties from Too-Rye-Ay would be a cause for celebration and a positive stepping stone. Life's never that simple I suppose.
Plan B
Lets Make This Precious
One of my favourite Dexys tunes, which considering Dexys are one of my all time favourite bands, makes this one of my all time favourite songs. And the lyrics in the breakdown are probably at least a little bit responsible for the bias in my musical tastes towards music without guitars.
"First let's hear somebody sing me a record
That cries pure and true.
No not those guitars. They're too noisy and crude.
The kind that convinces refuses to leave,
There's no need to turn it up.
If it's pure I'll feel it from here"
The concert film
"The Bridge" pretty much sums up this whole period of Dexys for me.
Magnificent.
I detested that song when it came out...
and I detest it now.Yucchhh.
My Wife
has a rule that when Come on Eileen comes on, it is time to leave the party. She is pretty serious about it.
Come On Eileen
Always my karaoke song of choice. Girly little bastard always made it nice and easy to drop an octave.
I clearly remember going to this gig in Newcastle in 1982
It was free if I remember correctly and one of the first times they unveiled the 'gypsy' look.
Celtic Soul Brothers
Fantastic album. I think I must have bought it at least three items now.
"You must be fucking joking"
is my favourite little Kevin aside on the album (aside: it is)
I adored THAT song and this album whgen I were a nipper and adore it today, have bought every single new edition. I can't pretend I understoodd a lot of what he was singing about then and maybe don't now but by god its a wonderful sound.
Until I believe in my soul
best Dexys song ever and there were a few. Lets hope there is a new album next year.
WHAT a voice, what a corking sound;
one of my favourite albums in Searching For The Young Soul Rebels.
Cheers for the excellent clips guys.
