Let's bring back the "LP"
Posted by Richard Lowe on 25 February 2010 - 10:08pm.
I was half listening to the Radcliffe & Maconie show earlier and Miranda Sawyer was on talking about a singer she'd been to see. Beth someone ...didn't quite catch it. But, anyway, she said that Beth was working on a new "LP". Such a great word (or is it a phrase?) And one that I haven't heard for ages. Much better than "album", which sounds a bit pretentious.

I never stopped
saying LP. As Billy Joel didn't sing - 'CD, cassette. DCC, download, MD - its still LP to me'
Although it stands for "Long Player"
An "LP" should have a legally-enforceable maximum of twelve "tracks".
And it should have a playing time of between 30 and 35 minutes.
Longer than a single or an EP, anyway.
Long Player is a subjective term, I suppose. Compact discs aren't that compact when compared to a minidisc or an iPod shuffle.
I think we should appropriate the Italian word...
disco.
I use it all the time
As someone who writes reviews from time to time, it's a very handy synonym for when you've already used "album" or "record" in a paragraph. I never use the phrase "sophomore release" though - eurgh.
Was it...
...Geordie folkstress Beth Jeans Houghton by any chance?
Under attack from Apple
I'm astonished to find that there is no 'album shuffle' function on my new iphone. Why would they remove functionality that presumably doesn't take up much space?
Yep, that was a nasty
Yep, that was a nasty surprise for me too. I actually considered taking it back, as it is one of my most used features. Anyway I did a bit of digging - the functionality is there but not exposed in Apple's implementation of the music player, so you can install a third party app to do album shuffle - I use one called "fluxtunes" or there are some free ones as well I believe (eg smart shuffle, but I've not tried this one myself).
In fairness, Apple are doing their bit to keep the 'LP' alive...
