Let them eat cake

ImageIn a changing world it's good to know that somewhere standards are being maintained.

Fraser got the autumn term off to a strong start this morning by turning up with a "chocolate, ginger and wasabi cake with a dusting of black sesame seed". This cake has been broached by the team, the knife wielded by Mark Ellen who expects us to believe he missed a meal yesterday, so we are not in a position to offer you anything more than a virtual slice.

Can the catering in your working environment match this?

My working enviroment...

is my house, so I'll have to make do with spelt bread and coffee while keeping an eye on the transfer countdown! I wouldn't mind the receipe for that cake though!!

Your wish

Fraser Lewry | 1 September 2008 - 11:07am

Excellent!...

Thanks a lot, I'll bet it tastes better than spelt bread!

humphreym | 1 September 2008 - 11:18am

Fraser

Have you ever been mistaken for Ben Folds? Just wondered.....

Simon Ford | 1 September 2008 - 1:57pm

Not

Until today.

johncake

Well maybe... Today, I brought in one of my much-loved (he says, modestly) cakes to the office. It's a cheesecake-base type thing with coconut, chocolate and mixed nuts not so much sprinkled as heaped generously on top..

It doesn't have a name as such, but in here, they call it johncake. And they ask for it by name.

We've shot a picture of it for the notice-board. I'm not sure the policy on posting pics here but, rest assured, it's a tasty treat..

I can't top wasabi though..

John Connolly | 1 September 2008 - 11:04am

Is that from

Wagamama?

eddie g | 1 September 2008 - 11:18am

Nope

It's from my kitchen.

Fraser Lewry | 1 September 2008 - 11:50am

Not a lot of home baking here

But lots of biscuits, which must be avoided.

We once had a freelance send in a banana cake, which gave me the idea of a freelance bake-off to see who gets work on the strength of their devil's food cake.

Wasabi in a cake?

Get ready for the terrible sensation of "behind the eyes burning"!

Retro Man | 1 September 2008 - 11:36am

Tried to educate

our steadfastly London centric office in the ways of my family's homemade parkin but it fell of "deaf" palates. Failing that the Tiffin cake i made went down well went down well.

Cake

While we're on the subject (and it is near lunchtime), anyone got a favourite food song? Here's a starter.....

Crowdedmouse | 1 September 2008 - 11:56am

For your side salad

I'm getting hungry now -

Eggs and Sausage - Tom Waits
Jambalaya - Hank Williams
Wine with Dinner - Loudon Wainwright III(more about the booze really).

Lovely

I cannot beat homemade cakes in our office but I always provide a nibbles corner wherever I work. So you have a choice of Pingvin liquorice from my business trip through Denmark, White Rabbit sweets and peanuts covered in coconut cream from a local chinese supermarket and wasabi flavoured fried green peas that only I like. Yummy.

Every month or so......

......when we have to work a Saturday or Sunday we have a *Taste Test*.

Just recently it was Jaffa Cakes. We compare the *real* thing with all the supermarkets own brands. Every Christmas it's mincemeat pies.

I generally don't get involved as I get sickened too quickly but some of the guys debate the whole weekend!

bigsteviecook | 1 September 2008 - 2:31pm

we did a less than

definitive test of tea particularly what happens when you drink breakfast tea in the afternoon and afternoon blend in the morning!

We also had to settle whether Irish Cadbury's Dairy milk was better than the english variety and that led on to the battle of the crisps........

Chris G | 1 September 2008 - 3:41pm

alright alright

the jig is up

one of you two is *obviously* that bloke from www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com aren't you.

I was once told by someone rich and successful...

that my lemon and strawberry cheesecake was superior to the one served at posh London restaurant La Gavroche. Seeing as I am very unlikely to ever eat there myself, I will probably never make this comparison myself.

I think the Word

should have an office cake competition and report the detailed findings on the website with everyone joining in and the winner having the recipe published in all its glory ! ( it will be the musical equivalent of radio 4 cricket commentary ).

vgom | 1 September 2008 - 7:09pm

ROCK CAKE feature! (sorry)

Chris G | 1 September 2008 - 8:34pm
