Let it be - underrated
I was listening to the Let It Be album yesterday (the "naked" version but either will do) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's often dismissed as the sound of a band falling apart or just a collection of songs not good enough for Abbey Road. But I think it's more than this.
There are the two stand-out ballads of Let It Be and Long and Winding Road (two of McCartney's best) and the really nice harmony duet of Two Of Us, the rock vocals of I've Got a Feeling and George's I Me Mine. Then add the Cavern-era One After 909, the hippyish Across The Universe and the slide guitar playing on For You Blue and you've got a collection of songs any band would be proud of. And I haven't even mentioned Get Back.
Go on, revisit this album. You'll be glad you did.

I don't have to revisit it
because I've always rated it. It's a fine album, but my favourite configuration is the Glyn Johns "Final Mix". Add the live rooftop recordings and you've got an incredible slab o' Fab!
(Oh, and as it was recorded before Abbey Road "a collection of songs not good enough for Abbey Road" doesn't make a whole lot of sense?)
I prefer the GJ mix
its a far more warts n all take like the original plan for the album

Blighted by the film?
I also think it has been unfairly slated. Their worst album? Frankly, any album with Get Back, Let It Be, Across the Universe, Two of Us, Long and Winding Road can't be a bad album. I do think there is a bigger % of the weaker material (Dig a Pony, I've Got a Feeling, I Me Mine, Maggie Mae, Dig It) than any other HJH album, which probably colours judgement a little, along with the rather depressing film and context that surround it. It isn't a 'joyful' album, like all of their others - I think you can see why it had such a painful gestation and delayed release.
I do think they missed a trick with LIB Naked - a dreadful title for a start! - when they could have made a really nice set with the rooftop concert etc.
Let It Be
is by far one of my favourite HJH albums - I certainly prefer it to Sgt. Peppers'. I've Got A Feeling, Dig A Pony, I Me Mine - some of the best songs on it 'n all.
in a curious kind of way
it may be my favourite Beatles album simply because it was the first one I heard
...Naked
for me, the cut-back arrangements serve the songs just as well if not better than the Spectorized version, though the off-the-cuff remarks should have been left in to give it a looser feel.
Forgotten Gems.
Has always been my fave, for sentimental reasons in that it was the first LP of theirs I had when I was a kid. And as much as Sgt. Pepper is marked as the classic for its ideas and production I've always preferred records where you can hear the band playing as a band and hear the sound of the room. 'Two of Us' is my fave Beatles song: a simple, lilting, uncomplicated love song.
Let it be
I remember sneering at the tracks 'Let it be' and 'Long and Winding Road' when I was a callow 16 year old. I was going through a rockist phase. Nowadays, I can appreciate the beauty and the poignancy of 'Let it be'. It makes me feel very serene. Agree abut 'Two of Us' being a joyous song.

Lott made some very pertinent points about Let It Be (Naked) & having listened to both since, I have to say, I think Lott's right.
The Long and Winding Road
I like the album and, as far as favourite Beatle is concerned, I'm definately a Paul man. However, I've always disliked The Long and Winding Road. I don't really know what it is I don't like about it, as I generally like his piano ballads, but it's just never grabbed me.
I've Got A Feeling though, brilliant. Stand-out from that album for me.
Two Of Us and I've Got A Feeling
Best two tracks on the album for me. I prefer McCartney when he is not trying to write a serious, big, important song and is more informal and immediate sounding.
Agreed
Two Of Us is ace. I definately agree too, that when he uses a lightness of touch it is generally better than a grand gesture.
