Less than imaginative lyrics

spt's picture

This popped onto the ipod this morning

As a teenager I once counted the number of times La Eldritch sang the word "Heartland" during this. Can't now remember whether it was in the region of 120 or 170 times. I think it was the latter (though because of the fade it's difficult to be precise).

What's the record for the repetition of a single word in a song?

It must be this

It had to be done

A tally based on a single listen each has Paul Johnson ahead with 159 "down"s against Eldritch's 135 "heartland"s.

The gauntlet is down.

although

this transcript has Paul J at 213 "Down"s - and I'm not sure I'm ready to argue.

Following a number of early evening pints

in the garden of the University Arms, the number of "downs" has been reviewed. Two consecutive corroborating counts suggest 154 "downs", but only if you take the first line as "Down, down, down, down, down". Closer listening suggests the fourth "down" in that line and similar subsequent lines is not fully articulated ie it is "Down, down, down, der-down". This removes some 18 "downs" from the count, leaving 136 - just the slenderest of leads over the Sisters.

The committee will now review O Superman.

I can't bear to count this...

... but there are surely a lot of "no's" in this

And there are one or two "doops" in this

There are limits

On a single count I make it a piffling 79 "no"s in No Limits.

And I'm officially declaring "doop" to be a non-word. Mainly cos I can't be arsed to count, but given the vocals kick in so late I suspect it would have come up short anyhow.

Nah! HJ Na's win hands down

Apparently there are 194 Na's in Hey Jude...

0
Stephen G | 8 April 2011 - 2:47pm

Ah but see adjusted figure for Paul Johnson

and following the terms of the Doop judgement ("SPT vs Ganglesprocket" 8/4/2011) "na" is not a word.

O Superman

has at least 314,765 'ha's in it. Although it was only said once and then looped. Is that cheating ?

Lemon Kitten | 8 April 2011 - 2:54pm

I'm going to have to refer that one

as my late lunchtime has just run out...

No Superman!

Duly considered. Looping is acceptable, as there is no reason to believe any of the contenders failed to take advantage of such recording techniques. However, the "ha" in O Superman! a semi-enunciated exclamatory sound and hence not a word.

I declare Heartland disqualified

it's the only decent tune up there

OK, let's go a bit left field here

Whilst the title refers to "Nom", I do believe it is actually "numb" (and hence a proper word), as it is a paean to the futility of surfing YouTube looking for clips which aren't a complete and utter waste of your time.

And to pick up on one of the comments there, I like the part when he says "Numb".
