Lesley Duncan RIP

Douglas's picture

Yet another obituary for next month's edition I'm afraid:

I'd never heard of her...

but I'd just like to say that she was a very beautiful woman judging from that photograph. Genuinely beautiful, that is, not in a 'I'm wearing tons of slap and designer outfits' kind of a way.

You may not have heard *of* her, but

I bet you have heard her sing, Patrick. Most famously, she sings harmony vocals, beautifully, on her own composition, 'Love Song' from Elton's Tumbleweed Connection album.

Her original is even simpler, and even more sublime.

and if you want to hear it...

Given that she ..

..did most of her work as a session singer, most people under the age of about 50 may never have heard of Lesley.
I was 19 when her "Sing Children Sing" album came out, and the title track still swirls around inside my head on occasion.
A sad loss of a wonderful voice.

Close to tears ..

.. listening to that, Remote Control.
I'd forgotten about that one.

So many times when our emotions are strongly affected by the "Not so famous", "Not celebrity" artists.

Ditto re. "Everything

Ditto re. "Everything Changes" - such a gorgeous voice and song. RIP

Damn, another one gone

There was a time when Lesley was getting pushed almost as a British Carole King. A different style but very talented nonetheless and a lovely, lovely voice. Thanks for posting Love Song RC, but was all that background racket on the original?
As noted above she did a lot of session work. Melody Maker used to run a weekly singles review column where an artist was played new releases, without being informed of whom was being played. I do remember being very impressed when Lesley did it, because with her session experience she could recognise the signature sound of British studios and name them when they came up.

Nice summary here

http://thehelplessdancer.wordpress.com/2010/03/21/lesley-duncan/

Near the bottom of the page you will details of her re-recording of Sing Children Sing as a charity single in 1979. There are some worthy backing vocalists on the song.

Lesley Duncan's music

Lesley Duncan's beautiful music has been part of my life since 1972.

For further information see the website http://www.lesleyduncan.net/, the page http://www.myspace.com/lesleyduncan, or join her Yahoo group http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/lesleyduncan4scorner/ .
We’re hoping that Lesley’s last three albums may one day be rereleased on CD, perhaps even with some bonus tracks. The websites and Yahoo group will have further information when it’s available.

From her own favourite of her albums, "Moon Bathing":
"Letting the day go, just spendin' time
Watching the fire glow and drinking wine
Nothing upon my mind
Leaving it all behind
Gently melt away
Into the soft light..."

What about the early ones?

I have Sing Children Sing and Earth Mother, but I'd really like to get Everything Changes and Moonbathing as well; yet they don't seem to be available, any ideas?
