Lennon's - may not contain actual John Lennon

peterafifer's picture

There's a pub in Dundee called Lennon's. It's nice. Bands play there like Ringer. They're good too.

Unfortunately a Ms Ono of Upper West Side New York - or solicitors acting on her behalf - have sent the manager a cease and desist letter on the basis that the general public may be under the misimpression that the pub is somehow officially endorsed by 1972's fourth most successful ex-Beatle.

Just in case of any doubt, can I make it clear to anyone visiting Dundee that Lennon's pub may have nice photos on the wall of the peacenik who liked a long lie but he won't be behind the bar offering to pull you a pint of 80 shilling. Contain your disappointment fabs fans.

Lennon

I look forward to receiving a cease and desist letter myself, for unauthorized use of the surname, despite it being the one I was born with.

Come on Yoko, have a go!

Radcliffe and Maconie

were discussing it today and Maconie got quite worked up over what a daft place it must be and how he'd never go in some place called 'Lennon's Pub'.

If I were called

McDonald would I be able to open cafe named in my honour? I presume I would soon receive a lawyer's letter from you-know-who but would they be able to stop me?

Yes

Michael McDonald in unbelievably litigious.
What a Fool Believes, indeed.

Why the reactionary outrage?

If the pub has pictures of Lennon on its walls, then it's clearly trading on the man's name and reputation.

It's on its arse

Like almost every other pub in Dundee. I don't think they're raking in any cash that would be going Yoko's way. Now it has to pay to have its signage changed. It might be not be original or inspirational but Sean's not exactly starving, is he?

And just to recap: it's a pub. In Dundee, for heaven's sake.

Not sure I feel "outrage."

Not sure I feel "outrage." But it does seem more than little petty for a multimillionaire like Yoko to go after a small-time pub owner for having a theme in his bar.

Only to the same extent as....

the Groucho Club, but I bet his heirs are flattered rather than coming over all offended and proprietorial.

Both have been dead for over 30 years, and both - with their painted-on tash or wire-rimmed specs and all - are by now icons in the public domain, not properties to be licensed or exploited by professional widows.

The pub

has indeed many fotos of the great man, and his three chums.
The one night I was in it did indeed play Beatle records non stop..... but will the owners of the bar not pay something to the MU or whatever?
Where's the problem?

They should rename it

Lennon's (Ono: It Isn't)

If she's mad at this...

...wait till she finds out what Liverpool airport is called now. (avoid urge to use winky emoticon)

Seems there's a small Massive contingency in this part of the world. I'm an actual Dundonian but can't add anything useful here as I rarely venture into the pubs of my fine city so am not even sure where this pub is/(soon to be) was, let alone what it's like inside.

Lando Cakes - lead us

We could have a Dundee Massive meet up an a'. Lando Cakes should lead the way to Lennon's when Chris Marra's playing.

A quick rebranding 'MacKenzies'

Tear down the Lennon stuff which has feck all to do with Dundee, and decorate it with pictures of the 'Party Fears Two' hitmaker. Sorted.

I agree with Yoko

There, I've said it.

It's a bit cheeky trading on Lennon's name in such a blatant fashion (although the same could be said of every second business in Liverpool).

Andrew - I've been to the bar in question and noted that Lennon's is on Castle Street, no more than 50 yards from the statues of Desperate Dan and Minnie The Minx right in the centre of Dundee.

The sign out the front is/was a stylised version of John's White Album insert photo.

Dan and Minnie were hugely impressive. Lennon's bar much less so.

Blimey.

It's even worse than I imagined.

I hope she sues the shameless buggers into the ground.

Neil Lennon

Hasn't the poor man had enough with letter bombs and threats and ginger hair and all that, without a pending letter from Yoko to deal with as well.....
