Leaving Me Now

David Wright's picture

A friend of a friend, nicknamed "The White Spirit", has requested people submit suitable songs to be played at her leaving party on Saturday, before she goes travelling round the world with her partner.
Any idea’s what to suggest? I know this is the Massive's speciality.
She's looking for spirited but not totally obvious songs.
I'll start the ball rolling and get into the white spirit of proceedings with Marillion's Map Of The World, as I guess not that many people will have heard of it. Thanks in anticipation.

"Northern Sky"

by Nick Drake. Although it's more spiritual than spirited, it'd make a magnificent closing track to the evening.

Marillion...

... and Nick Drake - she's in for a fantastic evening! ;)

Pogues - Sally Maclanane

We walked him to the station in the rain,
we kissed him as we put him on the train,
and we sang him a song of times long gone,
though we knew that we'd be seeing him again

I'm sad to say I must be on my way
So buy me beer and whiskey 'cause I'm going far away
I'd like to think of me returning when I can
To the greatest little boozer and to Sally MacLennane

and a different 'Northern Skies' - I Am Kloot

DogFacedBoy | 16 August 2011 - 3:23pm

I cannot even read the lyrics to that

without shouting out "FAR AWAY!" and smacking myself in the head. (Anyone who's seen the Pogues live should understand why. If you haven't, all you need to know is it involves Spider Stacey providing percussion with the help of a tin tray and his noggin).

"London"

by The Smiths.
Great to go mental to. The soundtrack to one thousand goodbyes.

0
drilltime | 16 August 2011 - 3:25pm

Hall & Oates

She's Gone - not exactly fitting but the first song that came into my head when I read your post.

0
SimonL | 16 August 2011 - 3:25pm

I suppose it's too obvious

to suggest Leavin' On A Jet Plane?

0
Five-Centres | 16 August 2011 - 3:31pm

No Worries

No that's fine, that song came up on my "Fear Of Flying" thread last year!

0
David Wright | 16 August 2011 - 3:40pm

Jet plane

I had my leaving do for a job at an open mic night at which I performed this song "ironically". The entire audience sang the chorus at the top of their voices. I had no idea it is so popular!

Twangothan | 16 August 2011 - 6:49pm

Got to be Stevie..

I Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer

0
Johnny The Fox | 16 August 2011 - 4:12pm

How about...

See You - Depeche Mode
Trans Europe Express - Kraftwerk
London Bye Ta Ta - David Bowie
Go - Moby
My Old School - Steely Dan
This World Over - XTC
The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul - Ruben Blades (not the XTC version)

0
pocket.calculator | 16 August 2011 - 4:24pm

The XTC suggestions above

This World Over is about nuclear war and The Man Who Sailed Around Soul is about coming to terms with your own mortality. Might kill the party atmosphere somewhat.

0
Zanti Misfit | 16 August 2011 - 11:19pm

Surely

All Around The World - Lisa Stansfield

has to be included

0
Humphrey Plugg | 16 August 2011 - 4:34pm

Lisa Stilton

I guess it does, in a cheesy kind of way!

PIL - Rise

0
el hombre malo | 16 August 2011 - 11:09pm

I can't believe

nobody has suggested 'Spirit In The Sky', considering the OP's friend of a friend's nickname.

0
Zanti Misfit | 16 August 2011 - 11:13pm

Excellent song but don't play them this

MIDNIGHT BUS
(John D. Loudermilk)

Me and my baby, we got on the midnight bus
Pulled out of Durham and left in a cloud of dust
Headed for the border of North and South Caroline
This time tomorrow she'll be mine

After we had ridden for a while on the midnight bus
We fell out and had an awful fuss
Said goodbye, I pulled the buzzer chord
I got off and the driver slammed the door

Standin' in the highway, holdin' my suitcase tight
Watching that midnight bus pull out of sight
She's gone, my baby's gone and I'm alone

Left and lost my baby on the midnight bus
Left and lost my baby on the midnight bus
She's gone, my baby's gone and I'm alone
