Latitude
Posted by busker_du on 10 July 2009 - 1:13pm.
Not sure whether it's because it's seen as a bit too middle class or whether it's because a rival publication sponsors one of the stages, but I've seen no mention of Latitude on the blog.
Interesting line up this year. Anyone going and, if so, which acts are they looking forward to most?
I'll open the bidding with:
Phoenix
!!!
Datarock
The Vaselines
Amazing Baby
and, inevitably, The Passion Pit

I'm going
and i'm really looking forward to it:
Never seen the Pet Shop boys or squeeze so eager to seem them, love Nick cave & the Doves.
seen some lesser names on the smaller tents that look good the handclap band, I also love the poetry tents etc
which leads me to a plug: My good friend Pete Brown(& Word subscriber) is reading on friday from his new book about taking a barrel of IPA to India by sea "Hops and Glory". The books excellent and I'm not just saying this because he's mate the London review of books like it. So if you fancy a change come along he's getting quite good at this "Reading" lark.
(ps. all music festivals are middle class that's why they so good!)
If they do the show they did at the O2
then Pet Shop Boys alone will make it worth the price of admission.
But the great thing about festivals is usually those acts that you've never heard of, but who you stumble upon by chance. I will never forget my chance encounter with The Forest Hillbillies at Glastonbury back in the mists of time.
I'm going :-)
...but only on the Saturday (which is surely the day with the weakest line-up).
So I'm looking forward to: Scott Matthews, Camera Obscura, Maps and Passion Pit.
Not sure about Grace Jones though!
If I had the money to go to one day of a festival this year
I'd probably pick one with Grace Jones on the bill. Judging by the recent telly appearances, she's still in fine form, though I'll admit not everyone's cup of tea. However, I'd certainly pay to go to see her in all her quirkiness, as she's a born performer, whereas I'd demand substantial compensation if forced to witness one of Madonna's ego-and-control-freakery indulgences.
I thought I try to roll by
when she's on just to see what her shows like. One of the good thing about festivals you try before you buy!
I'll be there
Seen quite a few of the bands recently (Petties, Doves, Nick Cave, Gaslight Anthem, Magazine) but that won't stop me seeing them again.
Add Tricky, Squeeze, Pretenders, Thom Yorke to that list and I'll be happy.
And then perm in a few unheard (by me) bands like Duckworth Lewis, Mummers, Bombay Bicycle Club....
...and I think the makings of a super weekend are there!
Me too
Going for the third time and can't wait. Biggest draw for me is Pet Shop Boys, but beyond that I'd say Regina Spektor, Thom Yorke, Duckworth Lewis, Scott Matthews, Squeeze and Gurrumul are big draws. Ooh - and I just noticed Tricky is there too. That said, I rarely end up seeing what I intended to see, sacrificing all time favourites for something spectacularly random in the Poetry tent. that's what it's all about really.
All festies are middle class, but this is middle-classier. I struggled with it for a bit, before realising that it's what makes it even better. One of the best things about it is that it suffers from none of the littler you get at most places - the returnable beer-glasses have turned it into something quite unique, a clean festival. hurrah.
Got my ticket
I actually think its a stronger line up than glasto for smaller bands (and yes, I went to glasto too so I'm allowed to say that).
I'm particularly excited about Magazine, St.Vincent, Camera Obscura, Speech Debelle, Doves and Of Montreal.
Unlike most other festivals I have a really NICE weekend at Latitude. At Glasto I'm either deliriously happy or desperatley miserable, there's never a middle ground. Whereas with Latitude everything is always so....nice! I'm always just, kind of, satisfied. But at least I don't have the heavy low points, which can be a killer.
Curses
I'd already committed to Cornbury before I saw this line-up.
Infinitely better. For me The Mummers, The Broken Family Band, Doves and Grace Jones would have been enough to part with the hard earned.
Magazine
Will hopefully follow the House of Love last year as being an unexpectedly-good blast from the past.
We go because it's close to Norwich, but otherwise I think I'd get severely hacked off by the large numbers of middle-class serial breeders and older offspring from other posh families - well, the likes of Southwold and Walberswick aren't that far away, after all.
Still, interesting to see from other posts that it won't just be me not making a beeline to see Thom Yorke.
Two more ...
If you've never seen them, I'd also recommend both Spiritualised and Wild Beasts. If you haven't heard the latter, I guess that they're a modern day Associates.
