Landon Donovan ruined my weekend!

Merv's picture

Damn his eyes! Until that goal went in, I was looking forward to a winnable next game against Ghana with a not-too-unreasonable 6.30am start on Sunday morning (NZ time). Now, we've got Germany at 2am on Monday morning and I just KNOW that if I get up for it, it'll be the usual story of brief hope and an eventual exit on penalties, but if I don't it will probably be the best England WC performance in a generation!

I can at least record it on the Sky box and watch it in the morning, but then I won't know whether I need to get up 90 minutes early for work or two hours plus!

Should I get up for it? It'd be nice to see it live and the eternal optimist in me is trying to press the argument that England might actually perform better against a team that won't regard a draw with them as one of the best results in their history. I'd be gutted to miss what would be a fine win (however it might be achieved), but equally gutted to give up 2 and half hours sleep for a wimpering surrender.

Go on!

England usually play better against decent sides, so you might enjoy this more than you would have a nervy 1-0 against the Ghanaians. Slightly better news - if we get through that, it's Argentina or Mexico at 3pm (2 am your time) the Saturday (Sunday) after...

Disaster!

I have allowed myself to get roped into the village Tug-of-War competition on Sunday (yes I do live in Ambridge, thank you very much).

I doubt I'll be the only bloke there trying to get it all over with before kick off - so come on down if you want to see 64 burly men having a quick tug on a Sunday morning.

Captain,

Humph would've been proud of you...

I thought that this was going to be

a diatribe about a skiffle festival that went wrong and the failure of the star to perform the perennial fans' favourite 'My Old Man's a Dustman'.

Then I looked again.

Italia 1990

I was living in Sydney during Italia 90 and had to get up at 3.00 a.m. to watch us play Germany in the semi final

I remember as it went to penalties I woke my girlfriend up and said "If I've got to suffer, you've got to suffer with me"

I then had to go and do a full day's work. I was glad to be in a foreign land before the internet.

You must get up, and you must watch, it is your duty.

Get up, watch it

It could be a great day.

At least

it will wake you up properly, whatever the result!

I would

It has to be done. Once every 4 years we go through this torture. Thank you Sir may I have another.

Dammit

Now it's a toss up between watching Costello in Hyde Park (assuming he's not going to watching it backstage when he should be on stage anyway) and the England game.

You're lucky

I’ve got to go to the Horbury & Ossett Conservative Association Garden Party on Sunday afternoon, whioch is neatly timed to overlap perfectly with the England match. The FPOs friend is organising it, so there’s no getting out of it. And I’d been so careful to keep Saturday evening free, too. D’oh!

I'm leaning towards the early start!

TBH, I would get up without too much thought if it wasn't for the fact that we have an 11-week-old baby and so cannot guarantee sleep patterns - worst-case scenario is that she wakes up just as the game finishes and I have to go to work on a Monday after 3 hours sleep and with nothing 'in the bank' due to the usual sleep-deprivation involved in having a newborn around!

That said, she is just starting to get into a routine now, so if she has a good weekend and the FPO lets me have my usual Saturday morning lie-in, I will probably risk it!

Work

I'll be working. This makes me upset!

Merv

Shit wasn't it?

So very very shit!

For 1 second, when I thought we'd equalised, I was pleased I'd got up for what was shaping up to be a classic. By full time I was kicking myself!
