Korla Pandit

Crowdedmouse's picture

All this talk of CW Stoneking got me to thinking about how our rock 'n' roll brothers and sisters re-invent themselves or develop a persona for the purpose of fame and fortune - Dylan, Strummer (to an extent) and Tom Waits all spring to mind. However, Korla Pandit has to be the king as far as all this is concerned. I received an advance copy of an album of Exotica from the ever reliable El records the other day and was drawn to this guy like a snake to a charm.
What I've discovered so far is fascinating (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korla_Pandit)

Here he is action:

Keep 'em coming

and keep the flame of Exotica burning brightly on the Word blog.

I had not read about his true persona before but I particularly loved this fact...

he would also provide musical accompaniment for Time for Beany, Bob Clampett's popular puppet show which featured Stan Freberg and Daws Butler as puppeteers and voices.

Have some electronic exotica back at you

"Lovesick Martian Boy" from Dana Countryman's "Moog-Tastic!"

more exotica

The exotica genre was revived in the mid-90s and we still need more Tiki bars!

Korla Pandit (ISTR who never spoke on camera) had a bit part in Tim Burton's excellent "Ed Wood" biopic.

Also recommended: Yma Sumac's "Mambo" album. Fabulous big band arrangements (by Billy May), crazy mambo rhythms (as was the trend at the time) and THAT voice.
