Kings of the Podcast

Oi Oi!!

Dear Readers of Word.

I am getting a little bit obsessed of late with listening to Iplayer (BBC) to "listen again" to various radio programs and subscribing to numerous podcasts (including the rather good Word 'cast) but, I am finding that my strike rate for turning up little gems is not as great as I would like. Indeed, I am listening to more spoken word than music of late, something which to me, suggests that senility and not being able to leave the house without a "trannie" are but a short stroll away..

I subscribe to the magnificent Speechification, but am wondering if any of you kind souls could point me in the direction of some really damn fine podcasts that would interest a portly man of 35, with interests in the following things; Fine Music (of course), film, beer, history, chat, drama - pretty much anything that is firmly of the "Anti drive time" slant.

Your suggestions would be really appreciated.

podcasts etc

there was something about favourite podcasts on here just before Christmas which might be worth going through.
Im an illustrator (when Im not doing my full time job which, unlike illustrating, pays the bills ) and find myself listening to more and more spoken word/ magazine type programmes via podcasts when Im drawing and have listed below my particular faves....
1. This American Life - There's a theme to each episode, and a variety of stories on that theme. It's mostly true stories of everyday people, though not always.
2. Sound Opinions - a magazine style programme that offers reviews, music industry news and, quite often, live sessions. I love this show / podcast and although I dont always agree with their opinions on certain artists its a great listen.
3. Moth Podcast - short stories - always entertaining and a favourite of lots of Word readers it seems.
4.Too Beautiful to Live - Seattle based radio show that puts up two three hour shows in hour chunks as podcasts. I cant remember how I came to stumble upon this show ( I think it was name checked on This American Life) but Im a regular listener now. They tackle all kinds of subjects and Ive found it to be a strangely addicitive listen.
All of these podcasts are available on I tunes and Im sure they can be streamed from their relevant websites as well.
Happy listening!!

Unmissable podcasts

Stephen Fry's Podgram - Random ramblings about language and the world in general

The Tone Generation - The history of electronic music in an ongoing series of podcasts

Radio 4's In Our Time - Experts discuss a seemingly random subject with Melvyn Bragg as 'Joe Public' keeping them on track and clarifying things. It's taught me more than school ever did!

Seconded

Fry's recent one called 'Language' is extremely good.

Also worth a listen..

..is The Daily Mayo from Simon Mayo's Five Live show. Perfect little 30-40 minute interviews from a variety of fields. And if today's guest doesn't appeal there'll be another one along tomorrow.Having said that I have found myself listening to some editions which at first glance did not appeal and having my opinions changed.
Would agre with Stephen Fry and In Our Time.
And in a similar vein Philosophy Bites is good if you fancy something a bit mind stretching but in short bursts.

Cheers

for these suggestions, will be sure to try them all. For myself, I highly recommened R4 "Ramblings" - A show about Ramblers - No hang on, it is really quite insightful...
