King Williams College Quiz

chrisf's picture

I've only just got round to looking at this years King Williams College quiz - that impossibly hard quiz that is published in the Guardian each Christmas.

Anyway, one of the sections this year is on musicians....

Which musician might have been:
1. inSW3?
2. a mongrel?
3. an ottoman?
4. a hurried exit?
5. a plumbous abdomen?
6. more specifically, Atropos?
7. emulsified by bile?
8. a fit of pique?
9. coniferous?
10. lignified?

I've got #5 - Ledbelly (plumbous - lead, abdomen = belly) and I'm thinking #10 may be Woody Guthrie (lignified = make hard like wood).

Struggling on the rest - the Massive are a smart lot, I'm sure we can crack them.....

The whole quiz can be found here...

Isn't Franz Ferdinand

the Ottoman?

0

He was a Hapsburg. Pay attention at the back!

0
poolhallrichard | 20 January 2011 - 12:41pm

9. coniferous?

Courtney Pine?

0
Fraser M | 20 January 2011 - 10:23am

Psychadelic Firs?

Lard | 20 January 2011 - 1:43pm

0
Chris G | 20 January 2011 - 1:56pm

Back of the net!

He shoots he scores!

0
Lard | 2 February 2011 - 10:22am

Number 1

SW3 is Chelsea, which suggests Elvis Costello

0
Gatz | 20 January 2011 - 10:50am

Chelsea

But EC didn't want to go to Chelsea so I'm not sure it's him. Maybe it's Leonard Cohen they're looking for, in the Chelsea Hotel?

0
Red Umpire | 20 January 2011 - 10:58am

Courtney Love?

SW3 is Wimbledon isn't it? EDIT - No. I am wrong. Sorry :)

0
katyg | 20 January 2011 - 11:20am

Chelsea

The punk rock band of the same name?

0
Beany | 20 January 2011 - 12:08pm

therefore

maybe Gene October who was in Chelsea? Calling him a musician is a bit of a stretch though...

0
Lard | 20 January 2011 - 1:46pm

Or Joni mitchell

When she woke up it was a Chelsea Morning

0
illuminatus | 20 January 2011 - 1:06pm
stimpy | 27 January 2011 - 9:31pm

7

could be Fat boy slim (bile immulusifies fat I believe) that or another Fat blues mans etc.

0
Chris G | 20 January 2011 - 10:55am

Fats Waller

maybe?

0
Lard | 20 January 2011 - 1:48pm

chubby checker?

0
Chris G | 20 January 2011 - 1:57pm

Atropos

was one of the Fates in Greek mythology. She was the one who cut the thread with shears so guessing it could be Scissor Sisters, although a group rather than a musician.

I'd like to think that coniferous was Green, but that is only because I like to crowbar Scritti Politti into every conversation I have if possible.

0
JoLean | 20 January 2011 - 10:59am

George Harrison?

The only guess I could come up with was George Harrison, because of his album "Gone Troppo". Your answer sounds more likely though.

0
kidpresentable | 20 January 2011 - 1:47pm

4 is possibly Paul

either Simon (50 ways to leave your lover)

McCartney via wings band on the run.

0
Chris G | 20 January 2011 - 11:00am

8

Just thought that no 8 could be Tinie Tempah (Tiny temper?)? Perhaps. Grasping at straws?

1
JoLean | 20 January 2011 - 11:10am

no that's it

was thinking to be fair to the students they would have included some younger artists as well.

0
Chris G | 20 January 2011 - 11:11am

...

1. inSW3? - Nico (Chelsea Girl)

4. a hurried exit? - Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers

10. lignified? Woody someone - Guthrie? or the one from the Bay City Rollers ... edit: Woody Woodmansey

1
Glenbervie | 20 January 2011 - 11:37am

double post

apologies

0
Glenbervie | 20 January 2011 - 11:35am

2. I can only

think of Snoop Dogg but that's a bit weak

0
Chris G | 20 January 2011 - 11:31am

Hound Dog Taylor

Was my thought on this one, but I'm not too sure...

0
chrisf | 20 January 2011 - 11:55am

No. 10

Which musician might have been lignified?

lignify
make rigid and woody by the deposition of lignin in cell walls.

Soft Cell?

0
Uncle Sil | 20 January 2011 - 11:46am

or maybe Ron or Roy Wood

0
Chris G | 20 January 2011 - 11:49am

Get ready for the answers...

The answers to last years quiz were published in The Guardian on 22 January 2010.

Looks like we've only got a day or two to crack it.

Bet there's someone from the college reading this and pissing themselves.

0
Uncle Sil | 20 January 2011 - 12:09pm

We used to have

a mongrel called Prince.
Serious attempt at an answer: Backyard Dog?

0
STD | 20 January 2011 - 12:40pm

Mongrel

Didn't some people call them Heinz 57s?

So, Heinz (singing along to Just Like Eddie)

0
illuminatus | 20 January 2011 - 1:04pm

7

Pearl jam?

0
illuminatus | 20 January 2011 - 1:16pm

6, Atropos:

This Mortal Coil?

0
Hippo | 20 January 2011 - 2:34pm

Atropos

was known as the 'inflexible one'

An inflexible one could be described as adamant. Adam Ant.

My brain hurts now.

0
Helena Handcart | 20 January 2011 - 2:43pm

Stiff Little Fingers?

0
Seamus | 20 January 2011 - 3:06pm

A stab at these...

1. Leonard Cohen
2. Christopher Cross
3. Prince
4. Flea
5. Leadbelly
6. George Shearing
7. Fats Waller
8. Sting
9. Al Green
10. Woody Herman

0
Baskerville Old Face | 20 January 2011 - 2:44pm

No 2

Think there's agreement on 4.
Suspect we already have the right answer for 8.

0
STD | 20 January 2011 - 4:22pm

genius me

3) Mark Knopfler aka SULTAN of swing

0
STD | 24 January 2011 - 7:51am

Thanks!

:)

0
STD | 24 January 2011 - 8:33am

My stabs

2. Nigel Blacknell (AKA Half Man, Half Biscuit)
4. Phil Collins (Hello, I must be going!)?
5. (definitely) Leadbelly
6. Ana Matronic (Atropos was the sister with the scissors, ergo...)

0
Austin | 24 January 2011 - 8:43am

The sheer number of spot on yet

contradictory answers here has me worried about a 3-2-1 scenario*.
(*Ted Rogers' extraordinary ability to conjour an unexpected answer from an obvious clue - as brilliantly sent up recently by a contributor on another thread: The clue says "drive away" - well that could be the car
Then it says "you'll be moving up a gear" - that could be the car
Finally it says "this is the car". What is it? Oh, how unlucky it's Dusty Bin!

1
STD | 25 January 2011 - 9:02am

Answers !

The answers have just been published.......

1. Chelsea Quealey
2. Mutt Carey
3. Turk Murphy
4. Bunk Johnson
5. Huddie Ledbetter – 'Lead Belly'
6. Fate Marable
7. Fats Waller (or Fats Sardi)
8. Miff Mole
9. Pinetop Smith or Pinetop Perkins
10. Woody Herman

With the exception of the Leadbelly one, I'm not sure I'm any wiser after seeing the answer...

Full answers here....
http://www.kwc.im/documents/2-GKPA2010-11.pdf

0
chrisf | 27 January 2011 - 4:26pm

Four

I have heard of four of those people.

Although we were rubbish, my life is enhanced knowing that someone called Miff Mole exists/existed.

It really is 3-2-1 land this as STD said, isn't it?

0
JoLean | 27 January 2011 - 4:30pm

Indeed

I think I managed 5 that I'd heard of....

I looked up Miff Mole on Wikipedia - generally considered one of the greatest Jazz trombonists. Died in 1961. We learn something everyday....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miff_Mole

0
chrisf | 27 January 2011 - 4:37pm

I got 3...

Miff Mole (1898-1961) was a jazz trombonist and band leader. Never heard of him until now. I am an ignoramus and must learn more.

0
Baskerville Old Face | 27 January 2011 - 4:36pm

Boo! Rubbish!

The compiler is obviously into New Orleans Jazz from 80-odd years ago.
Perhaps the kids at the college know this fact and can bone up accordingly.

1
Austin | 27 January 2011 - 9:28pm

Remember, the KWQ isn't an unseen

The kids are given it before the Christmas holidays and can research the answers before taking the test in the New Year.

When I was at school (through the 60s) we used to have a master who liked to test us with selections from the KWQ when it was published in the Grauniad.

0
stimpy | 31 January 2011 - 12:18pm

The missing clue: answers are a bit genre specific

The poster who guessed Tinie Tempah must feel particularly shortchanged. Can we check whether Ted Rogers was involved in any way?

1
STD | 27 January 2011 - 4:33pm

Spods!

Blimey, the kids at that school must be a bit spoddy...

0
Red Umpire | 27 January 2011 - 4:41pm

Whoever said...

... Flea for number 4 provided a better answer than the real one. And surely any 'Woody' would be acceptable for no. 10? And for that matter Fats Domino would work for no. 7.

0
Billybob Dylan | 27 January 2011 - 9:44pm

Well the so called real answer are

frankly bollocks and don't fit the clues any better than our answers and could only be found by chance. I always thought this quiz was designed to flatter the vanity of the setter(s) rather than enlighten the quizees.

1
Chris G | 27 January 2011 - 11:35pm

It's not the winning, it's the taking part...

Grapes. Sour. Bunch. For the use of.

Our mistake was thinking this a modern, forward-looking quiz rather than the old-fashioned thing it turned out to be. I wonder how many of the kids at that school have actually listened to any of these artists. They probably think Woody Herman played for the Bay City Rollers (and they are, I expect, just as relevant to the kids as Miff Mole)

0
Baskerville Old Face | 28 January 2011 - 12:53am

After 40 years

of listening to and reading voraciously about music, I've heard of precisely four of those musicians. Well, that's me put in my place. As the young people would no doubt write, ROFLMAO.

0
Hippo | 31 January 2011 - 12:11pm

Five here...

0
stimpy | 31 January 2011 - 12:13pm

Three here.

Leadbelly, Fats and Woody. That's "heard of", not "got the answers". I obviously didn't get a single one of them. Seriously, that quiz is shit: as Chris says, it's clearly providing the setters with a smug chuckle or two, but no-one has a realistic shot at getting it right.

We should institute a Massive Standard for pop music quizzes: if it can't realistically be answered, in full, on this blog, it's unnecessarily obscure. We could have a kitemark or something.

0
Bob | 31 January 2011 - 12:21pm

The answers to our quiz would probably look something like...

1. Fat Mattress
2. 200 Motels
3. Dumpy's Rusty Nuts
4. 1956
5. The Number Of The Beast
6. Electric Eden
7. Mabel Greer's Toyshop
8. a)Bob Dylan; (b)The Band
9. Dr. Feelgood
10. Pyongyang.

Maybe someone can now come up with the questions?

those real answers are total BS.Who set the quiz ? Steve Race on My Music. Those answers seem to be from the Musical equvilant of "Ask the Family".
Brilliant observation on Ted Rodgers though. The massive never disappoint.
