Kim Richey

Twangothan's picture

If there are any other Kim Richey fans out there you may have missed that she's playing two dates in the UK in May - Glasgow and Leicester - I'm not aware of any others.

I've seen her a few times as support, once in a tiny venue in Paris - she was booked to play the small venue next door and the proprietor, with magnificant Parisien indifference, decided "pas le peine" to open his premises to the small number of ticket holders, so we all repaired next door to a tiny art gallery, arrange 25 chairs, and Kim played totally acoustically - no mic, just an acoustic guitar - and quite beautifully for 2 hours, with a short break in the middle when someone nipped down to the corner shop for a few tins. The we all had a natter with Kim after the "show". What a night.

For those not in the know she is a songwriter to many country stars, but her own stuff is quite intimate, singer songwritery folk/country material, delivered with a voice far too pure and tuneful to be popular.

Question - how come Word hasn't reviewed her new album/ Kate?

I believe the album was out

I believe the album was out last year, innit? In 'the fall'. She's a good one. Too tuneful to be popular? Never!

Well, new to me

I wasn't aware of it - but then I get me news mainly from Word and if you mentioned it I didn't spot it! Mind you, she is hardly mainstream!

Hopefully she's whittling

Hopefully she's whittling away on another one as we type!

Book early, they need the money, I believe she turned down the 'door split' deal....

Ta loads

Ta for that - much nearer than Leicester for me! Looks like an interesting venue!

Skirky, you are a gent for

posting the details of this gig, but I must defend Ms. Richey's honour re. the door split - she and her agent have presented a very acceptable deal to our fledgling venue. I can't wait, I've always wanted to see her play and now I've booked her meself. :-)

You are a fine fellow

Am even as I type awaiting response from Essex mate as to whether he wants to go! I applaud your booking policy. I book the bands for my local pub music night - Word rules forbid me saying which one - but I doubt even Kim would do it for the magnificant 30 quid the landlord pays. My first gig I got 25 quid in 1976 when a pint was, oooh, 20p? Go figure.

Word Rules

Self-promotion and self-linking in a new post is frowned upon, but it's fine in a response, as long as it's relevant to the conversation, if you see what I mean.

What's the venue?

Portland Arms - St. Albans

Cheers Fraser. It is the Portland Arms - in St. Albans - every Sunday night. My booking policy is no backing tracks, drum machines etc - mostly (but not exclusively) acoustic based - original numbers encouraged, guest spots feature frequently, and there are generally floor spots. Friendly pub, excellent Fullers beer, nice wine, good grub. We raised 200 quid for Crisis at Christmas in a December charity gig of 6 acts playing for nothing......I'd better stop....I play there regularly - in return for organising I get a (as in one) pint per gig! And of course the ability to book myself regularly!

See you all there!

I stand (gently) admonished.

All back to yours afterwards is it James?

skirky | 6 March 2008 - 6:25pm

Mmmm......

Well of course in my dreams, after the show we retire to the snug with some beer and a couple of guitars and me 'n' K stay up 'til 5am writing songs. Then in the morning we arrange the studio time in the summer to get the final versions finished off before release on Rykodisc in Spring 2009, supported by a 50 date coast-to-coast US tour. Obviously we'll let you play guitar on a couple as well Skirky.

But I imagine we'll all actually be quite tired and probably just go to bed.

When and where is the Leicester gig? Quite fancy a day out.

A very fine artist

Kim is a big favourite with Mrs P and myself. We spoke to her in the intermission last year, when she was supporting John Hiatt, at The Barbican and she is very modest and unassuming about her talents.
Hopefully she'll have a band when she tours, but I suspect not as three of the four times we've seen her, she's been solo.
Even so, if you haven't seen her try and catch her. She is very underrated in this country, but deserving of more than a niche audience.
The last album Chinese Boxes was pretty good. Bitter Sweet is better while Glimmer has some really good songs but the production is a bit over polished.
BTW Twang, I'm very jealous hearing about your Paris gig.

Yeah it was fantastic

I took the CD booklet along for her to sign and she wrote "Wasn't this a blast"! I didn't say, but Kim got stuck in carting the chairs and tables about too - I wonder how Morrissey would have reacted?

She was ssaying she had supported Richard Thompson and they did a few numbers together - now that I would have liked to see!

I was a bit disappointed with the Bill Bottrell produced one - he tries to make everyone sound like Sheryl Crow - about half of it I really like and half I can leave. Anyone who doesn't feel the sun come out when listening to "Here I go again" off the first album is probably clinically dead anyway.

New to Me

But sounds wonderful. Her website doesn't seem to be up to date, though. Any details of Glasgow gig?

You won't be disappointed!

26th of May at the Brel Bar apparently. Check Ent24.co.uk.

Me and Mrs. Twang booked for Bedford at the weekend.
