Kelly Groucutt 1945-2009

Seemed to go unnoticed in these parts, so thought I'd post this link from Andrew Collins' blog :

Sad death of ELO's Kelly Groucutt last week.

RIP

As Andrew says, he was in the classic line up and his passing did make me think about the band's glory years as they probably were the first band I "properly" got into.

I think that Rockaria from A New World Record also featured Kelly's falsetto.

My brother got me into ELO at the height of punk. It is possible to like both and there is nothing wrong with that. We kept a chart of the progress of ELO singles - and they seemed to consistently stall at No 6. This was pre-Xanadu, of course.

Very sad.

ELO were the first group that mattered to me. This is awful news. Bless him, and deepest sympathy to friends and family.

Kelly

Like so many people of a certain age, ELO were the first band I really got into, and still will defend liking their music (whilst at the same time realizing how ridiculous they were). I read this last week but didn't post here because of the polarizing effect of all things related to Jeff Lynne.

Michael "Kelly" Groucutt was good bass player, great harmony singer, and the only member of ELO to really make an effort on stage. It's a shame how things went for him after the falling out with Jeff Lynne over royalties/wages and so on, something he bitterly regretted in later life apparently.
