Ah well. Good innings and all that.

Sad

A good innings indeed - "Billy Liar" was really important to me in my youth.

A kindred spirit

"I wake up with views the way some people wake up with hangovers. (Sometimes I wake up with both, when the confederation of clowns presiding over our destinies had better tread carefully.)"

A good writer. A loss.

I wish I'd said that.

An inspiration

I used to read his Daily Mirror columns when I was in my teens, and began to appreciate the pleasure in good writing. It was the first thing that made me think seriously about a career .... I've now been in jounalism for 25 years.

Seconded

Back when I penned a mediocre column for the local rag, his collected Mirror columns were my saviour when I was bereft of inspiration. Erm, I didn't copy 'em though, honest.

Sadly, his latest works for the Mail when he was a Gerry's Club habitue were too vinegary and downright bitter for my tastes. A shame as he was a terrific writer

I also remember

The Mirror columns from the 70's with affection. Those and Marje Proops made the paper worth buying in those days. Billy Liar really was immense fun and that alone should reserve him a place in the nations history.
