Kate & Mike Introduce the September Issue of THE WORD
Ignoring fits of giggles and a collapsing set, Kate Mossman and the honey-voiced "Seventies" Mike Johnson (back by very popular demand), return once again to guide you through the literary feast contained within the new edition of The Word.
Other delicacies include rare pictures of The Cure, a night out with Tim Westwood, Rhona Cameron, Damon Albarn's Monkey, the Best and Worst sequels ever, the history of jokes, Tom Waits, Brian Wilson, John Sessions, Shane Meadows, Fleet Foxes, Alan Vega, Maureen Lipman, Walter Becker, 23 pages of very tasty reviews, and what happens when you delete the Internet.
And that's not all! Featured on this month's free CD are Roots Manuva, Ry Cooder, Randy Newman, Manu Chao, Teddy Thompson, Horace Silver, and many, many more.
You've no reason not to subscribe.

Is it just me?
Is it just me or is 70s Mike Johnson possibly the younger leaner brother of Top Gears James May? And Kate Mossman.....ummmmm, brains and hottie rolled into one (I hope thats not too letchy).
Did I hear correct that the podcast is off for 4 week holiday? I'd love to hear Johnson, Mossman et al take over the format whilst Hepworths off on teacher training.
You did hear correctly.
I'll see if the equipment can be hi-jacked.
Great!
We promise not to tell when they come back
Yes please

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!
This I just have to say........
Teddy Thompson is bloody marvellous! Yes, I know who his Dad is. And Mum, too, being a fully paid up enthusiast of both, separately and collectively. I have Teddys 2nd and his country covers, as well as assorted Brokeback and Cohen cover odds and ends. As such, I would be normally wary of the 4th LP, but the track on the coverdisc is just so darn good, best singer we have produced for yonks, if I may take credit on behalf of the UK. Money will be spent.......
Here lies the beginning
of referneces to TT as well as RT
I promoted one of his first ever gigs...
at the 12 Bar Club in London some years ago. He was fabulous. My night was made even more special by the fact that as I was DJing and segueing from a Nick Drake song into one by Sandy Denny, Joe Boyd and Linda Thompson came up and congratulated me on my excellent taste in music! I was grinning from ear to ear for the rest of the evening...
Thanks for reading........
More bloody advertorial this month, chaps, I see. The Sony gigabox or whatever it is. Is this going to be a staple? I await the Word approved nutricious and tasty chicken textured snacks with some anticipation.......
It might be...
...a magazine that's enjoyed by many, but goodwill alone won't keep it afloat.
You're right about Teddy Thompson though. Standout track on the CD by a country mile.
14th September and still
no sign of the slow boat to Belfast with this month's edition. I'm sure this is contrary to human rights legislation.
Well mine dropped on my doormat
in Belfast on the 11th!
No sign...
... of it in Wexford either (although it's only August here).
OOPS
We use a mystical Celtic system of time recording, or it was a late night or I was trying to drive home the point, or ... oh well, it's been a long week.
Shurely shome mishtake.......
It was September last time I was in Ireland. September 1963. Last march.
Another slur ...?
Do you mean 'last March'? Or 'last march'? If the latter it may have been September 1690
Double duty at the punk barricades
Fans of the Alarm and/or Stiff Little Fingers may scoff at this, but...

Hang on, it's the same person! Wikipedia tells me his name is Steve Grantley, drummer.
Do I win a prize, or just sympathy for being the kind of person who might notice such a tiny detail?
That is brilliant
None of us had noticed.
Nicodemus, it's great to see
Nicodemus, it's great to see someone from my hometown of Wexford with a great taste in magazines!
I am sitting here in Clonmel in Tipperary for the second month in a row considering popping down to the newsagents to buy a copy because the subscription copy hasn't arrived.
On a positive note though, I contacted Word last month about my missing magazine and Nicole Shilling sorted me out with a new copy.
Many thanks Nicole!
I'm actually in...
... Enniscorthy, Brian.
Last month's copy landed in my hall on the 16th. So I'm hoping for delivery Monday/Tuesday.
A bit annoying, seeing as it's already in my local newsagent's though!
Ah right, Enniscorthy! My
Ah right, Enniscorthy!
My subscription copy never arrived at all. Saying that, my postman has been humming that Little Feat song from the CD and winking at me........
When is the...
subscriber copy supposed to arrive in Ireland? I'm in Cork and haven't got mine. I'm also considering just going to newsagent to get it!
Irish Deliveries
DHL picked up the copies for Irish delivery on Friday 8 August, so they may not have actually been posted to the 11th (Monday). Expected transit time to addresses in Ireland is 3-5 working days, so subscribers should have received their copies by the end of last week.
If anyone still hasn't received their copies by the end of the day, drop Jerry an e-mail.
Thanks, Fraser...
... my copy arrived this morning.
And I'm not back to work 'til Friday.
Tops!
DHL huh?
I'm a bit surprised that these are delivered by DHL to be honest. Why, well, when I received the issue with Thom Yorke on the cover I was somewhat disgruntled to discover that the CD was nowhere to be seen as the packaging was ripped. I put it down to our wonderful postal system...but DHL.
I have also considered getting a coy in the newsagents as the delay on getting them through the post is a bit irritating but then again I don't think any newsagent in Wicklow carries 'The Word'.
The 19th and all quiet on the Spanish front
Mumblo grumblo....
Hippo Hippo Hurrayo!
Gotcha.
Mine was....
delivered this morning, so wine and a comfy chair beckon!
did anyone get to....
visit the site that Rob Fitzpatrick mentioned in the 'Home Service' column, 78records.cdbpdx.com? I've tried a few times but just get a '404' error! It sounded like a great site!
it's back up now
but it's a listing only - not downloads :(
Just been on..
and there was one song for download, and he's trying to set up streaming for the rest, so that'll be cool! Thanks for the heads up!
The site is...
now offering 10 downloads at a time, and you can request which ones you'd like!
What I learned
The life of a fan club membership is short, intense and unlikely to survive the seven year itch.
When I get a new copy of WORD the first thing I do is flick through the magazine and read the picture captions. The Star Wars-themed Stereolab caption and the somewhat below the belt caption accompanying Mark Ellen's review of Leviathan - or, the whale are fine examples of this often overlooked editorial folk art.
