Kate Bush

Pat Carty's picture

it pains me to say it, but this is not very good at all.

1

Yeah its terrible

Robbie Coltrane was good in 'Cracker', wha'happen?

DogFacedBoy | 26 April 2011 - 12:17am

Reminds me of

that rotten Comic Strip episode she was involved with.

I assumed she directed this herself? It's new? Why is it so mired in the 80's? The tunes a stinker, too.

0
Grant | 26 April 2011 - 12:35am

The song is from 1989

but is rerecorded for this new Directors Cut thing.

I like Kate Bush but this is bobbins isn't it?

0
Dr Volume | 26 April 2011 - 1:18am

It doesn't bode well for the album

but as Kate herself said in MOJO - the original tunes are there if you want them. They won't cease to exist when the new album comes out.

Think it will be a curiosity more than anything else. The original version of Sensual World with the Joyce lyrics for example

DogFacedBoy | 26 April 2011 - 1:39am

Kate Bush...

.... was always overrated.

Nicodemus | 26 April 2011 - 1:15am

On behalf of Patrick Crowther

I'll see you outside in five minutes...

I'm a huge fan but I am inclined to agree with you, if I'm honest. I think our expectations have been raised to the point where they can't be met any more.

bassclef (not verified) | 29 April 2011 - 11:55am

I liked the original

I wonder what her motive is for doing this stuff again. Releasing one album in 18 years cannot completely pay the mortgage. She gets no money from playing live (which is her contemporaries main source of income). I would imagine performance royalties are high from at least two songs, Wuthering heights and Running up that hill, but maybe not what they were.

I doubt her back catalogue sells in massive numbers. Maybe some of her investments failed and that writer's block is not getting any easier ...

0
dai | 26 April 2011 - 6:25am

On the contrary

Maybe she's so comfortable that she can afford to do whatever she feels like without worrying about whether it sells or not?

1
skirky | 26 April 2011 - 6:47am

But is she?

Given what I wrote above. I believe some rock stars actually earn much less than what we may assume.

Huge mansions, servants and school fees can be quite a drain on one's finances I find.

0
dai | 26 April 2011 - 7:32am

Apparently...

...she's struck an innovative royalties deal which gives her a pound everytime a member of the Massive drools over the mere mention of her name.

7
File-Under-Water | 26 April 2011 - 9:16am

Given the sheer numbers of records sold....

...in the "peak" years of CD sales, especially The Hounds of Love and The Whole Story and that she is, in the main, the sole songwriting and publishing beneficiary, I'd assume she's not quite on the breadline yet...

Not to mention the royalties on secondary use of Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting etc etc...the mortgage must be long paid.

Six Dog | 26 April 2011 - 11:04am
stimpy | 26 April 2011 - 11:16am

I always thought she did....

favour Gilmour did with EMI. Of course, I could be hopelessly misinformed!

0
Six Dog | 26 April 2011 - 12:00pm

She own her master tapes

and is a pretty canny business lady. Can't remember the publishing situation - I'll ask Mr biographer on Twitter

Plus she hasn't got servants, hangers on, the lifestyle and all the usual rock star trappings apart from the big farmhousee with CCTV and no fly zone.

0
DogFacedBoy | 26 April 2011 - 12:06pm

Restraining orders

Don't come cheap. Allegedly.

I still don't know how I found my way into her bedroom. I tried to fight her off but gave in after a few seconds.

1
Beany | 26 April 2011 - 2:23pm

'Wuthering Heights'

was good.

0
eddie g | 26 April 2011 - 9:27am

Which one?

The original or the one with missed high note on The Whole Story?

0
Beany | 26 April 2011 - 10:44am

I only know

the single version.

Thinking about it though, I did rather like bits of the 'Hounds of Love' album too. That much-anticipated 'Ariel' set was poor though wasn't it?

0
eddie g | 26 April 2011 - 12:03pm

Aeriel

is genius, especially disk 2, her finest work.

7
Pat Carty | 26 April 2011 - 12:51pm

I never made it

to disc two I'm afraid.

0
eddie g | 26 April 2011 - 2:52pm

No it wasn't....

I'm sure that we've been through this before....

woodzmeister | 27 April 2011 - 7:55pm

From disc 2 of Aerial, for your consideration

No apologies for posting this clip again. It's Nocturn. Every time I hear this I love it more. I think it's on its way to becoming a desert island disc for me. So sparse - mostly just very simple, spare drums, stellar bass playing, a few keyboard garnishes, and her beautiful voice. It builds slowly, inexorably. And what a groove! It takes a while to get going though, so give it a chance.

0
Rosbif | 28 April 2011 - 3:07pm

Thanks for that Rosbif.

Our widely differing musical tastes is what makes this place so much fun. See, I thought this was terrible. But, who knows, you may well think that the latest New York Dolls album ( which I love and reckon is better than their old stuff even )is pants. All part of the Word carousel of controversy and wonder.

1
eddie g | 28 April 2011 - 3:15pm

I like oysters and snails

Aeriel and Dancing Backwards in High Heels are both great

0
Pat Carty | 28 April 2011 - 8:30pm

Just makes it

all the more controversial and wonderful I guess.

0
eddie g | 29 April 2011 - 11:39am

I Must Be Alone

I quite liked the song and the video, not Kate at her peak, but better than I expected

1
MrRadio | 26 April 2011 - 12:17pm

La Bush

I like...

- some of the early singles
- the whole of "Hounds of Love"
- some bits of "The Dreaming"
- the second disc of "Aerial" (very fine indeed)

I certainly won't be bothering with "The Director's Cut", or whatever it's called.

Mind you, Massivers, I think we should all be proud of ourselves: we've managed to have a Kate Bush thread without anyone posting THAT photo by Gered Mankowitz.

0
duco01 | 26 April 2011 - 3:07pm

I give it ten more minutes...

..nine, eight, seven...

1
Six Dog | 26 April 2011 - 3:34pm

THAT Kate Bush Photo

Wouldn't mind just having a peek at it though .... just for a second.....

0
Hairy_Smelly_Wet_Dog | 27 April 2011 - 12:40am

Patrick is on holiday remember

He can normally be relied on to oblige with that photo

0
Nick Duvet | 27 April 2011 - 12:52am

On behalf of Patrick once again

as he has obliged me in the past.

bassclef (not verified) | 29 April 2011 - 12:01pm

Oh dear Kate...

I adore KB and have loved just about everything she has done (sometimes with a bit of effort put in mind) but this version of a perfectly good song is like she's found a 'modernize' button on her PC.
If anything needed updating it was the lyrics which, even at the time it came out (1988?), sounded out of date.
As for the video. It seems the product of 'Why Don't You' or something (showing my age here). You've got Robbie Coltrane, that woman who's usually really good and Vince Noir. I'm sorry, I'm crap with names.

You should give CD 1 of Aerial a bit more of a go. Even if it's just to marvel at what a wonder she is and how we should treasure her being around...

Vocaloid

A cross between a vocal and a hemorrhoid

Steerpike | 4 May 2011 - 10:34pm

kate's videos

I have loved Kate's music for a long time, and eagerly awaited Aerial, which was a bit on the disappointing side, and disc 1 is the better of the two. However. Kate, at her best, has been a great artist with sound, and during the important times, late seventies, early eighties, did a lot to transform how pop music sounded, as well as giving us innovative and searching lyrics from a female song-writer. However. Sonics notwithstanding, visuals have never been her strength. Almost all of her videos have a high cringe factor; very few are at the front end of design, and the narrative videos pale very quickly. The best way to see Kate perform is when things are really pared down and she's singing with a few backing musicians and a piano. Why this thing with Coltrane should have been concoted I can't begin to compute (pun deliberate) with all its heavy-handed symbolism that a contemporary GCSE drama student would be embarrased to present ... Hope the rest of the recuts on the Director's Cut are better than this.

1
sirbedivere | 27 April 2011 - 8:18pm

Did the OP dislike the music...

...or the video? Or both?

Kb's always been a bit suspect on the video front though, hasn't she? Likes a bit of overacting, with dollops of very literal interpretation of the music.

Has she made any decent videos which she appeared in herself?

0
Fridge | 27 April 2011 - 10:22pm

Mmmm, yes

The Sensual World. I'm not sure everyone would exonerate this video from the charge of ridiculousness - but then again her utter fearlessness is one of the (many, many) qualities that I admire so much about her. She does her thing with conviction, daring us to smirk - and if we do, I'm pretty sure she doesn't give a toss.

Anyway, in this video we get to watch Kate, moving, a a sensual way. That's enough for me. I'd be happy if it were just a clip of her sitting reading a book, turning the pages occasionally.
