Just Stop it. Now.

Iainso's picture

I happened upon the once marvellous Top Gear last night, and was moved to share my opinions with you lot.

It is a terrible show. I used to laugh, but now I cringe.

The tin hat was put on last night in the frankly ridiculous "race" across Tokyo.

Feel the tension mount as the editing suite does its work to artificially make it look close.

Feel yourself want to punch the telly in, as Jeremy "just" wins. Again.

Feel yourself hit the Planner button on Sky + to watch something else.

No more, no more.

I think your attempt to nudge

this particular Tv super tanker of course maybe in vain, once they start producing top trump cards for tv show it has got so much momemtum it's unstoppable. People in countries where it's not even shown watch pirate copies of clarkson and the boys I saw the other day. I'm afraid this one will run and run.

Why not?

It's fun and watchable which is far more than can be said for the reality garbage that fills up most of the schedules these days. The presenters can be smug and irritating but that's part of the charm of it.

Apparently...

It's really popular in the USA where practically every car show is heavily sponsored (and therefore editorialised) by one of the major car companies.

"The Mist" magazine article

I happen to have recently read an interview about this film by the director of The Shawshank Redemption. It mentioned that he's a fan of the show.

Is this a new series?

Or just repeat of the last one?

It's impossible to tell

...

Repeat of the last one...

(I love it, btw).

James May...

...is the only reason to watch it (his 20th Century and Big Ideas shows were excellent). Also, he's always struck me as the sort of bloke who has a good library and a decent record collection (whereas Clarkson's terrible tastes are well known and as Hammond used to be a tin-pot local radio DJ, he's bound to own at least one Bon Jovi CD...).

James May = Good Thing

Have you been watching James May's thing with Oz Clarke and drinking recently? I think it's great; plenty of mild bickering (use of the word 'fathead), and Oz and James actually seem quite genuine, unlike top gear. Sure its on the iPlayer.

Agreed...

Love the Oz & James thing. Quality TV.

Having watched this series

on TV and online iPlayer I am very much of the opinion that this should be made into a film. It would quickly become a cult classic and there will be tours to follow in their footsteps, Drinking for Britain (& Ireland).

I will drink to that...and not with tea.

Clarkson's "terrible" musical tastes

He's a huge fan of both The Doobies and Bob Seger.

Personally, I would regard this as evidence of good musical taste

Used to hate it and now I love it

Mainly hated it because Clarkson slagged off my beloved Birmingham. Last nights episode was particularly interesting for me as i am going to Japan in the summer and it was a brief snapshot of what to expect since we will be travelling on bullet trains too.

However the funniest thing about last night was his comment that Sarah Jessica Parker (if thats her name, anyway the lead from Sex in the City) had a face that looked like a boiled horse. How right he is even if a little non PC.

You will love Japan

The trains are never late....and its a wonderful country.

Must admit

i'm a big fan of Top Gear, much to the the constant bemusement of Mrs M. Echo earlier comments that it is loads better than much of the reality shows etc that litter TV at the moment. Plus I find myself laughing out loud to it, again something i don't often find myself doing with most of the current TV.

It has to be said...

Can I be the first to really agree with the original statement that TG is crap? I accept that James May is fine on his own shows and I've got nothing against Hammond either, but Clarkson is basically a humourless school bully who like an anti-Midas, turns everything he touches to pure faeces.

He even damaged an episode of the peerless QI with his 'look at me, I'm not politically correct' style statements (I hesitate to call them jokes). I'm all for a bit of free speech and saying what you think on TV but the ratio of how funny he actually is to how funny he thinks he is has got way out of balance in my opinion. And I would say that loving Seger and the Doobies is far from evidence of impeccable taste (although I agree it could be worse).

Anyway most cars are totally boring these days so I guess they need a knobend like him to liven things up a bit.

overblown rubbish

If you are not enamoured with the construct that cars are sexy and can improve your sexual performance/ capacity to drink, then the content of this programme is flimsy.

Just not my thing.
