Just my imagination
Posted by Chris Young on 3 April 2009 - 8:24am.
Whilst packing the Youngsters lunches this morning I heard this Andy Williams tune on the radio.
It used to be an in car favourite when the kids were younger so we got to hear it quite a lot. I could never listen without thinking that it would sound good covered by Elvis Costello. I have thought this so many times now that I even had to have a quick look on Spotify to check that it hadn't been done.
Does anyone else suffer from phantom cover versions?

This Must Be Love
The Phil Collins tune off "Face Value". I always hear John Martyn singing it. Same with "Everyday" off "Both Sides".
Waiting In Vain
I can hear a great version of this Bob Marley song by John Martyn in my head. Unfortunately it doesn't exist.
Yes. Goin’ Back
A great Carol King song, also covered by The Byrds and Dusty Springfield. I love all three versions. But I think I would sacrifice a limb to hear it being sung by Karen Carpenter. (Obviously, with things as they are Karen-wise my limbs can rest easy. As usual.)
You and Me Both
Great spot Richard
I suppose
I've got a long wait for Pinky and Perky's version of 'The Gates of Delirium'.
Just listen to the vinyl, switch it to 45rpm and you're there!
On the other hand, don't... it would be truly horrible.
Probably
Here's one from their new direction tho'
Alternatively....
The Higsons
did a passable cover of MTWTGGB.Which if you stand back from and squint at, could sound a bit like EC, It could be that which is in you memory box.
It is not you tube'd or spotify'd...so you will have to take my word for it! So there!
Everything is fine
I saw Eraserhead for the first time a couple of weeks ago and cannot shake the feeling that either Beth Gibbons (with or without Portishead) or Radiohead ought to cover this:
I know The Pixies covered it, but that's not at all the same.
Lost in Music
Back when the Stereo MCs were flavour of the month (1993?), I read that one of their early b-sides was called "Lost in Music." I figured this must be a cover of the Sisters Sledge classic, and imagined how it would be great in the Stereo MC's style -- I had this song completely mapped out in my mind, in fact.
"Responsibility, to me it's a tragedy. I'll get a job some other time . . . " etc., etc.
I was later disappointed to hear that the Stereos "Lost in Music" was, in fact, an original. But I still "remember" this phantom cover version.
I am mystified why the song hasn't been covered a hundred times. It's fantastic, with a great melody and lyrics, and could easily be adapted into a more contemporary style.
That a challenge, Moko?
Probably the first and only time you will catch me referencing this lot!
Don't forget
Nils Lofgren's fine version of Goin' Back (and of course this post should be several yards further up the page - sorry).
