Just the hardest working band from (east) L.A.

Is there a tribute album to anyone half decent that Los Lobos won't or don't appear on? I used to think either the Cowboy Junkies or Lucinda Williams might be the most ubiquitous such artists, due to their sheer volume of appearances in the aural support of another artists catalogue, but Los Lobos (or the excellent Los Lobos, as I prefer to call them), seem to be leaving the competition way behind. I learn tonight of a tribute to Doug Sahm that is out or just about to be, featuring LL. As I pan back thru' my shelves alone I note also they can "do" the Dead, Richard Thompson, Bruce Springsteen and Fats Domino. Researching further they are on a Disney album, a Johnny Thunders album and (damn, damn, damn, why did I look?!) a tribute to Queen. And that Dylan film.
And Hidalgo pops off to prop up the last nameds latest that some of you other bloggers keep on going on about.
Plus some of the best original music of their own.
Let's have a celebration:

No question about it

The Lobes (sorry!) are one of the best - I saw them live years ago when a pal of mine was their tour manager over here. He told me that people just stood and watched, open-mouthed, during their sound-checks, they were so good.

It's a pity they only cropped up in the greater public conciousness by virtue of what was (let's be honest) something of a novelty hit - albeit a good one.

My only complaint is that they haven't yet done anything to top one of their earliest records - "Will The Wolf Survive" is a cracking album.

Ooh - and don't foget - they make a good job of contributing to the last track on Graceland as well...

most ubiquitous....

....shurely Emmylou?

It's got to the stage with me that if I find out she's on the CD, I don't buy it.

Pity that cos I usecd to like her.

Emmytribu

Good point: I confess to her being one equivalent marker, along with LL, the CJs and Lucinda, as mentioned originally. There was a time when R.E.M. fulfilled a similar role, thinking of one each of the various RT and Lenny Cohen tribs.
(Goldarn it, I love a good tribute LP! Hate a bad one tho' and Turn Turn Turn, the Byrds covered, is one such, even with RT+Gregson/Collister on 2 tracks, including a leaden Hickory Wind)

I totally agree

with you. Los Lobos are legends in their own right and check out their Ride and Ride This cd's - their albums of cover versions and the artist they covered doing versions of their songs. Retro if you like Tribute albums check out the tribute album to Chris Gaffney coming out later this month which features Los Lobos, Dave Alvin, Tom Russell, Lucinda Williams and several others. Mine is on order.
