Just back from seeing Kate Rusby's Christmas show...

...at the smaller bit of the O2 - can there be a lovelier sound at this time of year than a brass band?

Sadly they didn't do this one, the stand out for me from Sweet Bells, Kate's seasonal CD

So my question is, if I wanted a CD of brass band music, where do I start?

Say no to Brass Bands

Can there be a lovelier sound than a Brass band? Yes. I've never liked them. I remember one came to our school and it should have been a good skive but I thought it was just awful. I don't think that's what makes me dislike them though. Perhaps it's just the sound, perhaps it's that you hear them this time of year and so it reminds me of Christmas which again in my book is a bad thing. I can't begin to think how bad it must be being in the same room as a brass band and Kate Rusby - I think I'd rather watch Coldplay... or better still rip my ears off.

Not quite true

Actually, I've managed to get most of my friends and family to accept my aversion and so I can now manage December pretty much unencumbered by it. This December has been the least stressful of at least the last 10 years. Without the pressure of feeling I have to conform to avoid upset I can think straight enough to plan what I'm going to do with the long break from work. I've never had any problem with other people enjoying themselves so I don't actually need it to go away completely.
On this occasion though, I was wondering weather I don't like brass bands because of the association with Christmas. I don't think it is because of the number of Christmas records that I like but who knows? I wonder if there has ever been any research about whether people like different types of music because of their upbringing or things that happened to them at some stage.

Brass bands instill in me...

warm feelings of nostalgia, melancholy and happiness. Lovely.

Not just for Christmas

That Kate Rusby album is just wonderful, and like all the very best puppies, it's not just for Christmas. Saw her in Brighton last week and she was superb. I find most of her 'normal' albums a little similar - by the sixth track I'm yearning for a bit of Balaam and the Angel - but Sweet Bells is a corker.
