Julian Cope

When:
30/7/2011
Where:
Harrogate Theatre
Comments:
I've never seen Julian Cope perform before, but various asides from the man himself and audience members seemed to suggest he was being exceptionally well behaved - Harrogate seems to have that effect on performers. The set list included Teardrop Explodes numbers, as well an excellent Cromwell in Ireland (Oi!) with accompanying bass drum, and an obscene ditty about Courney Love and Madonna in a canoe. Mostly it was Julian on stage alone with guitar/foot gizmo or keyboard and marvellous vocals throughout. Of course there were also the stories - his ideal (very un-PC) funeral arrangements, plugs for his new book, the benefits of being a cartoon character and why he will never whistle again (blame Axel Rose). There were obviously some dedicated fans who whooped in all the right places at songs from St Julian, Fried, Peggy Suicide, Autogeddon etc.
The Audience:
It was never going to be a wild night sitting in a small theatre with its velveteen chairs and ormolu. I did see someone under 25, but it turned out to be the son of one of the organisers.
Food & Drink:
Theatre house rules stated there had to be an interval so drinks can be collected from the bar, all the usual stuff I expect but I didn't go. In the auditorium you could buy Yorkshire ice cream in tubs, sold by usherettes.
It Made Me Think...:
there should be more people around like Julian Cope.

New book?
what's that about then?
Ah Copey...
The crazy, loveable old so-and-so.
Saw him between Peggy Suicide and Jehovahkill, and he was wonderful.
Glad to hear he's still got the stuff...
Must venture out and see him again sometime.
Thanks for posting the review.
He'd be a quality podcast guest, wouldn't he?
Not one.
Not two. But three new books.

This was a great show - even
This was a great show - even with the couple of herberts from Black Sheep doing their bit on bvs and bass drum . Not seen Cope since about 20 Mothers and really enjoyed the 30+ (!) songs played . Some great new ones - Julian in the Underworld / Let the Beer Flow Over Me-plus classics from last 30+ (!) years . Made me realise how good this Cope can be ...one man and his mellotron .
