Jukebox Jury
Posted by Olthwaite on 21 February 2010 - 10:55pm.
Following on (ie: copying) from the recent thread about songs that sound great on the radio, I just put the Rezillos' Top of the Pops on the jukebox at the Rat and Ratchet pub in Huddersfield. I hadn't heard it in years and it sounded great.
So which songs sound fabulous on a jukey and which songs make you want to walk out of the boozer?
PS Last time I mentioned jukeboxes, a sniffier London correspondent pooh-poohed my rural outdatedness and mentioned something about iPods and speakers in pubs (what infernal contrapations are these?). So Londoners, loosen your cravats and remember the good old days of jukeboxes.

Led Zep,s..
Rock,n Roll...essential to space invaders button bashing !!
Bat Out Of Hell - Meatloaf
was my regular jukebox selection in the Blue Posts which used to be on Oxford Street. Longer songs were value for money!!!
I don't know if it's just Huddersfield ...
... but I particularly used to love Dean Martin singing Little Old Wine Drinker Me when it played on the jukebox in the Rising Sun in Shelley. Perfect accompaniment to a game of 5s and 3s.
End of the Evening
It was a bit of a tradition to play "From A Jack To A King" on the juke at chucking out time in my youth.
Hotel California or I'm A Believer
It's pub ettiquette for everyone to do the "BONK BONK" thing with their glasses as the intro ends and the vocal starts.
Similarly I'm A Believer. BONK BONK BONK "OI!"
I was in a bar in Cape Town with my wife a few years ago. The song came on. All the Brits dotted around the place did this. All the japies looked bemused.
The Trent House in Newcastle...
... the last time I was there, had Theme de Yo Yo by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago in its jukebox.
My goodness it sounded good!
Every time I see a jukebox
I look for "Red River Rock" by Johnny & The Hurricanes.
Brighouse
Having travelled the short distance from Huddersfield to play in a footy match I was most impressed by the jukebox in a Brighouse pub when I was able to select 'Don't Touch Me There' by the Tubes.
I always loved to hear this...
This one too...
That record is another
place where it's always summer. I don't want to start a new thread, but I'm gobsmacked to have discovered just five mins ago that TN actually released a further three singles and an album after this. It gets a good review on allmusic.com, but so does every other record ever released.
Have anyone out there heard it? Is it any good?
Many years ago.
My old local the Bear&Billet used to let us choose the content. These were played a lot
Got to keep on dancing...
Boogie Nights on ipod just made my weekly hour in Tesco's bearable.
'Another Nail In My Heart' by Squeeze...
sounds amazing in pubs. Particularly the one I was in in St Austell around 10 years ago.
We'd always try and find a Fall
track. Particularly enjoyed a jukebox with Cruiser's Creek
Coach & Horses
Chorlton Green, Manchester. Mid-1980s. Had the best jukebox ever. Not a chart-hit in sight. We had a flat just round the corner and went there for Sunday lunch most weeks to a soundtrack of Neil Young, Eagles, CSN, Teardrop Explodes, Bunnymen etc etc. Oh, and Kevin 'Curly Watts' Kennedy was a regular too..
The Belvedere
Brighton seafront used to sport a fine country & western selection on it's jukebox.
'Pour Me Another Tequila Sheila' was always first on, closely followed by Waylon, Willie and the boys.
Freda Payne's "Band Of Gold"
Frickin' amazing on 7" vinyl, cut amazingly loudly, great record...
I'm the proud owner...
...of an old Seeburg jukebox. It only holds 50 singles so it gets changed around fairly often. Those that tend to stick around just sound great on 7". Not sure if it's the way they were recorded / mastered, or just luck, but they're always the first thing put on. They include:
Robert Gordon (& Link Wray) - Red Hot
Sir Douglas Quintet - Mendochino
and
Tony Bennett - Rags To Riches (with One More For The Road on the flip)
campbell vs darin
hats off to the artist Tom Mckean and his mate Pat who has a jukebox in his front room.
and the winner on the jukebox randomizer was
a nose ahead of

Tony Christie
I'd play this one
Avenues & Alleyways
And walk out if this ones played
Is This The Way To Amarillo
The perfect juke box record for me is
