Joni Mitchell saves northern town's historic water tower
Posted by Georgedivided on 21 May 2011 - 10:40am.
That's right, the 'Help Me' hit-maker has single handedly saved an historic water tower in Warrington*.
Developers had planned to tear down a lully water tower and replace it with a car park. During a recent council meeting Clr Geoff Settle (LAB - Poulton North) said: “I don’t want to be looking back in 12 months time only to be quoting the words of Joni Mitchell saying ‘don’t it always seem to be you don’t know what you’ve got till its gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot’.”
The committee voted unanimously to refuse the applications.
Hurrah!
Here's Joni

There have been numerous plans to regenerate the area which have come to nothing partly because of objections to remove the tower. Iconic as it is the cost up bring it up to scratch isnt worth it to most developers
I live in Warrington
I think the tower is an eye-sore. Plus, we could do with more car parks near the town centre.
Love Joni, though.
I do to
I agree to a point, the tower is irrelevant but more car parks? the whole area around bridge street needs improving and I doubt a car park in such an inaccesable area traffic wise would be wise.
The whole of Warrington town centre
is inaccessible to traffic as far as I can tell. The cars crawl around Bridge Foot and toward the rugby ground. At times, all of it is a car park!!
I love the water tower
and commend the council for saving it. For now. Warrington is not short of car parks.
The traffic situation is in need of attention, mind.
Single Handed Water Tower Saviour
One more reason I love Joni.
Did Clr Geoff Settle (LAB - Poulton North)
Giggle in a false, high pitched voice after he finished the line?
