John, Paul, George & Bongo - again! yeah, yeah, yeah!

daff's picture

Is there no end to it?!?!
I Tunes are plugging the Beatles 1's album for pre-order! Is there anyone out there sitting thinking 'hmm....I see this is out soon - I have waited months for this so, it's only £8.99 too - What a bargain - I must pre-order it'?

I wonder will it be the crappy, tinny...

...sound of the (disgracefully pre-remastering) CD version or will the tracks now be replaced by the remastered versions? Which will now of course be compressed as MP3s...

I Remastered

No I understand it will be the remastered stuff.
Anyway it would be totally wrong to be using the old transfers - that would be like paying again for something you already owned! No one would be daft enough to do that would they?!?!?! ;)

I've no interest in it...

however, whatever way you look at it, less than a tenner for that collection of songs isn't bad value if you don't have 'em already. If you do have 'em already, you're not in the target audience...

Perhaps this will tempt you

The 1 album is also available as a CD with the new remastered audio recordings in a new digipak case. Only at the official Beatles store you can order your CD bundled with a custom design T-shirt.

We have also produced a limited edition, numbered lithograph print featuring the covers of the Beatles singles. There are only 500 of these high quality prints available from the US and European official stores.

You can order yours or gift it here:

Europe: http://bit.ly/o0MTEg

Nope! Me neither

what's the point

of pre-ordering a digital download? It's not like they'll sell out, is it?

Where is the mono?

Still unable to justify the cost of the mono box set, I was looking forward to cherry pick some tracks from the mono catalogue. Still no sign of that on Itunes. Surely there will be a market for that?

As somebody who ponied up

for the Mono set, there's a part of me that hopes eejits like me will be 'rewarded' by it *not* being available on iTunes; in other words, there was a premium attached to it by Apple from the get-go, and it'll stay that way.

However, I expect to be disappointed, so don't lose heart! :)

The Mono versions can be *listened* to...

at your chosen download site. If that's your bag baby!

Missed opportunity

I've always mentally filed "1" up there with Love Songs or Ballads or the dreaded Movie Medley (young readers, look away). So although I have forever been a sucker for added fabness (looks lovingly at the mono box set that is kind of hidden in his bookcase so he never quite had to admit to his nearest and dearest that he spent THAT MUCH on albums he already owned at least twice), I passed on 1. (Didn't like the bass-forward mix.)

Though, come to think of it, I did buy a cheap copy for my daughter, then aged about eight. It was time for her to know about these things, and audio clarity wasn't going to be an issue.

Anyway...

...it's a missed opportunity because, being on iTunes, there should be no "this is the length of a CD" constraints. We could have had a definitive singles collection (Please Please Me, Strawberry Fields, Walrus, Revolution) which would have provided a more balanced (and Lennony) a picture of the Mops' career - say, 35 tracks long, each track using the best master available. iTunes could have charged £10.99 instead of £8.99, and everybody would have been happy.

I know it's all compressed and MP3ed and so on, but that's how people buy their music today (it says here). 1 is a sappy version of the Beatles story, which could easily have been made so much better.

and another thing

Twist and Shout. Number 1 EP in the UK for eons. Time to stop being precious about composer royalties, accept that covers are an integral part of the Beatles early story, and pony up to Medley/Russell.

Multiple purchases?

Don't sweat it, Anglepoised.....I've just spunked the best part of 60 sovs on the Star Wars bluray set, by my estimates the fifth time I've handed Mr Lucas coin of the realm for his meisterwerks. Comes with free & bonus headshaking and/or eye-rolling by FPO.
