Joe Meeks Master Tapes
Two thousand of Joe Meek's master tapes are going for sale if you have a spare 300 or 400k. Apparently they contain early David Bowie recordings among many other unearthly delights.
With his bio-pic coming anytime soon, does Meek actually mean anything to anyone not old enough to remember? I'm not old enough to remember myself but found my way to the works of Meek through frequent namechecks by acts such as Orbital.
Anybody interested in Meek and what might be contained in those famous tea-chests of his?

are these the
mythical tea chest tapes?
tea chest tapes?
They are indeed. The guy that's been looking after them all these years is selling up on the proviso they remain as one collection and are not broken up.
Apparently there's something in the region of 400 hours worth there in total, from studio ramblings by Meek himself to genuinely rare material including what's believed to be the first recordings of Bowie in a studio setting.
sneaky look...
I managed to get a sneaky look at these because I know the guy selling them. I offered to try and catalogue them but there is literally tons of the stuff all lumped in together. Someone's going to have a lot of fun sorting through them! Wish it was me!
that's cool.....
They are something of a holy grail for Meek fans, aren't they?
I've had a few people in touch with me, from a member of the honeycombs to bands that auditioned for Meek shortly before he died to people telling me what Glenda Collins was doing in the eighties ( working in an Oxfam shop, apparently ).
This is all through a couple of things on my website that are Meek related ( reviews, etc ). It's an interesting world to get into!
