Jimmy Webb and Paddy McAloon!
Posted by russell123 on 4 October 2009 - 10:43pm.
It's one of those thank you for the internet moments.
And not only does Paddy McAloon have new (old) stuff out right now.
So does Jimmy Webb with the Webb Brothers. The new album is called Cottonwood Farm and contains another version of The Highwayman - also fantastic!

What a great find. Webb is
What a great find. Webb is in fine voice (not necessarily always the case from what I've seen of his TV appearances) and McAloon was born to sing the song. And there's nothing like a live orchestra is there? Do you know where the clip originates from, is there more?
I think
it's from an RTE (Irish TV) show, if my memory serves me correct, from the early 90s.
And...
there's a UK tour coming up next month. Not with PadMac unfortunately but with three generations (count 'em) of the Webb family. Living proof that the family that plays together stays together. Oh and Glen Campbell's son is the drummer.
Bob Webb
My understanding is that Robert Webb, Jimmy's father, will not be on the tour as he is not in great health - he is in his late 80s now. Whilst the new version of Highwayman is good the album as a whole is, sadly, receiving poor reviews from fans and critics alike. I am one of the world's biggest Jimmy Webb fans and have to confess some disappointment: Mr Webb seems to want to slow all his music down and certainly does so on many of these numbers. The original demo of the title track Cottonwood Farm was much more vibrant. This is such a pity as the album was produced by Justin Webb of the Webb Brothers and this band can really rock.
See you all at the Union Chapel then.
By the way on the RTE programme Webb played a lovely version (without Paddy) of Adios.
Pure
genius
Thank you for posting
I didn't realise I was going to be so taken with Jimmy Webb. One of those artists I'd heard of but not really listened to.
One of the best songwriters ever
but perhaps not one of the best singers! Rather, like his near contemporary Burt Bacharach. Although, both could be said to have an idiosyncratic charm.
Jimmy seems to have taken a few lessons recently - and he's in pretty good voice on most of his best known songs here

The new/old Sprout CD is a masterpiece. Took a few listens to get it.
masterpiece indeed
My favourite album of the year is a demo recorded in 1992. I am so hip it hurts.
