Jerry Sadowitz
Posted by Vincent on 26 November 2011 - 7:05pm.
When:
Friday 25th November, 2011
Where:
Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK
Comments:
You want sour spleen, bile, and bitter, savage comedy that shows up Frankie Boyle for the lucky chancer he is? Jerry Sadowitz is your man. Some brilliant and unspeakable observations on the great no-nos of public debate, shrewd insight into paedophilia and it's complexities, and a thorough jumping on Jimmy Savile's grave and Ricky Gervais's snide complacency. And some great magic, too.
The Audience:
Lots of folks laughing when their pet prejudice comes up, and strangely silent when their no-go area is likewise intruded on.
Food & Drink:
Pint in the CAMRA-recommended 'Posada' pub. Then an ace curry over the way in the Michelin-starred (I jest not; it's also in the Good Food Guide) 'Bilash'.
It Made Me Think...:
I suspect Jerry is genuinely angry and hurt by the world, and doubt that even the love of a good woman could save him now. Amazing that people still find it funny to hear the word "cnut" (sp.).

I did philosophy
with jerry's sister in the 80s. nice girl.
Jerry's tougher to take than Frankie Boyle. FB is way more palatable. Having said that though it's not because FB is a compromise - he is just funnier.
Sado witz - that's 'sadistic joke' in German oder? very apt.
He's one of the best I've ever seen
but it's a bit of a relief when it's over - he's pretty exhausting to watch.
I've seen him a few times over the last twenty years and he hasn't mellowed. I heard a recording from his current tour and it sounds like his bile duct is as active as ever. While I find him very, very funny I've never found him remotely offensive (and I'm not an "anything goes" comedy fan) - but he's so OTT that he's like a cartoon character.
I saw Sadowitz twice in the late 80's
He truly was a force of nature, expertly mixing magic tricks and jaw-droppingly taboo jokes. At a time when Ben Elton was supposedly the face of alternative stand-up comedy, Sadowitz was a refeshing blast of negative energy. Sadly he had his massive nervous breakdown shortly afterwards, and has never been anywhere as good whenever I've seen him since ( the less said about that godawful Channel 5 show he did in the late 90's the better )
Bilash
No star, merely "rated", i.e. mentioned in dispatches.
