When:
4th March 2010
Where:
Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry
Comments:
Jerry Dammers opened his tour with a barnstorming hometown show. This adventure blends Sun Ra with ska, in a joyful uplifting antidote to the grimness of the world. He's got great musicians - Terry Edwards on baritone, Denys Baptiste on tenor, Zoe Rahman on piano, and 14 others - and they play with vibrancy. The version of 'Ghost Town' was magnificent, with a cameo from the elder statesman Rico Rodriguez. The show finished with Sun Ra's 'Space Is The Place', and the band danced offstage and played acoustically for another ten minutes in the foyer. I was delighted to get the chance to shake Jerry's hand and dance with the band.
The Audience:
Some hipsters, some mods, some jazzers, quite a lot of couples. T-shirts representing Sun Ra and Tommy McCook in evidence.
Food & Drink:
Reasonably priced drinks. Didn't get as far as food, but the on-site record shop is a darned good idea.
It Made Me Think...:
How lucky we are to live in a time when we can go to see an 18 piece band playing music that swings and drives and lifts you up. and also <b>"There's no limit, space is the place"</b>
