Jeff Beck's syrup

Colin H's picture

Carol From Luton recently suggested, off list, that there was something very fishy about the Beckmeister's head situation: if it's a wig, was it on straight when he appeared in the George Martin doc?

Questions were then raised about Ronnie Wood...

Who are/were the great wig-wearers of rock who should, frankly, get over themselves and just make the music? (obviously, that can't include those in the 'were' category!)

For a start:

Carl Perkins
Richie Blackmore
Ian Paice

I have my suspicions about Biff Byford...

Are Deep Purple the most wig-out band in rock? Toupee the Pops?

I see

Robin Gibb is bewigged again. He had a period without his beloved pet but must have missed its company.

Phil Spector.

Wig-tastic.

Any thoughts on Sir Clifford? Do we reckon the luxuriant tonsorialled one is all his own or are there some added extras in there?

Six Dog | 4 May 2011 - 4:59pm

Jagger.

Dad was bald.
Brother bald.

Jagger is almost 70 and look at him. Really.

eddie g | 4 May 2011 - 5:00pm

Yes,

He's come a long way since the days when he was still Hayley Mills

0
Helena Handcart | 4 May 2011 - 11:56pm

Yes, Jagger...

...surely no doubt about it (or, as Mick would put it, 'Nowurrrrgh DAHHHHHT ABAAAAHT ud - yeah!').

and they don't get more ludicrous than Spector do they?

I almost forgot - Helena of Handcart fame told an anecdote at the Akkerman get-together last week of seeing under the Supreme's wigs in the 60s, given she had the close proximity vantage point of a child looking upwards.

And, in similar vein, Dolly Parton of course...

Gary Numan

Went even further, with a a hair transplant many years ago.

0
Resting Place | 4 May 2011 - 5:27pm

But his current thatch

is a syrup, no?

0
Brookster | 4 May 2011 - 5:37pm

Is it really?

Did the transplant not "take"?

His current industrial look is certainly quite voluminous.

David Bowie

is mentioned on http://www.rugorreal.com/ as having some sort of hair replacement. They also reckon Paul McCartney has a weave. I think maybe it just dyed...

bassclef (not verified) | 4 May 2011 - 5:37pm

McCartney's hair

is such a strange orangey-brown colour that I just assumed it was dyed. But maybe that's a cunning distraction … they can be very cunning can these baldies.

0
Brookster | 4 May 2011 - 5:47pm

It's not dyed

Paul's is dead.

1
Captain Underpants | 4 May 2011 - 6:27pm

Paul is Dyed.

Silly Glove Songs

You see, sometimes I've watched people having their hair dyed and they often wear little plastic gloves. You see. So that's why that one is really funny.

Sigh.

I'll be over there if you need me *waves*

Beyonce Knowles

I mean she's not bald or owt, but she's a serial wig-wearer.

0
Brookster | 4 May 2011 - 5:38pm

Neil Sedaka

For years his hair receded more every time he came over for a tour. Then one year he had a magnificent head of hair. Shoulder length as I recall.

I recall Smokey Robinson appearing on a BBC show in the early 90s and he appeared to be wearing a hover wig. You know, the type that sits an inch above the head.

Yes, but Doc...

...you're talking about a Miracle. :-)

Colin H | 4 May 2011 - 6:32pm

Transplant.

I am a total slaphead. recently my Doctor asked me if I had ever considered a transplant.

I told him I thought I would look a cunt with a kidney on my head.

jackthebiscuit | 4 May 2011 - 7:03pm

Look, Jack...

...now you're insulting YOURSELF for God's sake! Keep it together, mate - and stay out of those empty rooms: you'll only start a fight! :-D

The Edge

has a wig that looks like a beanie hat, silly bugger.

0
Dave Amitri | 4 May 2011 - 9:25pm

Richard Thompson's hat

When my son was eight I took him to see the Richard and Danny Thompson's Industry concert in Newcastle
He knew that Richard T was bald and at a suitable break in the concert shouted out "Take your hat off baldy". I had to cover his mouth up before he could shout it again. Mr Thompson was most bemused.

3
hubertrawlinson | 4 May 2011 - 10:12pm

That's a

mighty fine boy you have there, Mr Rawlinson.

0
Helena Handcart | 4 May 2011 - 10:34pm

Why Thank You

Yes he was 22 yesterday and still unusual.

0
hubertrawlinson | 5 May 2011 - 7:17pm

Thompson was probably trying to remember

if 'Take Your Hat Off, Baldy' was a song from Henry The Human Fly.

(It was. Track 2, Side 1.)

0
Adman | 4 May 2011 - 10:47pm

Did you get

the deluxe packaged edition with the hidden track, alas I didn't although I now have the fear of a whole audience shouting it out to Mr T, (thank clapton I use a pseudonym and he can't blame me)

1
hubertrawlinson | 5 May 2011 - 7:22pm

Blackmore

Always amused me that he tried to pass it off as a transplant when it was obviously a wig. There has never been a transplant as thick and luxuriant as what suddenly appeared on his head in the late 70s.
