What's it called?:
Queen of Denmark
What It Sounds Like:
On first listening it sounds as though John Grant not moved on that much from his days in The Czars. This is not a bad thing, but considering the time between Goodbye and this album, expectations run high.
On further listening though, the album reveals itself and all its glory. Grants voice is unique, and like Rufus Wainwrights this could be a bind, but wrapped in tinkling piano motifs, electronic washes and honky tonk(!) treasures abound.
There are laugh out loud lyrics - Sigourney Weaver and Chicken Bones, the natural successor to the Gilbert O’Sulivan classic - Nothing Rhymed Silver Platter Club and a gorgeous love song - Caramel.
The over-riding air is one of melancholy, not a self pitying melancholy but a glorious lush melancholy. If Queen Of Denmark does end up top five in the end of year polls everyone has cloth ears and I will eat my hat. Beautiful baroque pop music.
What Does It All "Mean"?:
This record matters because every song has a tune, great lyrics, and a lovely sympathic production. It's a record that will grow and grow, then you'll have to put it away for a bit, and when you get it out again, it will surprise you once more.
Goes well with...:
I listened to it driving back from a gig, then I listened to it with my feet up, head phones, red wine and a doobie. Perfect.
Might Suit People Who Like...:
The Czars, Wood Pigeon, Rufus Wainwright, Brian Eno, Jim Reeves, Gilbert O' Sullivan, Steely Dan and Paul Burch
