James Corden

Chimney Singing Cheryl Cole's picture

I am rapidly developing severe antipathy towards the corpulent fellow.

Fresh from putting in a frankly embarrassing turn at the Brits, his pleading mug is now leering out at me from hundreds of bus-sides all across London advertising what I imagine will be an excerable sketch show.

On the advice of the good people of this forum I tried Gavin & Stacey as a sort of antidote. Have I missed something?

I can understand that it isn't cruel like much comedy. It has warmth. Good - that's definitely to be welcomed.

However - it isn't that funny is it? You can see the jokes coming a mile off. I don't see the difference between the show and any other BBC sitcom on at 8pm on a Friday night such as 2.4 Children or that one with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden.

Corden - you have incurred my displeasure

The sketch show is very hit and miss

I've seen the first one and there are some good bits, especially Corden as Ricky Gervais. Someone dares send up Gervais - very brave. He won't like that one bit.

But Corden should be careful he doesn't blow all the goodwill that's come his way post G&S. There's nothing worse than fame going to someone's head. He needs to keep his feet on the ground or we could go off him.

The Gervais backlash continues

in this month's Word, Alexi Sayle has a pop.

The Gervais backlash

started with the 11 O'clock show.

TedLoaf | 4 March 2009 - 12:49pm

Ricky Gervais...

is becoming painful to watch. He set sail for the centre of his own arsehole a few years ago and should be reaching his destination any day now.

However, I still like 'The Office' for the reason that the moment when Tim and Dawn finally get together is lovely and genuinely moving.

Although I'm a fan of Gavin & Stacey

I do find Corden irritating and unfunny in his recent efforts. The thought of watching the sketch show does not appeal.

ChaosandMorphine | 4 March 2009 - 12:37pm

Half Welsh

I quite like Gavin & Stacey, but then I'm half Welsh, just like the programme. The Welsh side for sure is painfully and accurately like people I know.

I actually cringe a lot when Corden is on though, he's just way too over the top for my liking. Matthew Horne on the other hand I think is a really good comedy actor, when he's not side by side with his mate.

Strange crushes on Joanna Page and Ruth Jones aside I'm a pretty big fan of Rob Brydon; I think he's hilarious, in the show or out.

0
SimonL | 4 March 2009 - 12:40pm

Strange?

Nothing strange about having a crush on Joanna Page. Is there?

The Brydon backlash seems to have started too.

0
Red Umpire | 4 March 2009 - 1:35pm

Nothing strange

Not really, except she reminds me of half my family. Which isn't so good.....

0
SimonL | 4 March 2009 - 1:54pm

I'm assuming

you mean the female half ;-)

0
Joe R | 4 March 2009 - 2:01pm

I think they're female.

I leave that to the Vet to find out.

Best Line goes to Nessa

Yes

...but nicked from the Viz letters page from years ago

0
Chimney Singing... | 5 March 2009 - 5:41pm

Am with you on

Gavin and Stacey. Just don't see what all the fuss is about, and the xmas special was frankly a poor effort

0
Mint | 4 March 2009 - 12:42pm

The 15 minutes is almost up...

...for messrs Corden, Horne and Brydon. I could never see what the fuss was about with Gavin and Stacey and with the imminent arrival of a C&H TV show and new movie (Lesbian Vampire Killers), I suspect their stock is about to fall.

0
Handsome.P.Wonderful | 4 March 2009 - 1:07pm

Lesbian Vampire Killers...

...has got 'poor man's Shaun of the Dead' written all over it.

Actually, probably even a poor man's Alien Autopsy.

0
Chimney Singing... | 4 March 2009 - 1:23pm

Ahem, Roman Polanski

Has everyone forgotten Polanski did a comedy called The Fearless Vampire Killers, or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are in My Neck.

It's terrible, but still I find it odd no one mentions it.

LOUDspeaker | 4 March 2009 - 1:53pm

Brydon?

Nooo....

Comic actor extraordinaire....

Horne is an actor, not a comic or writer and that's primarily why he died on his @rse at the Brits and why the sketch show will suffer a similar fate. Corden, I do like and think he's a genuinely talented writer. Just needs to know when to "tone down the volume". Will get better as he gets older

0
Six Dog | 4 March 2009 - 1:33pm

Back off

Brydon!
He's a national treasure.

0
ChaosandMorphine | 4 March 2009 - 1:35pm

No

But he thinks he is.

0
Five-Centres | 4 March 2009 - 2:03pm

Not in our house he's not

0
Handsome.P.Wonderful | 4 March 2009 - 3:33pm

Hey!

I posted that link earlier! (See above.)

No harm done. It's not it was a link to the Daily Mail is it...?

0
Red Umpire | 4 March 2009 - 3:55pm

Sorry David

I missed it.

0
Handsome.P.Wonderful | 4 March 2009 - 3:56pm

He's really not as funny as he thinks he is

I've seen him do awards shows and he's not the star turn, which he realises and doesn't like very much.

In the flesh he's dull and stand-offish.

0
Five-Centres | 4 March 2009 - 4:02pm

I worked with Rob

for many years and 'dull and stand-offish' do not describe the man I knew. He was always charming, friendly and funny. ( Never liked G&S though. ).

0
eddie g | 4 March 2009 - 8:04pm

No worries

No worries, Mr Wonderful.

I'm going to see Mr Brydon in Liverpool sometime in April. I hope his show has improved by then.

0
Red Umpire | 4 March 2009 - 4:12pm

He's mistaking

people liking his show with people liking him. I think Gavin and Stacey is great, but he's not the star of it, far from it in fact. Kudos to him (and Ruth Jones) for writing it, but that doesn't mean his "I'm chubby but I know it but I still get loadsa girls" should be everywhere.

If he's not careful, he could soon be onstage at a cancelled Morrissey concert wondering why people are throwing stuff at him and booing.

Rob Brydon on the other hand is fantastic and improves any show he's on (witness QI from a couple of weeks ago)

0
Joe R | 4 March 2009 - 1:37pm

Think you and John Waite got it about right

In other words your opinions coincide with mine so must be correct! On the one you can understand these people making the most of the opportunities while they can, but we soon tire of them all with their ubiquity - though mostly it's us cynical types who get most het up and maybe can't wait to bash them when they get too successful. He (James) will remain popular with a lot of public nevertheless.

0
Sven Garlic | 4 March 2009 - 1:49pm

He reminds me

a bit of blokes at school/ uni who would create a construct of a 'sensitive man' and use it to try to get girls, mostly unsuccessfully. They'd end up being 'best friends' or 'one of the girls' while secretly loathing the position in which they found themselves.

I don't buy that from him - I think he's trying to hard to come across as nice and loveable.

0
Chimney Singing... | 4 March 2009 - 1:52pm

You are...

....listing my broken dreams.....

0
Six Dog | 4 March 2009 - 2:58pm

Corden should stick to acting

I've seen him on stage a couple of times (Brits and Amnesty) and he is dreadful. He mistakes a lot of jumping about and shouting for humour.

0
Simon Ford | 4 March 2009 - 1:42pm

Rob Brydon

Deserves a huge amount of respect for the incredible 'Human Remains'but I have little time for anything else he's done

0
Chimney Singing... | 4 March 2009 - 1:43pm

Corden

I've caught him on a couple of game shows and he's irritatingly loud and over familiar with other guests. He also laughs too hard at things that aren't laugh out loud funny. All in all he's a bit "media" if you know what I mean and obviously wants to always be the centre of attention.

Contrast that with Matthew Horne when he was on Buzzcocks and he just seems to be an affable bloke happy to go with the flow, make a bit of a tit of himself (if expected) and generally mix in with the crowd.

0
Ahh_Bisto | 4 March 2009 - 2:11pm

I've remembered where I've seen him before

Wasn't he also Otho in Beetlejuice?

Charlie Gordon | 4 March 2009 - 2:31pm

Corden comes of age

Nice to see he's finally cast in adult parts though, he played a schoolboy in Teachers well into his mid-twenties.

I'm not really hopefull on the sketch show, Mitchell and Webb's was terrible and I can't think of a good one since Big Train and The Fast Show.

0
kidpresentable | 4 March 2009 - 3:22pm

Mitchell & Webb,

I thought I was the only one!

0
ChaosandMorphine | 4 March 2009 - 4:05pm

Indeed, we seem to be few...

..it appeared to be generally regarded as good, where as I though it was an embarrasment to them.

0
kidpresentable | 5 March 2009 - 3:20am

Harry Enfield's

last comeback sketch series wasn't just unfunny, it was plain cringeworthy - almost shameful to watch.

And what the hell is Al Murray doing?

I quite like Gavin & Stacey but find James Corden the weakest character in the show, he might be better sticking to writing scripts.

0
Retro Man | 4 March 2009 - 6:19pm

Enfield/Stacey

Never been a fan of Enfield. The stuff he did on Sky without Paul Whitehouse's involvement really showed him to be a pretty much an impressionist who had been overpromoted. That said, the Bono/Edge sketches did make me giggle...

Stacey is by far the weakest character in G&S - hardly likely to get a part in Tron is she....

0
Six Dog | 4 March 2009 - 7:04pm

In my opinion (obviously)

Corden is not funny at all and I think he actually knows it and is pretty much waiting to be found out. He does seem to confuse 'loud' with 'something other people will find amusing'. I agree Brydon, Gervais and Enfield are not perfect but I can totally see they are talented, not something I'd accuse Corden of. I predict a Slattery-style meltdown for him in the near future (not wishing any harm on him, it just looks likely). Please never let him on QI... unless it's already happened in which case please never let me see it.

"Corden - you have incurred my displeasure"

Mr Crow, I am forthwith stealing this wonderful phrase and claiming it for my own!

0
ganglesprocket | 4 March 2009 - 11:46pm

Smug and too full of himself

I think it was that Channel 4 Quiz Of The Year show he was on over Christmas that got to me. He was really over the top, smug and full of himself and his new found celebrity. I sat watching with my wife getting ever more irritated by the fellow. Before that I cared not a jot, just saw him occasionally on the TV. But now that Brits performance proved he's been reading too much of his own press and is up his own backside.

I see he's on J.Ross this weekend. More pressure on the Skyplus fast forward button for me then.

0
Almost Simon | 5 March 2009 - 8:04am

He's an unfunny, overweight,...

...overrated (especially by James Corden) tw@t.

0
kb | 5 March 2009 - 5:52pm

Just stop

I am already fed up with the trailer for the new Horne/Corden sketch show. A spoof on "Ghost"... even Cannon and Ball could do better than that?!

I really liked G&S, where Matthew Horne was effectively the straight man for James Horden's 'Smiffy', and a foil against Ruth Jones. But the more I see them (smug & lovin' it) the more I want to commit acts of violence.

0
ChrisMoody | 5 March 2009 - 6:49pm

GAVIN & STACY

Gavin and Stacey = good / Horne/Corden sketch show = riding on the crest of a particularly bad BBC policy of commissioning sub-shit-we need another little britain-merchandise overload-toss...

Oops, thats done it... scarper!
