James Blake

Dick Grant's picture
When:
7th Feb 2010
Where:
Rough Trade East
Comments:
Rock has a great tradition of "make out" music. You know the type of thing, light a candle, spray on an extra layer of Aramis and stretch out with someone special. Oh and put on some music. Dark Side of the Moon, Solid Air, Massive Attack or Napalm Death perhaps. James Blake seems to be make out music for the Dub-Step generation and he is none the worse for that. He reminds me a little of the early serious young John Martyn. Instead of echoplex we have multiple layered looping vocals and huge bass sounds, but the yearning keening voice is in situ. If you feel you are a bit old for this new fangled stuff give The Wihelem Scream a try and thank my 16 year old for alerting us both.
The Audience:
The hipsters of East London in full plaid regalia and me a 50 year old train driver.
Food & Drink:
None. Early shift next day so straight home to bed. Rock and Roll eh?
It Made Me Think...:
I'm glad to see people still take music as seriously as I did in my young and I envy them their unquestioning devotion
