Hmmm
This seems a bit odd to me. A great record but feels like this gig is nostalgia for something that never happened. Ver Scream never played most of this stuff live. Dr Alex Paterson, Jah Wobble, Denise Johnson and Andrew Weatherall are responsible for the vast majority of what you hear on that record. Will they be involved I wonder?
They might well be...
special guests are reasonably common at such events.
The opportunity to hear Screamdelica played live in a massive venue, at massive volume, is unspeakably exciting. I don't care if it's false nostalgia, really. The live version of Don't Fight It Feel It that was on the Select Unknown Pleasures tape in 1994 is tantalising enough
It certainly is an intriguing idea
What was great about Screamadelica was the way they didn't try and make it sound like 'a band' and merged the soungwriting process with what was effectively dance/dub remixing. DFIFI is basically a fairly straight dance track, with some heavily processed guitars, possibly a bit of tambourine by Bobby G. Its still pretty radical stuff for a 'rock band' to do especially as an album track amid more traditional songs like Movin On Up.
The live track on the select tape I recall they added live drums, bass and rocked out. It goes into the 'Hey Bulldog' riff doesn't it? I wonder if they'll do similar re-inventions when they play this gig or whether they'll try and re-create the record and leave it as a sequenced tune? I seem to recall seeing them in 91 and they struggled a bit to deliver the more complex stuff like 'Higher than the Sun' but the technology is far better these days to mix computer backing with live.
Hmmm...
A couple of years ago i'd have been ecstatic at this news but that Glastonbury performance a few years ago was so cringey it just put me right off them , and i was a big fan.
However , i went to see the Chemical Brothers last year at Olympia and what did they drop into their set ? Only Don't Fight it Feel it and it was the best part of the show ... so i might be there after all.
I hope they include this
