iTunes Top Five-Off

qwahamaman's picture

Whilst I love the randomizer game, it is sometimes not a completely fair reflection of one's music collection - there are things on my itunes that I have never heard of, lord knows how they got on there... (The London Boys...??)

A fairer reflection is surely to take the top 5 songs from the '25 most played' playlist, and reveal these honestly and without shame...

So, here goes:

1. Les Epices du Souk Du Caire - Benabar
2. Snake Charmer - Benny Berrigan
3. Two Year Montage - Theodore Shapiro
4. Ol' 55 - Tom Waits
5. I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You - Natalie Merchant

Not bad for a start, I suppose...

0

I think my top 5 reflects tunes that fit best onto playlists.

1) In MacDonalds - Burial
2) Twin Peaks - Angelo Badalamenti
3) My Girls - Animal Collective
4) 1234 - Feist
5) Don't Be Afraid, You're Already Dead - Akron/Family

None of these are really favorites as such, but they all end up on playlists for some reason...

My library is shared with Mrs Bob.

And so I'm not sure that 53 plays for "Winter Winds" by Mumford & Suns is really that representative of my taste (I don't mind the Mumfords' record, but she's faintly obsessed with it, so it takes up about the first 8 places).

After that, it's heavily skewed by my gym playlist, which is 8 hours of floor-fillers and rockers. But still, here's what we get:

1) Black Shuck - The Darkness
2) A Modern Way Of Letting Go - Idlewild
3) Just Dance - Lady Gaga
4) S&M - Rihanna
5) Burn Baby Burn - Ash

My library is my own

so I can only blame myself. But it never changes. Top song has had over 200 plays.

1. Germ Free Adolescents/X-Ray Spex
2. Scarborough Fair/Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66
3. Ramblin' Man/Lemon Jelly
4. Les Papillons Noirs/Michelle Arnaud & Serge Gainsbourg
5. I'm In Love With A German Filmstar/The Passions

A man

Eating breakfast in a Hoilday Inn in Chicago just laughed out loud. Thank you what a wonderfully diverse listing.

I haven't give you indigestion!

Five-Centres | 17 November 2011 - 3:12pm

Top 5

1. Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space - Spiritualized
2. Gospel - The National
3. Can You Forgive Her - Pet Shop Boys
4. Reckoner - Radiohead
5. Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space (I Can't Help Falling In Love) - Spiritualized

2 versions of the same song in there! I do think I have listened to at least one of the versions every day for the last year so it's no surprise they are so high in the play count!

Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space (I Can't Help Falling In Love) - Spiritualized

My top 5

1. Young Blood - The Naked and the Famous
2. TRON Legacy (End Titles) - Daft Punk
3. Derezzed - Daft Punk
4. Sunday (Moby mix) - David Bowie
5. Isolation - Joy Division

After a computer crash which needed to start from Factory

Which only happened last month, my Top25 is nowhere near what it had been from the last two and a half years worth of plays.

However. I still have a Top 5, just not really representative of what I listen to. It's only been 5 weeks of listening, so:

1. Gabriel Faure - Cantique de Jean Rancine
2. Caught In The Wake Forever - LiaFail (At Dawn)
3. George Harrison - While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Live)
4. Iamamiwhoami - ;john
5. James Morrison - Up (ft. Jessie J)

Note that number 1 has accumulated the grand total of 5 plays. Extreme!

Equally as odd is the top 5 on last.fm (Badger_King):

1. Julie London - Cry Me A River
2. Red Army Choir - Soviet National Anthem
3. Pietro Mascagni - Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana
4. Larrikin Love - Edwould
5. Babyshambles - Killamangiro

None of which again really reflects my music taste, except for the Julie London track, which is my favourite and probably always be, because its beautiful.

Don't use iTunes these days

but the top 5 from Last.FM (from 86115 tracks played since October 2005) are:

1) Faith No More – Epic
2) Cardiacs – Is This the Life
3) British Sea Power – Atom
4) Deerhoof – Kidz Are So Small
5) Radiohead – All I Need

0
Coupey | 17 November 2011 - 12:23pm

Top 5, apparently

1 Rachel Unthank & The Winterset – Sea Song
2 Brinsley Schwarz – Surrender To The Rhythm
3 The Who – The Kids Are Alright
4 Laura Nyro – Stoney End
5 Arvo Pärt – Spiegel im Spiegel

Very skewed

My "most played" list is skewed by two factors: I had to reinstall itunes earlier this year and start from scratch; and only a small proportion of the music I have is in itunes. The first five songs are all by the Mummers, from their mini album Mink Hollow Road, which I couldn't stop playing earlier this year. 10 out of the next 12 songs are Julia Johnson's album, to which I've been similarly addicted in the last few months, with only the Pierces' You'll Be Mine breaking that hegemony. After that it's 3 from Thea Gilmore and one each from Sufjan Stevens, Beth Gibbons and The Carstairs.

Spot the one influenced by Mrs Lefthand....

1. Fire In The Canyon - Fountains of Wayne
2. Vibrate - Rufus Wainwright
3. Red Rabbits - The Shins
4. January Hymn - The Decemberists
5. Love You - The Free Design

In fact, I think Mrs L and Little Miss L are responsible for hiking up 4 of these as much as I also love them; only number 1 can I truly call my own...

For once

I got here first!

http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/most-played-ipod

Nevertheless it offers me a perfect opportunity to show off what wonderful taste I have (IMHO) by listing the top 5 on my Most Played list in iTunes:

1. Hollow Victory - Jimmy Webb & The Webb Brothers (James Webb singing beautifully)
2. Nostalgia - The Webb Brothers (Christiaan Webb singing earthily as only he does, the track is also on his forthcoming album)
3. Lucky Me - Richard Harris (guess who wrote this one)
4. Light Years - Jimmy Webb (a demo, Glen Campbell has recorded this fine number)
5. I Saw The Light - Raspberries (what on earth is this one doing here?)

My wife reckons I am a bit sad sometimes and looking at this lot she may have a point.

I think mine sums up my position in the family

So the big top 5 on the Clark family Ipod is

1. Beggin - Frankie Valli & the Four seasons
2. Enjoy Yourself - Prince Buster / Jools Holland
3. Forget You - Cee Lo Green
4. Here come the girls - Ernie K Doe (in my case Mrs C and 2 daughters)
5. A song from Pochahontas!!

The first song I could call mine is Villagers "Becoming a jackal" at number 7.

Im off to the shed to think about football & Top Gear!

0
daddyclark | 17 November 2011 - 10:15pm

My kids have infiltrated mine

The Top 5 are:

Mud - The Ivor Cutler Trio (70 plays)
Love Love Love - Avalanche City (65 plays)
Proof - I Am Kloot (54 plays)
The Ladies' Bras - Jonny Trunk & Wisbey (54 plays)
Black Winged Bird - The Cake Sale feat. Nina Persson (53 plays)

It really means that the following two replace Ivor Cutler & Jonny Trunk & Wisbey:

The Commander Thinks Aloud- The Long Winters (48 plays)
Falling - Ben Kweller (44 plays)

Top five this time around

I think I've got the same #1 as last time we did this, but the rest have changed:
1. 10 Miles to Go On a 9 Mile Road - Jim White
2. When the Stars Go Blue - Ryan Adams
3. Sail On, Sailor - The Beach Boys
4. Pretty Bird - Jenny Lewis
5. Making Plans for Nigel - Nouvelle Vague

A very American list, with the one obvious exception.

Curtis from Ohio | 17 November 2011 - 9:49pm

Very skewed....

... so it is. I recently played bass and guitar in a Sparklehorse tribute band, and had the 'horse material on constant rotation: however, allowing for that -

1. Saturday - Sparklehorse
2. Revenge - Sparklehorse / Dangermouse
3. Mushroom - Can
4. Johnny Cash - Ry Cooder
5. Rainmaker - Sparklehorse

...and for your further delectation:

0
Fitter Stoke | 17 November 2011 - 10:18pm

Rainmaker is such a tune.

Makes me want to dig out Vivadixie and give it a listen, but seeing as another thread has just made me put 5 Mogwai albums on my phone to listen to tomorrow, I'll hang on a bit!

Incidentally - a Sparklehorse tribute band?! Is there much demand? Do you do weddings? (And why isn't "Someday I Will Treat You Good" in your top 5?)

0
Bob | 17 November 2011 - 10:32pm

It was a one-off....

... a gig in support of a local mental health charity, focussing on depression. Two or three of us had previously played a few Sparklehorse toons in a covers band, and it seemed an appropriate choice, given Mark Linkous' issues.

Actually, we DID play "... treat you good", I just didn't need to play it so often on the 'pod.

Weddings and functions? If only....

2. The Avett Bros. - Pretty Girl From Chile
3. Wu-tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck
4. Roy Orbison - She's A Mystery To Me
5. Ghostpoet - Survive It

1
Burnt_Face_Jake | 17 November 2011 - 10:10pm

Survive it by Ghostpoet is a

Survive it by Ghostpoet is a cracking song - I can well understand why it's high on your list.

Here's a link for those who have not yet heard it;

cracking video too

Not very inspiring from me

Pick any 5 tracks from Let England Shake: they're my most listened to since my count was reset following a switch of computer.

0
Red Umpire | 17 November 2011 - 10:20pm

Oh, duh. I'm stoopid.

Switching computers will obviously have reset all my play counts. Silly me. There's another reason mine's skewiff. Everything got dumped from my laptop onto my Mac Mini a few months ago.

0
Bob | 17 November 2011 - 10:33pm

Mine surprised me ...

1. No One But You - Doug Paisley
2. Love's Been Good To Me - Rod McKuen
3. Stop That Girl - Vic Godard and the Subway Sect
4. Stoned Out of My Mind - The Chi-Lites
5. Cousin Norman - Marmalade

but it did all get reset about a year ago when I got a new laptop

0
Johnny Topaz | 17 November 2011 - 11:01pm

I'll play

I didn't transfer the playlists when I got a new computer in summer, so these are from the last 3 or 4 months only

1. From Your Favourite Sky - I am Kloot
2. Yesterday is Here - Tom Waits
3. Polly on the Shore - Fairport Convention
4. Saturn 5 - Inspiral Carpets
5. St Luke's Summer - Thea Gilmore

0
Gatz | 17 November 2011 - 11:47pm

From Your Favourite Sky

is top of mine too!

Along with:

Blood On My Hands - Karen Ann
(I Can't Seem to) Make You Mine - The Clientelle
The Clockwise Witness - Devotchka
You Have - Marc Almond

0
mark0510 | 18 November 2011 - 11:23pm

Albums

You can tell I tend to listen to albums and not individual tracks when you get results like this:

Slugs In The Shrubs - Les Savy Fav
Lemonworld - The National
Bloodbuzz Ohio - The National
Terrible Love - The National
Patty Lee - Les Savy Fav

1
Grimmer | 18 November 2011 - 10:51pm

And my Top Five Are

1 'Wild Flowers' Tom Petty
2 'Suzanne' Leonard Cohen
3 'Blind Willie McTell' Bob Dylan
4 'Couldn't Call It Unexpected No. 4' Elvis Costello
5 'Ain't No Reason' Brett Dennen (now I would call that unexpected - but it is a great song')
