iTunes lag
Posted by justjames1138 on 16 October 2009 - 11:39am.
Does anybody else find that having iTunes open on their computer whilst trying to carry out other tasks like surfing the web and editing documents really slows things down. I don’t know whether it’s because iTunes simply uses up to much space when it’s active or I am multi-tasking a little too much, but my laptop really grinds to a halt when I’m listing to music or podcasts. I’ve switched it off now and things are going quite smoothly.
Does anybody else have similar issues with this?
It’s a hungry memory monster!!

Do you have lots of smart playlists?
If so, prune them. They slow things down a lot because iTunes is always trying to update them.
And if you have the inappropriately-named "Genius"
Turn it off.
Genius
Ah, yes, funnily enough this sudden lag begain when I started using the Genius tool.... I'll take your advice and silence it.
Cheers!!
iTunes is a horror
The slow performance, the endless updates, the clicking a button and then having time to make a cup of tea before iTunes decides if it's going to pay any attention, the random 'iPod is connected, synching/not there at all' messages. Just a horrible thing and the very worst part of the whole iPod experience.
aye aye tunes
That all sounds rather familiar.
The iPod may have saved their bacon for a while, but I’m starting to realise why Apple were going out of business in the first place.
Their products maybe the in thing for celebrities to use, but they just don’t seem to work very well.
I’ll stick with Bill.
Does seem to perform better on a Mac
Prior to converting to an iMac I had noticed that iTunes would run slowly on my old PC.
Since coversion to the iMac, and even though my library has grown, it does seem a lot more stable.
I do from time to time have problems dragging and dropping files into different positions within a playlist though...
Aha - you might be the very man, sir.......
Currently seriously thinking of upgrading the old PC laptop with an iBook Air.
Was it relatively painless and stress free to convert the PC based iTunes and iPod to run on the Mac?
minimise for maximum
get rid of all but essentials
this means for me, no Genius, iTunesDJ, Movies, Radio, Podcasts or TV shows
I just use it for music
and with 2GB memory I can have it playing and doing all sorts of other things quite happily. I frequently have it playing in the background when I play computer games, as Tomb Raider and Theme Park World (yes I am out of date) are much more enjoyable when accompanied by a random selection. For example, this week, Tomb Raider III was very successfully accompanied by "The Crane Wife" album by the Decemberists.
Much better than the music it gives you.
And I had firefox running at the same time.
