It's not the records you put on, it's the records you don't take off

David Hepworth's picture

The Play Count on my iTunes at home says this is the tune I've played most in the last year. That's not the same as saying it's the one I've chosen to play. I think it means that when it pops up I leave it on. That's a test of a kind, isn't it? I never would have guessed that this would have been top of my chart:

Other uppers, downers and hanging-arounders near the top of my list included "Killing Him" by Amy Lavere, the Blind Boys of Alabama doing "Way Down In The Hole", "That's How I Got To Memphis" by Mount Analog and Mahler's Adagietto.
What are yours? No cheating. Just hit play count and see what it tells you.

0

I'm [clearly] not the only one with access to my iTunes

as top of the play count is 'Shine' by Take That.
'You Never Can Tell' by Chuck Berry is next.

This leads to the obvious question -

Where is the Randomizer?

0
ChaosandMorphine | 8 July 2009 - 8:36am

Both of them are perfect...

...in their own way.

Surprising

'Vatican Broadside' by Half Man Half Biscuit (probably because it's 30 seconds long)
'Black Sand' by Jenny Lewis
'Picture Book' by The Kinks (it's my two year old daughter's favourite song)
'The Shock of The Lightning' Oasis (no surprises there)

Chimney Singing... | 8 July 2009 - 8:40am

I see a pattern emerging here...

(1) John Martyn - One Day Without You

(2) John Martyn - Some People Are Crazy

(3) John Martyn - Sweet Little Mystery

(4) John Martyn - Bless The Weather

(5) Radiohead - Jigsaw Falling Into Place

I never set my iPod to 'random', so these are simply the songs I've played the most.

0
Patrick Crowther | 8 July 2009 - 8:49am

I think on reflection

you'll feel you've let yourself down with number five. Couldn't you have squeezed in "Certain Surprise"? Otherwise, fine work indeed.

0
Molesworth | 8 July 2009 - 8:49am

Nah... I love Radiohead.

I'm happy that's there.

0
Patrick Crowther | 8 July 2009 - 8:51am

Eclectic

I was dancing in a lesbian bar - Jonathan Richman
This piano has been drinking - Tom Waits
Ali Baba - John Holt
Goodnight - Easyworld

I've no idea why these four keep popping up out of about 4000 on my itunes. I thought maybe I'd accidentally 'rated' them but it seems not.

I can't skip through them now, or else I'd deny them their chance to top the chart. But i'm happy to listen to any of them anyway.

From 19/6/09

On iTunes simply highlight all the tracks on your 25 Most Played playlist, right click and select copy. Then paste into a Word document and insert spaces to make it readable.

There is an explanation, I think

This is iTunes, not my iPod.
I think this was strongly influenced by my hours listening to choices for some music at my daughter's wedding! (apart from Nick Lowe, I hope)

Nils Lofgren / Valentine
Turtles / Happy Together
Daniel Wylie / That Was The Day
Amen Corner / (If Paradise Is) Half As Nice
Love Affair / Everlasting Love
Nick Lowe / Hope For Us All

I refer the honourable member to my earlier answer

I pretty much only use iTunes as a storage system and so would get same ranking as on the 'Pod itself, and Bach's rewrite of a Marcello oboe concerto would still have a commanding lead:

http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/most-played-ipod

although Watermark has dropped out as I reloaded it in lossless form, and a bit of Finzi has taken its place.

Glad to hear you like the Mahler Adagietto, I was recently unexpectedly transfixed by last bit of the Song of the Earth while walking along

couldn't switch that off.

My most played

In McDonalds by Burial. It was unexpected, but its been top for ages, possibly because it fits into so many playlists

Bon Foxes

Well, I'm just looking at my player's 'most played' category as I don't have iTunes (I'm a Creative Zen Vision man). And the entire thing was reset early last summer, which may explain the following:

Blindsided - Bon Iver
White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes
Tiger Mountain Peasant Song - Fleet Foxes
Viva La Vida - Coldplay
Lump Sum - Bon Iver
Skinny Love - Bon Iver
I'll Haunt You - Seth Lakeman
Meadowlarks - Fleet Foxes
What's this? - Teddy Thompson
Ragged Wood - Fleet Foxes

I am such a moron

I am such a moron that the top of my 25 Most Played i-tunes list is My Buddy Seat by The Hondells. I suppose I ought to listen to more serious music but I can’t be arsed.
Anyway, My Buddy Seat is my morning kick-starter adrenalin shot.

Strangely..

My number one is Foggy Mountain Breakdown by Earl Scruggs.
Number two: Music For A Found Harmonium by Penguin Cafe Orchestra

I'm not entirely sure how. I suspect my son. Mind you, I don't use itunes much now except as a music library for my Sonos system. Which is a great bit of kit and I would encourage others to have a look at it.
