It's the new podcast - straight from the oven to your ears
Posted by David Hepworth on 3 February 2009 - 2:34pm.
In the new podcast Mark Ellen and Matt Hall report from last night's Radio Two Folk Awards, David Hepworth draws a line between Bruce Springsteen's 12-minute show at Sunday's Superbowl and the possibility of the re-birth of the package tour and we find out what led Alvin Stardust to describe the Editor as "a young reporter out of his depth" on the radio this morning.

Were you all on helium when
Were you all on helium when you recorded it?
Yes
Yes we were.
Helium?
I thought you wanted opium...
Is it just me who's hearing
Is it just me who's hearing this at twice the normal speed on this page?
Speed
Weird. It's playing OK on the computers I've tried it on.
I wondered when
the reprimand from Mr. Dust on the Today programme would surface, how you showed such withstraint is beyond me
He must have been out of his tiny mind...
Taj Mahal
Strange to hear Taj mentioned. Having not seen or heard him for years, last night my wife and I caught the start of the film 6 Days and 7 Nights and Taj Mahal and his band were playing in the background in an early scene. He had a fantastic Hawaian shirt on. I've no idea if he appeared again later as we went to bed.
Most cat litter BTW is Fuller's Earth rather than grit.
We use the clumping litter..
...which, on contact with liquid, slurps it up and forms a semi-solid lump.
Just tried some on the snow outside and it's not a good thing.
Shame Matt Hall's leaving...
he did a great job setting the controls at the heart of the fun.
"It's All Over Now"?
Matt Hall: The Mick Taylor of the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Podcast in the World?
In the words of the immortal Derek Smalls
"They're two distinct types of visionaries, it's like fire and ice, basically. I feel my role ... is to be somewhere in the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water."
I assume (or, rather, hope)
that the Guardian 'embargo' does not stretch to posting on these here pages?
Don't worry Paul
Badly judged late night rants under the influence of the larger half of a bottle of red wine will continue for the foreseeable.
And thanks for everyone's kind words. What, oh, it's nothing. Just got something in my eye, that's all...
Best of luck, Matt
Going to miss you, no question.
Presumably Mark is going to do the technical stuff now.
Yeah
What he said.
All the best
From me too
them there podcasts got me through a lorra long journeys last year - you'll be missed.
Goodbye Matt...
... the classic PodCast line-up is no more.
Can Hepworth & Ellen save it?
In 20 years time...
...they'll get back together to do a reunion podcast live from the O2
Don't worry
we're getting Ron Wood in.
Good luck Matt
I've enjoyed your progress from the barely audible comment in the background of the early Podcasts to fully fledged regular.
The sudden news of your departure at the very end of the podcast was a bit unexpected but I hope you will be able to appear as a guest on future editions.
All the best!
Just talking of Buddy Holly...
... I have to say that I'm more in Mr. Stardust's camp than Mr. Ellen's (a sentence I never thought I'd type), but having been caning a Holly "Best Of" CD this week, I've been struck by the sheer brevity of his work - 20 tracks on this CD, none over 3 minutes, most below 2'10", total running time 44 minutes - amazing. When exactly did pop lose the "short sharp shock" philosophy?
Cliff Richard did practice driving a bus for Summer Holiday
In the BBC Movie Connections programme a couple of weeks ago about Summer Holiday, Sir Cliff said that he did go to a London Transport depot to try out driving a bus in preparation for the film. It was to make his driving look convincing in the film - although the scenes were done in the studio.
Surely this puts him up with De Niro and Day-Lewis in commitment to the craft.
Not only that
He's believed to have actually gone on holiday for several weeks to get into character.
A trouper.
Bachelor Boy...
...and he's remained a Bachelor Boy, as he said he would in the film. Now's there's commitment to his art.
Good show.
Amis
Delighted to have my Amis posting quoted-but wouldn't want anyone to think that "the poet laureate of alcoholism" was my coinage.
I was quoting Leonard Pierce in an excellent essay at http://thehighhat.com/Marginalia/007/drinking_pierce.html
though Google suggests the title may also have been contested by Charles Bukowski, at the very least.
Cheers ...
Podcast
Nick Mason's 'Inside Out' book had a large holiday snap of the band, associates, wives, kids etc all on holiday. If I remember correctly, Richard Wright was holding Naomi.
That photo occasionally turns up
in trivia quizzes - Who is the movie star in this photo? Ms Watts is about two years old in the shot.
Lost operas
I agreed totally with the comments about the superficial, knockabout plots of most operas. Which got me thinking: how come Brian Rix never directed, or wrote librettos for, any operas? He'd be a natural!
Excerpts from a adult opera
For those who *do* like opera, and who fancy a Saturday evening change from Classic FM, check out the live relays from the Met on Radio 3 (or even the HD broadcasts to cinemas-see http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/bfi_imax/opera_programme/introduction
though I think I'll be inside this Saturday for Lucia di Lammermoor).
