Its Ginger Baker and Adrian Gurvitz and they've got an army? First concerts

smaynard's picture

Watford Town Hall 1975 ish - my first ever gig. Even write a review for the school magazine that my mum still cherishes to this day. I had the poster on my wall for about a year having "liberated" it from a wall near the venue on the way home.

I dont think Watford Town Hall was used again as a concert venue.

Perhaps the "army adopted a scorched earth policy?

Gurvitz was gonna write a classic...

...and he even had an idea about which part of his house he was going to write it in.

But this isn't it (Baker-Gurvitz Army 1975; warning: contains drum solo):

Arguably more enjoyable is this surreal glimpse from the cutting room floor of an unaired 90s cookery show featuring Ginger Baker, in which he memorably explains 'I can't take any more, I'm going...' before deciding to stay and advise the woman in the maid outfit what the Swedish for halibut is. Strangely, she doesn't seem to care.

And as for Watford Town Hall - wasn't it used for all the orchestral soundtrack recordings for the Lord Of The Rings films?

theres nothing quite so

theres nothing quite so poignant as an ageing (lets face it, quite ugly) ex-rock star used to getting beautiful young woman fancying him based on his fame, meeting a young woman who's never heard of him and seeing that awkward teenage boy stance and bewildered look.

My favourite ginger baker story is the one from his interview in this very magazine where he gets a letter from, I think, his record company addressed to: Miss Ginger Baker.

great drummer though

The Gurvitz Brothers

Adrian and Paul, had previously troubled the charts in 1969 with their band Gun and the top 10 single Race with The Devil.

Back then they were using the name Curtis and reverted to their family name of Gurvitz in the early 70s.

Wow!

Who knew The Gun were such a closely guarded musical commodity?

Loved that single

That and 'Sabre Dance' by Dave Edmunds. Precursors of heavy metal, anyone?
