It's the first Randomizer of the winter
Posted by David Hepworth on 27 October 2009 - 8:19am.
Now that the clocks have gone back and wee Scottish urchins can find their way to school in the daylight it's time to mark the changing of the seasons with the first Randomizer of the winter. Usual rules. The first five tunes that come up on shuffle or random. No editing, no second goes, no apologies, no excuses. Do it now.
As is traditional, I shall go first:
1. Cher: Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves
2. Bruce Springsteen: Rave On (Live at the Roxy)
3. Richard Hawley: Coles Corner
4. Royksopp: Tricky Tricky
5. Chico Buarque: Minha Historia
- More from David Hepworth.

loads of jazz on my iPhone
When I got my iPhone, I set up a playlist of all the jazz in iTunes, and put that on first. I then added another playlist of "manual adds" so I can keep up with other newer things, and a third playlist of "Set Texts", albums that I always like to have around or at least will expect to be able to listen to when I'm not at home.
But most of what is on it is jazz, so this wasn't a big surprise.
Now, where did I put my cigarillos ....

Play some new
I'm amazed that so many people seem to have room for so much old stuff on their ipod. I only have a 16G nano so there's not room for much over 5 years old and certainly nothing more than 10 years old.
Eyes Like Tar - Pete & The Pirates
Secret Yoga - Luke Haines
Zak & Sara - Ben Folds (OK I know it's old but I only got it a month ago!)
Punk Is Dead - Jeffrey Lewis
Missing You - Todd Snider
Well, I'm working on a 1Gb Shuffle so...
...the odds of getting something I actually want to hear is quite high. Here's the result of flicking that shuffle switch across...
1. Vivi Davvero - Giorgia (sort of the Italian Madonna, believe it or not)
2. Bruxelles - Jacques Brel (what are the odds of two foreign language tracks in a row, eh?)
3. Backwards down the number line - Phish (off their new album)
4. The Ruminant Band - Fruit Bats (again, off their new album)
5. Titties and Beer - Frank Zappa (from Live In New York)

2) I've Got A Feeling - The Beatles (remastered)
3) Sometimes I Just Have To Say Your Name - Del Amitri
4) Slap & Tickle - Squeeze
5) Glorious Fool - John Martyn
Great to hear the HJH on my phone at last - but only "Let It Be" and "Abbey Road" so far. Fingers crossed Santa can find a mono boxed set (and given the swiftly-whisked-away-and-hidden parcel which arrived from Amazon for Mr Mandy this week, I think I might be in luck).
Here goes...
....and shuffle...
1. Road To Somewhere - Goldfrapp
2. To Miss Someone - Maria McKee
3. She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
4. A Little Time - Beautiful South
5. Searching For Mr Night - Young Marble Giants
Interesting. I didn't know I had the Beautiful South or Thomas Dolby on there. I'm not sure if that's a good sign or a bad sign, that I don't know what music I have digitally.

Love Train - The O'Jays from The Return of the Super 70's (Visibly blanches at the idiocies of youth)

H Gang - Donald Fagen from a Word CD of May 2006 (Nice track and good to have it pop up)
We're All Alone - Boz Scaggs from Silk Degrees (An odd mix of new old material but it still stands up for me)
Oooh la la
Douze Belles dans la Peau - Michele Arnaud
Man In The Fog - Flying Burrito Brothers
Can't Feel My Soul - Teenage Fanclub
Revolution Blues - Neil Young
Chance - The Teardrop Explodes
Achingly cool selection!
Am I the only sad git...
...who looks at the selections to see which ones I could have come up with. I don't think I've ever got the perfect 5 and 4 is pretty rare. Isn't music a wonderful thing?

2) Where is the Love - Cat Power
3) Beautiful Girl - Robyn Hithcock
4) Sao Paulo - Morcheeba
5) Firecracker - Ryan Adams
I must say, in all honesty, that I couldn't hum any of them.
"I must say, in all honesty, that I couldn't hum any of them."
That's the irony, I suppose. We should all post the play count for each track selected.
My five
Ordinary Pain- Stevie Wonder
Stay Positive- The Streets
The Christmas song - Vince Guaraldi
Oh Good Grief! - Vince Guaraldi
Double Barrel- Dave and Ansel Collins
Out of 15000 things on the ipod it throws up two Vince Guaraldi pieces in a row. Still, you can never have too much Charlie Brown music in your daily life.
Five more
Stones - Waiting on a Friend
Damned - Melody Lee
Counting Crows - Mr Jones
Thin Lizzy - Boys are Back In Town
Van Halen - Jump
Seems pretty representative I 'spose
iTunes help
Tried to add my selection to the above.
Opened up iTunes.
Clicked Shuffle icon.
Clicked Play. Nothing happened.
Double-clicked on an individual track. Nothing happened, apart from message asking if I want to locate the original file. If I navigate to the file (which is in the same place as it was the last time iTunes played it) it will play; however, I obviously don't want to go through this process every time.
Checked my iTunes Preferences. Still pointing to the external drive where they are stored. No recent changes.
Any suggestions?
maybe it's feeling cuckolded, due to my recent love for Spotify, little realising that this experience is likely to drive me further into the arms of the Scandinavian upstart...
There's some kind of
add library thing in preferences (sorry to be vague - I am at work and don't have itunes on the laptop). I think it just needs to reconnect with the files and you can do it in one go. Will look tonight when I get home from the joys of work (assuming you haven't solved it by then).
External Drive
I've seen this when the remote drive has been disconnected and re-connected
Under file
select add folder to library. Then select the root of your music collection on the external drive. That should do it. Hope it works.

4. Shortstuff - A Rustling - more dubstep, this one fast and clattery with a Samba feel
5. Hercules & Love Affair - You Belong - gorgeous retro-house in the style of Inner City
Hmmm
1. Love Battery - Buzzcocks

1. James - Destiny Calling
2. The Proclaimers - The Doodle Song
3. Robbie Williams - Strong
4. Oasis - Some Might Say
5. Pet Shop Boys - Go West
This is brilliant. On train journeys I do a random shuffle (as above) until I find the first track that i *really* fancy listening to that day, then do a Genius. I would have "Geniused" Destiny Calling today - mildly melancholy pop with a capacity to cheer up - next track would have been Dignity by Deacon Blue.
no randomizing for 8 days
