It's Building Thursday
Posted by TedLoaf on 13 October 2011 - 8:27am.
Songs that build and build to a beautifully engorged vessel of sound. Have we done anything like it before?
If not here's mine, show me yours.

It's Johnny!
I like Mercury Rev a lot and thanks for the reminder of that song.
I couldn't help feeling that it was sung by Johnny Robinson off the X Factor - I knew he reminded me of someone!
(Sorry to bring your post down to a puerile level).
Mercury Rev: Improving the image of construction.
Mercury Rev have always been good at the whole "building" thing, often starting a song with a gentle solo, ending it in mad cacophony but somehow making complete sense on the crazy journey there.
This is my favourite example of theirs - "Meth Of A Rockette's Kick":
If it built any more it would have to change its name to Bob
Underworld, Luetin
Good call.
I'm going to go with 'Snookered' by Dan Deacon. Talk about building. It's one of the most euphoric sounds I know, this song.
This fits the bill, methinks
Funeral for a friend
I'd never really noticed before, not owning the album...
but the opening to that is prog in excelsis!
truly prog-tastic!
it's an A.R.P. Synthesizer, played by David Hentschel who went on to produce Genesis
Still their finest moment for me.
elbow - 'Newborn'
São Paulo by Guillemots
After a pretty tremendous false climax 4 mins in, it builds to a complete orchestral wig out at the end:
It's great live
Anyone heard this one?
It is quite good I think:
but maybe that's just me
Jane's Addiction
Three Days
Erotic Jesus!
One last one
by the time the vocal comes in I am waving-my-hands-in-the air like a loon mode:
great little coda too
BigJimBob...
Did you post a recommendation for this album a while ago? If so... THANK YOU! I already owned Pause/Paws but hadn't heard this till you posted. It still gets a lot of plays chez me (my hands spend a lot of time in the air too). Fantastic piece of work - both you and Mr Hebden.
Steve
Yes I did. Glad you like it. On the quite Keiran is a bit of a genius isn't he?
Clever, clever man and while we're 'avin it...cop some of this..
Bedrock, For What You Dream Of (full on Renaissance mix)
Gotta be
Genesis - The Musical Box
Sigur Ros
Ara Batur
(Live at Abbey Road)
Quiet to the point of death for first 6 and a half minutes then just builds and builds to orchestral and choir crescendo of epic proportions. Quite, quite lovely.
Orbital
The Girl With The Sun In Her Head
It was this track that made me realise Orbital were more than just a dance act.
That
is one of my favourite tracks ever. If that doesn't get you off you need drugs.
It is wonderful
isn't it? It's so joyous and warm. You'd regularly get the joy in electronic dance music but genuine warmth and feeling was a rare commodity until Orbital came along.
Also one of my absolute faves
And I was going to post it myself!!! Bugger
Beautifully sad too and gloriously arranged.
I'm really rather liking this thread!
.
The Staunton Lick
(Love these guys)
Yes!
Also, another great builder by them is Ramblin' Man.
(Me too)
This just keeps on getting better until it's time to say goodbye
What happened to them?
last album was a while ago now. I love Make Things Right off that one - Gallagher and Lyle, eh?
Extended hiatus since '08
I thought the last album '64-'95 was a big disappointment and lacked the vitality of musical ideas from their previous albums and EPs.
It was a bit hit and miss
but had some highs: the aforementioned Make things Right - which, contrary to my original post, isn't the one with the G and L sample that would of course be Stay with You duh...which is also good, as is Only Time. But I agree that some tracks like Slow Train (co-writing credits to the BBC's current economics editor's dad, trivia fans) are a bit duff.
This wasn't on the album
but came out around the same time (I think) and is a little belter. No prizes for getting the sample...
Lemon Jelly, The Fruity Track
Gotan Project
Triptico
Never want this track to end as soon as it starts.
Time for a classic
I humbly offer two.
First of all lets be obvious. I Am The Resurrection by The Stone Roses
Second of all, something a bit more obscure. I Am John by Loney, Dear
I'm upping you
for the choice of I Am John - just fab! Sprock on.
Oh I love a good dynamic build up I do!
Also have I Know My Love by James Yorkson. Great tune this, builds up beautifully
Global Communication
Songs that build are wonderful to drive to. Here's another. This from the album with no song titles (just numbers).
Yes..again!
Great album. And as with Lemon Jelly here's another GC track - Delta Phase from Pentamerous Metamorphosis - that also builds wonderfully
Fantastic
may I congratulate you on your very fine taste.
Ditto
(and I don't mean Beth)
State of the Union
How about this?
Climaxes halfway through rather than at the end, but still. Shades of this guy methinks:
Hey, that's me on the cover
of All Is Dream - well, it looks like me a bit.
Anyway, I love these types of song (track? whatever). There are some here that I don't know so will have to click on a few links.
How about Let It Grow off 461 Ocean Bvd & HJH's I Want You (She's So Heavy)- can't add any links, I'm afraid, but I'm sure you know the tunes.
Favorite band, one of the best videos too
Builds and builds
Dan Arborise
To The Sea
A simple build around an acoustic guitar but no less effective for it.
Good shout,
pity the rest of the album couldn't match it, it would have been immense.
A little bit of Gospel
I first heard this on Jarvis Cocker's 6 music show. Brian Eno was talking about his love of Gospel and then played this wonderful record. It certainly builds to a glorious noise. No religious belief needed
Spiritualized - Cop Shoot Cop
Radiohead's National Anthem
XTC - River of Orchids
The mighty Nile...
Buchanan's 'neon signs, cigarettes...' stream of consciousness* building to 'I'm tired of crying on the stairs. The downtown lights...'
Epic, stirring stuff.
*talking of which, I would have thought just about any Van Morrison track would fit the 'building' bill...
EDIT: I should point out that the video fades out before the bit I refer to above, frustratingly.
Roy's the boy
Roy Orbison was the original master at 'this sort of thing' e.g. 'It's Over' and the mighty Zep's 'Stairway to Heaven' is another classic which fits this particular bill.
It's Over.
Just how good is that? Wonderful stuff.
indie guitar heroes
Butler:
(Suede - The Asphalt World)
Marr:
(The Smiths - Death Of A Disco Dancer)
...
...
Radiohead 'There There'
unlike the fake plastic trees - it grows (though that song also works). Cracking video too - fairy tale strangeness.
More Spiritualized...
Builds up to that awesome crescendo "Feel so good.. feel so fine... leaves me fucked up inside..."
Rain, sea, surf, sand, clouds and sky...
The Mighty Roots
With John Legend. This one seriously takes off after about 6:30...
Questlove drumming like a mofo as well.
